El Rio rehab details from Animator

I'm actually kind of bummed about the changes...I really loved the cheesy 70's movies. I know they need to update rides (blah, blah) but I will still miss it.

I love the ride 'as is'. My family always hits this ride two and thee times while at Epcot. It is relaxing, fun, and we love the music. I am sad that it will be closed when we are there in March, but hopefully the change bring new life and a new following to a great ride.

Maybe it'll end up being Jose and Panchito chasing Donald through real video of Mexico ... animation and live video, kind of like the Roger Rabbit movie. That way they're showcasing Mexico in an fun (and updated) way.

:)

That would sure be nice, but I doubt Disney would go to that much trouble for it.

I'm not sure about the "may-hee-ko" comment. I'm not a great Spanish student, but have no idea what this would translate to. Anyone know what sbkline is talking about? What is the correct spelling? No offense sbkline, I just am trying to find the actual saying and translation because I'm a Disney nerd who happens to be in my last year (thank God) of Spanish.

I AM DOING SOME SERIOUS LAUGHING ON THIS ONE!

This whole thing seems like buying your wife a vacuum for her birthday.

Sorry, I'm trying to keep an open mind. But the evidence keeps looking worse and worse to me, like smelling a Tiki.

I am sorry to hear the details of this rehab. I thoroughly enjoy mocking the current attraction for its cheesiness and general lack of entertainment value. But now with this upgrade, we're taking the chance the attraction may bounce up to merely passable, which takes all the fun out of mocking it. Oh well, there's always hope it may become legitimately amusing, which would be great because it would actually be fun to ride it.

Not a darn thing wrong with the marketplace scene. So it has some pushy vendors. Big deal. Get a grip.

Wait... what?

I said I hope they DON'T get rid of it...

Heh.

:lookaroun

I've never been a Disney purist, but I hope they tread lightly with this project... because I can smell them taking things way too far...

Long live El Rio del Tiempo!

I agree with this sentiment Generation X. We even made fun of this attraction 1986-1988 when I was in high school (I throw this in because I've seen people argue that this was probably cool in the 80's, when just the opposite was true). But.....a lot of people really seem to like it. I hope the changes make it a better attraction for everyone (i.e. make it fun for those of us who don't like it now and keep it fun for those who do).

On a side note - has anyone actually seen the 3 Caballeros? I read a little synsopis on the internet movie data base (imdb.com) and it sounds a little odd. Apparently it was made during WWII in order to improve US relations with various South American countries.

I apparently misunderstood your post, so please accept my apologies. I thought you were being sarcastic and, like several other posters I have seen here, referring to the supposed (and IMO, nonexistent) racism/stereotyping in the marketplace scene.

How people can condemn that as being "racist" is beyond me, but then again, I see the "R" word and the "S" word ("stereotyping"), being thrown around way too loosely these days.

I have seen 3 Caballeros. It's exactly what people keep saying wont happen to the attraction - live action and animation. It's not a blatant propaganda movie. It's actually very enjoyable.

Very classic Disney.

I have to give a friend a lift right now, but later i'll see if i can dig up the screen caps I made from the DVD when i first heard about this attraction changeover months ago.

Hi everyone:wave: , I have been reading the forums a long time now and finally registered so I could join in. Dont know what took me so long.

Anyway, this Three Cabellero overlay for El Rio I think is a great idea, however the storyline concerns me. Aren't they just copying the new Nemo ride at the Seas?

Apparently the storyline is the other two characters from the three caballeros are looking for Donald, sounds just like the Nemo ride storyline to me which seems like a fast short cut to not spend time or money on something that could be worthwhile.

I just hope the emphasis is still on Mexico and these characters presenting Mexico, and not just "where is donald oh donald where are you".

Will be interesting to see how this comes out exactly. It did need updating but I too loved the retro feel to it.

I was thinking about this today...

So we'll have Donald Duck, Jose Carioca, and Panchito Pistoles hosting the attraction now.

Only one of these characters is Mexican.

So, in essence... we're going to have an American, a Mexican, and a Brazilian hosting the Mexican pavillion's flagship attraction.

Am I the only one who sees this being awkward in any way?

I really shouldn't judge it until I ride it in April, but I do tend to agree. It looks to me like this ride ain't gonna be about Mexico anymore, but is instead gonna be another pathetic attempt to dumb down the rides at EPCOT just to cater to the kiddies like they did with The Living Seas. I thought the whole point of the rides and attractions in World Showcase was to give a sampling of the country. Apparently not anymore.

But again...I haven't been on it yet, so maybe I should give Disney the benefit of the doubt and show more faith in them that they can do this refurb and still keep the ride about Mexico and not Donald and friends.

You do have a good point there. Let's hope its something like "While we're looking for Donald, let's tour around Mexico and see all of the sights!" rather than "Oh Donald! Where are you? OMFG!!!11!1 Donald is getting attacked by a Dragon! Quickly, I shall eat a chilli dog and burg to scare away the beast! *burps and boat riders smell chilli dog* Ah, Donald is safe! *kids voices in the background say 'wow, this is fun!' 'donald is so cool!' Then a buch of video screen rather than AA 3 Caballeros singing an unattractive song and then the ride opens into the new gift shop."

Okay, maybe I got a little carried away. I do kinda wish they could do something cooler. Something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECQmqD_OUF8 ( warning, parental discression advised. Some violent footage ).

Personally, I think that the Caballeros are going to take the time to teach us about Mexico while searching for Donald at the same time.

The animator should've said something like that.

Anyhow, I'm also one of the people that's looking forward to seeing the changes. For one thing, it'll bring something new and fresh to Epcot's aging Mexico pavilion and kinda bring the 3 Caballeros back from obscurity.

Well, I uploaded all these 3 Cabs screen grabs, so I might as well post them...

Way back when this was just a rumored change to Mexico, I rented the 3 Caballeros and decided to grab some of what I felt were the best visuals.

Here we go..

cap001.jpg

Live action, Donald, Jose, a pretty woman, and people carrying stuff on their head while walking in place pretending to move forward while perspective scenery behind them move. Awesome!

Okay, moving on.. This is the box that Panchito comes out of.. He's a gift.

cap002.jpg

Or did he give a gift? I don't remember.. but this box obviously say Mexico. So see.. this movie has everything to do with Mexico.

Next up..

cap008.jpg

Flying over May-hee-koh! On a magic serape! How fabulous is that?

cap003.jpg

Panchito thinks it rocks!

Time to dive bomb some bathing beauties on the beach! Whoo, that's what Mexico is all about..

cap009.jpg

Or we could be in some other South American Country, but it doesn't matter. Panchito is happy.

cap004.jpg

And apparently Donald and Jose are happy too.

cap010.jpg

It's just too cute, I miss the days when animated birds could mistake another for beautiful bathing women when blind folded and it was considered ok for children.

cap011.jpg

And well, at some point it started to rain.. the deluge.

cap005.jpg

Probably around the time they told the really sad story of the little children telling what I think was some sort of Christmas story. They look like "small world" children.

Which is probably why the next image I have is of the 3 Cabs flying away to a sunnier spot as fast as they can on their magic Serape. C'mon, say it, Sur-rahp-peh!

cap012.jpg

About the movie in general..

Donald spent a lot of it in "love."

cap013.jpg

With her... The woman with the flower on her head.

cap018.jpg

And the moon..

cap014.jpg

And the hat dance lady.. (she rocked!)

cap019.jpg

And the most ultimate woman in the film - the giant floating head in the stars!

cap015.jpg

If i recall properly, she's Carmen Miranda's sister. Donald can't help but love her.

cap016.jpg

So many women, like so many flowers..

But, Panchito coaxes us to move on..

cap020.jpg

While Jose gets Donald moving. Okay, so maybe their relationship isn't so innocent.

cap021.jpg

But, all well that ends well, unless you're Donald.

cap022.jpg

But, just like El Rio del Tiempo - it ends with fireworks!
