Does Disney Have Potter?

Seems like Screamscape has an interesting rumor....

Disney News - (7/25/03) While this news is a bit unusual, it seems the head of Universal Orlando was having an open Q&A lunch session with his staff a few weeks ago when he was asked if Universal had any plans to pursue either the Harry Potter franchise or Lord of the Rings for possible future park projects. Bob Gault’s answer was that “Disney has Harry Potter wrapped up” and that Universal was instead checking into Lord of the Rings. This could be big news for the parks, though Disney did already buy the broadcast rights to the first Harry Potter film for ABC.

Thoughts? Comments? Could this be a blow for Universal?

Warner Brothers owns the rights not to Harry Potter, but to Distribution in the U.S.

We studied this is a business law and ethics class of mine, a few months ago.

It seems that Warner Brothers owns the rights to distribute Harry Potter merchandise and movie/merchandise however they see fit.

If they want to see Disney licensing rights to build an attraction, they absolutely can.

I don't know an awful lot about this subject, however, for the short term a Harry Potter attraction would be a wise idea as there is such a hype around it, however, bubbles burst, and I think that Harry Potter is one that will!

Considering that Harry Potter is an international Phenomenon...
And that is a fact, not oppinion...

It has almost as many translations and copies in print as the King James Bible...
fact, not oppinion...

And Disney World is the largest vacation destination for the world...
again fact, not oppinion...

Harry Potter ride would be a great idea...

But where to put it? In MGM Between Muppetts and Star wars?

I'd rather see an interpretation of the book rather than a ride-based-on-the-movie ride we always see. I think there is a spot for a Harry Potter ride when the MGM expansion continues for the new stunt show.

I'd love to see something that was based on the story line carried through the books.

I think the best would be a ride like Pirates or the Haunted mansion, that takes you through the world of harry potter.

You could go through the different wizarding towns, the weasley family house, the malfoy family house, different places at the Hogwarts castle, through the forbidden forest.

If you did it like that, you could use audioanimatronics (that people have been complaining about vanishing) to represent characters from the movies/ books

The problem I see is trying to make an attraction (if Disney does indeed have the rights) that does not mirror the movies in any way. WB has the movies, so if Disney was to create an attraction, even a little character meet-n'-greet, they'd have to be careful they didn't infringe on the movie, the way the movie interpreted the books... Disney would have to interpret the books directly, not the movie... At least, that is my humble opinion.. And certainly may not be the case, i.e. the rights just MIGHT allow for an attraction to be based on scenes from the movie, I'm just not sure... :)

Good Licensing Example... currently Busch has a Goosebumps 4D attraction.

Interpreting the books and not the movie would be simple. There are hundreds of thousands of interpretations of the books. The movie is just one interpretation. 90% of the merchandies you see on the shelves is Harry Potter, but not from the movie.

So instead of making animatronic Daniel Radcliffe, you have animatronic nobody that looks like Harry Potter. People would recognize the glasses and scar as harry potter a lot quicker than they would realize it isn't suppose to be Daniel Radcliffe

If Disney does gain the rights to Harry Potter do you think it will be manifested as a ride or as a stageshow/walk through?

There is a lot of discussion regarding the longevity of the Harry Potter sereis. Steven Kings seems to think the books will be in the LOTR category.

I think the books will be around longer than people assume. Like LOTR, the books don't assess any current themes or ideas that may be out date in 5,10,20 years. It's a completely unique universe. There is a need for fantasy in a persons life, and like LOTR , Harry potter seems to be a good outlet for people.

I do think that like LOTR , Harry potter will experience its extreme highs, and very low lows.

Actually, the movie was based on the American covers... That's why Daniel Radcliffe "looks like" Harry Potter. The way JK Rowling wrote it, I don't think you can create something too different from the movies, the description is just to accurate. I agree with Davis, they should think of a dark ride-type attraction, something along the lines of PotC or Haunted Mansion, but basing it on the books and not the movies. But about looks and stuff, I don't think it's possible to stray too far away from the movies...

Did that make any sense?

Perfect sense!

Considering the last two books are nowhere near being published and they are only just filming the third book now, I think a Potter attraction is a great longish term idea for an attraction!

But why wont they do a James Bond show/attraction???????? Thats got MAJOR appeal!

There is a Moaning Myrtle toilet seat out there? E-bay, here I come.

Christopher Columbus is not directing the 3rd movie and none of the actors are signed on for anything past the third movie. I'm not sure where I'm going with this but I think that has to be taken into consideration.

I would love to see a Harry Potter attraction but I'm not sure if something so Warner Brothers belongs in a Disney park. Would all the merchandise have WB slapped all over the place?

lol!, no, before the movie she had to go through sessions of viewing possible merchandising for Harry Potter, some of it was really weired and downright strange like the moaning murtle toilet seat, of course she had her say and the murtle toilet seat never got made, lol then later on she made a comment about killing harry off in the last book just to kill off the merchandise...

i really wouldn't want a HP ride to be built at Disney, nor a lord of the rings ride at universal, keep em in film and book...
