And the difference can be astounding with some movies. Back in the old days there was this technology called ?laserdisc?. On laserdisc, most movies were played back widescreen and there was an example with the movie ?Dances with Wolves? where they compared a scene in widescreen on laserdisc and one formatted to fit your screen (the way it was released on video) and in the scene where there are three characters talking, one is completely not visible on the full (formatted for TV) screen version because they were completely cut out.

The Die Hard DVD has this comparison, and it's narrated so you get to understand it even better from a cinematographer point of view.

Did the BTTF DVD come out so much earlier in Brazil than here? :veryconfu

I don't know why, but yeah, it came out in the end of September. Usually we have to wait A LOT to get something that has alread being released in the US, but there are a few exceptions. We got BTTF and Spider-Man (DVDs) before you guys, but Scooby-Doo was only released in theaters in October, and Reign of Fire just started yesterday.

By the way, we're Region 4.

And the BTTF box is amazing. Great menu screens, great box design, the commentary features are great, deleted scenes, making-ofs, blooper reels... It was well worth all the wait, and I hope the future (let's hope it doesn't take SO long) Indy Trilogy has the same benefits...

Oh, it sounds amazing!!!

I can't wait til BTTF is here!!! :sohappy:

I do have a really stupid question though, so ya'll please don't laugh....I already know it's dumb -

What is this "region" thing of which you speak?

I know that here is region 1 (the guy at the store told me that  ), but what IS the whole region thing about?

Actually.... I dont know much about how and why the region thing was put together...and what the main purpose is... Mr P and NowInc know a lot more about that than I do :)

Here is the ugly art work we get on the Box set BTW:

Thanks for responding DMC-12 !

I do appreciate it :)

I have another question, and I swear I'm not trying to start a fuss, but what does the artwork on the box really matter?

I just want the DVD's ! :D

I got a question...I rented E.T. yesterday and watched it twice. Theres an option on the bonus features that you can watch the 2002 world premiere with John William's orchestra playing the music and during the movie you can hear cheering and laughing on some parts like your really at the premiere. Well when I played the movie from the first menu, I still heard clapping and cheering. Is there an option to watch the movie without hearing these things....dont get me wrong its a neat feature and I like it but I would also like to watch the film w/ silence.

Yeah, like the t-shirt "Roads? Where we're going, we don't NEED roads." It looks realy cool! I love that t-shirt!

As far as I know (and I COULD be wrong), the region thing was created to avoid selling stuff where they don't exist. For example, we got BTTF before you guys, so if it was VHS you could come and get it here, way cheaper because of the dollar rates, and you'd have pretty much the same product, only with the choice of Portuguese subtitles and a better artwork. Or the other way around, you have Walt Disney Treauseres and we don't. Of course, the region thing is electronic, so there are ways to make your player "region-free". Sometimes the company itself will tell you if you call their costumer service, but you can also find that out on the Net. That's why I buy American DVDs that I know will never get down here.
