I don't want to try and spark a great debate or anything, and I know a lot of people who went in the 80s and early 90s will agree that Mission: Space is definitely not superior to Horizons. I was 6 years old when Horizons closed but I went on it enough to have a vivid memory of it. It was amazing and I'm obsessed with it to this day. Mission Space doesn't do it for me. I know this generation likes Mission: Space because its what they grew up with. But for those who have experienced both, do you think Disney succeeded in developing an attraction that is superior? Or one that isn't as "Disney"? To me, it just hasn't got that "spark".

I don't mind the Mission: Space building, or even the well themed queue.

However, I don't like the ride very much (and, it certainly doesn't have any re-rideability...I could easily skip it and not feel I missed out)... I also despise the poorly themed post-show.
It's a very lame ride, IMO. I'm not willing to go on the more intense side, and the less intense is just me watching a video in a cramped chamber.

Mission Space is pretty good, but there is, in my opinion, one glaring flaw....it's not re-rideable. Once you've ridden it, there's really no point in going back. The worst part of all is that they have control sticks and buttons to press....but it really does nothing. Anything you do inside the cabin has no affect on what happens on the screen.
Someone in your cabin doesn't press a button? "AUTOMATIC OVERRIDE".
Then the asteroid field and the Mars descent....Gary Sinise is giving you commands on what to do with the control stick. But what happens if you don't? "AUTOMATIC OVERRIDE" and the stick starts moving with Sinise's commands.

How about several different scenarios, depending on what choices the riders make? Like if someone doesn't jettison the booster rockets, having to make an emergency landing on the moon instead?
Or...and I know this is completely grim...but what about a death sequence? Say if your pilot isn't as good as navigating asteroids as Han Solo? Or how about everyone decinding to move a muscle? "CRASH!"
Then Sinise pops onto the screen to inform you that you are a miserable failure and you are all "dead" now, and you should have probably gone to play the kiddie games at the end instead.

I like the thrill of Mission Space and feel it's a good contrast to the milder attractions in Future World, Ellen's Energy and Spaceship Earth, for example. I think the point of Disney in general is to mix it up, and this ride helped that.

I realize there are many fans of classic rides and I completely understand that too.

Mission: Space is fun as a thrill ride, and they made a decent attempt at incorporating theming into it, IMO. We've done it as many as 3 times in a row, walk-on (orange - intense version).
But, that being said, it can't even come close to holding a candle to Horizons. When it comes to original Disney vision, creativity, Imagineering, and theming, Horizons was FAR superior.
Mission: Space = decently themed thrill ride that we enjoy.
I need a bumper sticker/t-shirt that says... "I'd rather be riding Horizons".

Back before I was on the Internet a lot looking up Disney stuff we went the year it was demolished in half like that famous photo. I was excited to ride it and was heartbroken when I saw what they were doing to it!!!

I am not a fan of mission space at all! I never knew it was a centrifuge spinning ride like that. I got so sick...I have yet to go on it again...not even up for the green side. That is one ride we always skip and we don't skip much at any park...

Same! I was only 9 when Mission: Space opened. I went on it opening day (I had been going on Horizons for for the first six years of my life) and thought itd be similar. I couldn't have been more wrong. My whole family got sick.

I went in 1991, but I don't remember much at all from that trip and when we went again in 1995 Horizons had already closed and it was closed again in 2000. So I have no memory of it and I really don't get any enjoyment watching the videos of it online (unlike Worlds of Motion, Listen to the Land and the original Universe of Energy). So I have to say I prefer Mission Space better.

I only got to experience Horizons once, at age 5. And I only remember bits and pieces - the seabase, the video selection at the end, the hanging omnimover thing. But I do remember the feeling it gave me of really getting a glimpse into the future.

Mission Space was cool for the first 30 seconds, and then it turned out you didn't even get to do anything. Granted, I've never done it with the centrifuge spinning, so maybe then I'd like it more. But I don't think a simple physical sensation could hold a candle to the inspiring moment Horizons had.
