The mural still exists (or did last November, at least). Just go into the Kodak photo thingy, and keep walking back and back and back. It was partially blocked, but you could see part of the mural.
But where is the model?
In the lobby of the Disneyland Opera House, which is basically the same thing as the Magic Kingdom Expo Center and in the same location on the town square, there is a big model of Disneyland as it looked on opening day in 1955. It's roughly 15 feet by 15 feet large. It always has a crowd of people around it pointing out things that are still there, or areas that have changed dramatically. And there's always older folks remembering the TWA rocket or the old Mine Train or something. It's a fun thing to look at.
WDW needs to install this sort of thing, at the very least put in a model of the Magic Kingdom circa 1971 back in the Expo Center. It helps people reconnect with their past visits and is simply just cool to look at. At the very least having a model of the opening day park would quiet down people who might complain if a ride is closed for rehab. Nothing like seeing how few attractions and buildings existed on opening day to quiet a complainer!
