DVC Use Year Question

First of all, sorry if this is posted to the wrong forum, but I thought it general WDW discussion.

After last month's DVC tour at Saratoga Springs, we have decided to become members. We are planning our next 2 trips and are trying to figure out when our use year will start and when we'll get out points. We thought that it would be at the closing date, but friends from our town joined in Feb. 2006 and their use year was 'back dated' to Dec. 2005. We are becoming members in Dec. 2007 and have no idea when our first points will be allotted. Anyone know how this works?

Thanks.

P.S.-Oooops...I guess this should be in 'Trip Planning/Resorts' or the 'DVC thread'...I don't know how to move it. :-(

First of all, congratulations and WELCOME HOME! :sohappy:

Secondly, your use (anniversary) date should have been clearly mentioned by your DVC agent, and in your contract. You should have been given these info before you even signed up. Furthermore, if you have the sign-up ID, you should register online at the DVC website, and all of these info (such as use year, amount of points you have left, when you should start banking, etc) will be available to you specific to your DVC membership.

The anniversary date need not be the date of your closing. We certainly didn't get that because we signed up in Sept, and we were given april 30 as our anniversary date, which meant that we got a new set of points just 7 months after we signed up.

So check your agreement carefully. These info should be listed there.

Thanks for that quick reply and the 'Welcome Home'.

We didn't get that info yet because we are only joining when we return in December. (As Canadians, we have to be in the state of Florida to join. The only exception to that is people who live in Ontario, which has different rules). I'm hoping that we get a second set of points 7-8 months after joining. Our friends got another set 9 months after joining and that's why I started this thread. I've heard 1 year later, 7 months, 9 months, etc. I'm trying to figure out how they set the anniversary date.

Thanks again.

Sometimes it depends on promotions that they are running at the time of purchase. We bought points in 2005 while on one of the West Coast cruises. As part of a special that they were running, even though we signed in August, our use year was set to February, so we got more points 6 months later.

Oh, then you will be given that specific info when you sign up. In fact, your DVC rep will tell you right away (if not, ask) when your Anniversary date will be. Most likely, it will not be 12 months after you sign up.

It has nothing to do with when you sign the contract. We signed in March of 1995 and our use year begins in September.

I'm not sure how they figured it out.

Thanks for the info. I phoned my DVC rep last night, and she said that people who recently became members were give retroactive membership to Dec. 2006. They already have a set of points and will get another in Dec. of this year. She actually wasn't sure how the use year anniversary date is determined either, but it is typically set at a few months before you join.

Seems like the use year begins within a few months after you buy in. I know my wife and I bought in April of 2005, but our use year begins in September. Anyone else willing to say when they bought versus when their use year began?

i joined in feb at the animal kingdom.it was purchased in my daughters name because they were only offering it to present dvc members she was ,i wasn't.it was just too good a deal to pass .i'm in the process of transfering them to my name as we speak.then my daughter used her points to let my wife and i stay in the wilderness villas.she so liked it we bought another 200 points in the animal kingdom.it made sense because i got the full 50 years.so my rep made all 400 points febuary as my use yr month.the bad thing is i was told i can't use them until sept when the animal kingdon vacation club opens.did i mention that my daughter also works at disney so i got the second 200 points at a great price also[/quote

Welcome to the boards!

It sounds like you are enjoying the DVC. We can't wait to join at AKL later this year.

We bought in February, but they were having a special for use years in September. You got points from that September so you already had points before you even started. We are having a great time using extra points!

Just got back from Disney Friday, and went to the DVC session the day before. We thought about it a couple of days and pulled the trigger last night with James (excellent person) at Disney for 160 pts in SSR. Our "use year" date is DEC. 06 and was backdated. So we have 160 now and also get another 160 in 8 months (DEC 07) and don't plan on going back until next April so we will have 320 to play with. It was so funny when we left last Friday. Had flights back to Boston at 1:30pm, they asked for volunteers to take the 4:30 flight confirmed and let others go. So we did that, as we would also get back after rush hour traffic which we were not looking forward to. We went and ate lunch at the airport resturant, came back got on the next flight out (still 4 together in a row too) and received 4 vouchers for round trip flights anywhere in the US that AirTran flies good for up to 1 year, and missed out on rush hour traffic to boot lol. I told my wife that was a sign we need to join, yesterday she told me right before we called to join that she really believed it was a sign lol.
