That's funny. I was wandering around Target the yesterday and they had an Ad running for the trilogy set on all the TV's in the electronics section. If I remember correctly, it was Dec. 3rd and it looks like it's going to have a lot of extra stuff with it.. How's that for coincidence?

Yep, that's what they say for pre-order everywhere online but I guess Target seems to think they are going to be selling them on the third... That or I just totally botched it up (most likely):hammer:

Whats the difference?

Whats the difference between widescreen and a full screen? I want E.T. for christmas on DVD but I dont know which one to get. I wish they had wide and full screen on one DVD, oh well. I play my dvds on a PS2, dont have a dvd player yet. And can you tell which one you would prefer?

Well, it is a preference I think, I always want Widescreen so I feel like I get the full movie I paid for, however, some people just seem to not be able to stand the picture not filling the screen, I never notice it personally, especially with a good movie, and a nice size tv. BTW Full screen does cut out sides of the movie in order to zoom in and fit to your screen.

And the difference can be astounding with some movies. Back in the old days there was this technology called “laserdisc”. On laserdisc, most movies were played back widescreen and there was an example with the movie “Dances with Wolves” where they compared a scene in widescreen on laserdisc and one formatted to fit your screen (the way it was released on video) and in the scene where there are three characters talking, one is completely not visible on the full (formatted for TV) screen version because they were completely cut out.

In more modern movies, they try to do a cheesy pan-and-scan in post production for when they need to show an entire shot in full screen where they move across the film to make it look like the camera moved from left to right or right to left to show a full scene or to show a conversation between characters that won’t all fit on screen but it is rather easy for the untrained eye to notice something not quite right with the picture when it does that - there is a sort of jumpiness to the whole thing that drives me crazy when I see it. They do this with most movies that you see on the movie channels.

There are exceptions to this kind of thing though and “A Bug’s Life” is probably the most notable. Since all of the visual elements of the movie were computer rendered, they in essence, still had all the original actors and sets when it came time to put the movie on DVD so they went back and remade a new version where in some cases, they moved characters closer together to fit them in a frame and in other cases, they redid the scene adding legs to characters and adding space above them to fit the frame to a TV screen without chopping off the sides. In essence, it is one of the first movies converted to full screen that actually added elements to the movie instead of taking them away.

A lot of people don’t like the widescreen because they think they are being cheated out of screen space. When they realize how dramatically it can alter a move most become a little more comfortable with it. Like Spider-man, I get all of mine on widescreen because I want to see the ENTIRE movie the way the director and cinematographer put it together – not a copy of the movie that has gone through the hands of some flunky in an editing room months to years later so that the studio can make an extra buck by selling it for home viewing, you know? :)
