I completely 100% agree with that statement. I've never driven in San Diego or that area but I have done the Las Angles metro area and I would agree that traffic is worse there then anywhere else in the country. So maybe that area of California could use a ban on cell phones while driving, but I don't think it would work. In Orlando I don't find it to be as much of a problem except in some of the tourist area's.

Thank you!!
Yes, L.A. has very bad traffic no matter the time of day or the day of the week. If our destination is 10 minutes away, we expect to arrive in 30 minutes

So traffic has gotten better from when I was out there last time I guess.

Can we add smoking and eating to the list while we're at it? I've nearly been hit by people doing those as well, or even a combination of the 3!!

I've seen peeps reading a newspaper/book...too...

I was just shocked...just when you think you've seen it all...

Oh and Barnum...I've seen women do their make up on the highway too (they were veterans at it)!!

One time, when my mom was driving me back from college, we were stuck behind this car that was going REALLY slow. My mom sped up to pass them--and it was a woman going about 40 on the freeway reading a magazine. Well, while we were discussing the stupidity of such an action, my mom didn't realize that she hadn't slowed down all the way from passing the car, and was promptly pulled over for speeding.

I agree that in theory talking on a cell phone shouldn't be any more distracting than talking to someone else in a car. However, it's been my personal experience that that is not the way that it works out. I can't tell you how many people I see every day that are driving very poorly while talking on cell phones. Especially here in SoCal, where you really need to be on your toes when you're driving anyways since people are so aggressive. People need to put both hands on the wheel and drive.

The bottom line is that some people can multitask without a problem. The majority of people can not multitask. For example, a good police officer or pilot has to multitask on a regular basis. If they fail to multitask effectively, they soon become a liability.

In the mid 90's, in Fairfax County Virginia, A Trooper followed a woman on I-95 for 2 miles and pulled her over for doing that, giving her a reckless driving ticket. One of those miles, he had his lights on and she didnt notice.

Why do people have their windows down when it's pouring down rain?

Some smokers have told me it is so there smoke doesn't stink up the car, that way they can hide it from there wife that they are smoking.

Funny you should mention that though, at my apt when I woke up yesterday afternoon there was a honda accord outside in the rain with its sunroof open. Served them right though for parking in a handicap space when they have no permit or need to park there.

Funny thing... I was just driving home from work within the last hour... with the flow of traffic going 65-70, I got stuck behind someone in the left lane going 50. As I finally pulled around them and looked over, I saw that she was talking on a cell phone.

I just saw on the news down here yesterday or today they are proposing a new law basically saying you must be do the speed limit in the left lane or you can be pulled over issued a ticket and given 4 points on your license. there theroy is it will reduce road rage if people aren't driveing to slow in the fast lane.

Man, I wish we'd get something like that here! What angers me is that the left lane is not just the fast lane, it's a passing lane. If you are in it, you should be going faster than the people on the right! Not slower, and not the same speed. Faster. Otherwise, pick a different lane.

When I lived up north I was driving back from my sisters collage with her in the car everytime I went in the fast lane on NJ turnpike and someone was driving 50MPH in front of me she would say the same thing, then she told me to flash my highbeams. ( I didn't do that one)

I will admit to being an obnoxious ***** if someone is doing 50 in the left lane. I won't detail it here (although use of my highbeams is involved  )... however, I figure I should probably invest in a bullet-proof vest...

Oh come on now road rage isn't that bad in southern California, well the vest proably wouldn't be a bad idea now that I think about that one.

On the flip side the truck I use at work has these incredibly bright annoying strobe lights on the back of it, I rarely use them but there was one time I had A Dynamic bus following me about 5 feet off my bumper while I was traveling at the speed limit and I was starting to pull over and he honked at me so I returned the gesture by turning on all the annoying rear facing strobe and high intestiy work lights lights. (note they are not blinding just annoying and they are also road legal to drive with turned on)

At least on the highway in America, if someone is moving slowly in the outside lane you can pass on the other side of them. Here that's not an option. So the big problem is someone in the middle lane going slowly. They stay there because "It's difficult to get back into in in case I need to overtake a lorry" :fork:

I also wish we had the equivalent of being able to turn a right (here it would be a left) at red traffic lights when the way is clear.

My only problem with cell phones in moving vehicles involves driving in Parking lots.

I have had more close calls in parking lots because of cell phone users than anywhere else.

In a parking lot there are sharp turns, cars pulling backwards and forwards, Children running round, people loading groceries and constant entering and exiting of vehicles.

You need 100% of your focus on driving when in a parking lot.
No talking to the person next to you, no phones, no playing with radio knobs (or any other kind of knobs for that matter) no eating, and no drinking.

I see this alot and it not only gets my blood boiling, it scares the heck out of me.

People in parking lots on cell phones are accidents waiting to happen.

I have no problem with cell phone users on the interstates or on long straight-aways...but driving in heavy traffic and parking lots requires ALL your attention.
PLEASE PUT THE TOYS AWAY PEOPLE...AND FOCUS ON YOUR DRIVING

The only problem that I could see with that is the wording, and the enforcement. Most people would read that as "As long as I am doing the speed limit in the left lane, I'm ok." NOT the way it is implied, "If you are in the left lane, you must be doing the speed limit or more." If the FHP and I guess the OCSD (?) enforce that law, to keep traffic moving and reduce road rage, then it might work.

Unfortunately, there are TONS of laws on the books that are not enforced. And then MORE laws are created to enforce "new" problems (cell phones, applying makup, shaving, reading, etc), which I'll bet that if the original laws were enforced, it would eliminate 90+ % of the "new" problems on the road today.

Unfortunately, many people feel that if they got a ticket for "obstruction" or "careless driving," they say that "the (old) law doesn't mean cell phones!" So, then the state or local legislature has to enact a new law that specifically bans certain things (like cell phones).

Here in NJ, our wonderful  (acting) governor wants to create a law that a police officer can issue a ticket to someone who is smoking in a car with a minor. Now, I do see a valid point - that second hand smoke is bad for children (and even adults), but to create a law against it? :veryconfu My point is that if we "force" police to police the public in that way - cell phones, smoking in cars, etc. people will complain loudly about "where are the cops?" when home robberies start going up. "Where are cops?" "They are busy writing tickets for people using a cell phone, driving under the speed limit in the left lane, and smoking in their car with their child in the back seat."

I'm NOT saying that using a cell phone, or driving at 40 mph in the left lane, etc should be allowed, but I would rather see a more common sense and more training and education approach to driving.

That's been the big uproar here. They passed the "Left Lane Law" here last year and you should have seen how many letters poured in to the editorials pages! The reality is, around here, you're not going to get pulled over for doing less than 10 under. That's from the mouths of officers themselves. They just have more important things to take care of, and why pull someone over for doing 9 over when the next person is likely over by 20?

I once saw someone driving down the interstate reading a book. I swear, I couldn't make that up. Reading a book. Like, a novel. Had it resting on his steering wheel. I was baffled. :veryconfu

We passed a guy looking at on the highway once.  And no, his hands weren't at ten and two. :lookaroun

Too bad we can't control every damn thing that every damn person does in their car. (Nor do I want us to get to that point) I use my phone in the car all the time, it's when I schedule my appointments, do follow up, etc. I dial at the stoplights, and there we have it. *shrug* Not saying it's the best idea ever, but it's what I do. I have yet to look down from where I'm going to see what I'm doing with the phone, but the 4 kids in the back of the car is another story. :brick: :brick:
