Since I think you are being serious,

It was in a AFI thread on DHS.Amazing it wasn't on EPCOT isn't it?Poor EPCOT always gets the controversy and DHS did the trick. Was a few weeks ago anyway.

jakeman is my homeboy wdwmagiceer.....epcot is a busniess...its a theme park...one should have fun.....its just that some think fun is learning and others...well many others thank fun is thrilling fun is corny fun is silly....so other than some of my personal cosmetic opinions of Epcot, in terms of future world entrance or innoventions plaza, the park still entertains, and informs, does it inspire...meh? I personally feel that there could have been a better balance....touch screens in SSE? sure....cool...interactive...used for language and later in the post show....but taking out fiber optics and stuff and making the ending only to see a touch screen and not adding effects in the descent and then allowing anyone to either watch their screen or look around at whatever....meh...it would have allowed choice.

I agree...(to the EPCOT comment and the Merfcrazy)I just wish we could bring some of the wonder and inspiration back into the park like in the old EPCOT.But let's not do this all over again...:lookaroun

yes I know, its ironic....we are so passionate about this freaking place in the swamps of florida whose icon is a giant golfball secretely sponsored by PGA....and yet for the most part....no matter what we say or what we do....the fact remains is that the majority of guests who visit Epcot do not want to be educated......if they had a cinderella meet and greet in front of the universe of energy you would still have a bunch of people lining up to meet her.

And I usually have some back up!

*waves flags with the old Epcot symbol to signal other purists*

Just kidding...;)

Sorry! By the time I found this thread I couldn't figure out what the heck was being debated...

No, EPCOT doesn't need saving. I go there to hang out - it's the best park to go and just be...drink in hand...in a really neat atmosphere. I think I'm past the point of expecting education from EPCOT - even though I do still learn stuff while I am there, despite my best efforts. :lookaroun:lol:

I think making the Food & Wine Festival a twice a year event would be cool, though. The Flower fest is great, but what about hosting a Disney -sponsored science fair for kids...or having some annual science-based festival...? I think the additional activities make the place really interesting.

Then again I see EPCOT through the eyes of someone that is there at least once a month. New and different is good to me. I do get nostalgic but in a weird way being at Celebration 25 closed a chapter in my mind and I'm cool with starting a new 25 years.

Here is the difference though, in your opinion (which you are entitled to) there is the IDEA of Epcot. The idea of Epcot that you have is marketing. The idea of Epcot is layers upon layers of your interpretation of what the park should be and your opinion that Epcot is more important than it really is. Having this idea is fine, blasting those who do not get it and criticising Imagineers that cannot read your mind and build the park with your higher purpose is unfair and egotistical.

As to yankspy, no worries! I don't think I've ever gotten upset over anything written on the internet!

With your first statement, not to wax philisophically, because I'm not good at that, but I would disagree that the inspiration of inaction does anyone any good except the person that is "inspired". This is a contradiction of the Epcot purist arguement. You can't inspired by the spirit of Epcot to build a Walt utopia but then just say, "That was nice." If this inspiration is really that heartfelt and important there would be action beyond preserving your vision of the parks.

It's not a theme parks equally duel purpose to inspire and make money. It's primary purpose is to make money. If you get inspired, fine, but it's like finding $20 in the bathroom. You weren't in there to find money, but it was a nice surprise.

With regards to my being duped, I would have to disagree. I don't care about how the parks are marketed right now. I go to Disney to spend time with my family and friends and make memories in a fun, relatively safe environment. Additionally, if the quality of Disney or their marketing changes in a direction that I don't care for I have no problems taking my dollars elsewhere.

When it comes down to it, it goes back to the change arguement. I don't get to worked up about the changes because WDW is bigger than the sum of its parts for me. Not the idea, or the social impact, but the good times I have with friends and families. Nothing more and nothing less. I don't go to WDW to be educated or to be inspired. I go to eat until I can burst, ride some rides, and spend time with the ones I care about.
Fair enough. I have to say, I am generally oblivious to the social impact of Epcot when I am there. I enjoy WDW so much because it is the one place in the world that manages to take me away from my thoughts. I actually enjoyed the new SSE as well. As far as the purist thing, I am very careful of thinking about "how things were" because nostalgia has a way of skewing things as has been mentioned already. There is a funny story from the former mayor of NY, Ed Koch. When he got elected, an old woman approached him and said, "make it the way it was". His answer was "Madam, it never was the way you remember it but I will try". I am sure that it is no coincidence that Epcot and MK are my favorites simply because I remember them as a child. For the record, I like Mission Space. Did I like Horizons more? Yes. Yet, I can accept change as well. When I feel nostalgic, I always have Martin's videos. Sorry, I am sort of generally responding to three pages of comments and so my thoughts are sort of all over the place.

HAH!..."And the little bead of sweat just hangs there...!"

I guess i am a pseudo purist. I just like the vision of the future and the aspect of edutainment. I'm gunna miss SSE's grand mysterious style....

Same here...I think that's why it's such a controversial issue.I just wish New Epcot would include some of this "mystery".

Sorry! By the time I found this thread I couldn't figure out what the heck was being debated...

I kinda feel the same.I am more excited for EPCOT's future than ever before...It should be noted, however, then when planning for the future, taking cues for the past would not hurt.We don't want annother half dead park do we?

It was half dead before they made all the changes...now that they have, it is definitely no longer a dead park. :lookaroun

Ok, let's say I'm visiting Epcot in about 15-25 years, here's what I what expect to see:

An updated SSE with a new narrator
Innoventions with new exhibits
An updated Universe of Energy
A new multi-attraction pavilion where WoL sits now (hopefully!)
Mission: Space with a new theme, depending on what's currently happening with the space program
Test Track with slightly updated technology
Probably a pretty similar Seas with Nemo and Friends
An updated Living with the Land to showcase newer agricultural technologies
Possibly a new film for Soarin'
A 3-D show replacement for HIStA
A new JII ride, possibly coinciding with the new 3-D film
One new pavilion in WS (Hopefully)
A new attraction in a existing WS pavilion

I know that was a little vague, but I think all of those things are possible.
