I thought that someone else might have thought of a thread on this subject by now, but no. I guess I'm going to have to start a thread on this now...

Where do these little rivalries among fans between Disneyland and Walt Disney World come from?

From the fans. DLR fans like to mention the fact that Disneyland is the only park Walt Disney personally "built" and experiences and it's the original. WDW fans like to mention the size and all the different things to do.

That's because DLC stinks.

<runs away quickly...and is also seriously kidding>

I think a lot of people who grew up with WDW haven't done DLC (and yes, I still call it DLC not DLR). Once you've been, it's hard to look at many things at WDW the same. By the same right, you also learn to appreciate a lot of the good things WDW has going for it.

I think both are awesome, and both deserve a visit.

Yes however these same people also forget that Walt was the one who bought all the land WDW sits on and he also visited the land many times to map out Epcot and what areas were suitable for construction and such. So he technically has stepped foot on WDW land so it's almost the same thing.

Dude... It's just Disneyland. There's no need for the California. It came first. All the copies have the locations attached. Disneyland is the original... No need for the location.:)

There are lots of DLR fans who refuse to visit WDW. I don't know why, the more Disney, the better.

Walt Disney's involvement with Disneyland and his involvement with WDW really can't be compared. Not even close to being the same thing. To be blunt, most DL fans don't care that he bought land in Florida. He wasn't there for its construction and completion.

As a side note...I'm trying to campaign the ERB folks on youtube to do Walt Disney vs Warner Bros.

Care to join? Comment on their vids! <grin>

I enjoy them both. I was a frequent WDW visitor for many years because I lived on the east coast and it was cheaper to fly to Florida. However, since moving out to SoCal three years ago for a new job, I naturally started going to Disneyland a lot more.

I think both resorts have a lot to offer. WDW has the 'blessing of size', and as such, can offer many more amenities to vacationers that can keep them occupied on their property for days. Disneyland, IMO has a lot more charm than any of the parks in WDW, and is steeped in quite a bit of history. It is indeed Walt's park and you sense it the moment you step under the railroad tracks and into town square. From Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln to the Storybook Land Canal Boats, there are tons of touches throughout the park that serve as a reminder of its almost 60-year legacy. However, Epcot (despite the many changes its undergone) remains one of my all-time favorite places, and I'll always have a soft spot for the Magic Kingdom, as it is the first Disney park I ever went to at the young age of 4.

Which is better? I don't know, but I think both resorts offer their visitors a great time.

The rivalry could come from which Disney theme park you visited first.

I really don't get into the rivalry though because Disneyland is a theme park I would like like to visit at some point despite the fact WDW is shorter to go than Disney Land. The thing is WDW is a long way from where I live though.

I couldn't have written this better myself. My sentiments exactly (except that I'm in NorCal) and my first WDW trip was when I was six. Otherwise, 100% agreement.

I have been to DL several times, I always remember the first time I saw it in 1959. It was as decribed in the WDW specials an oasis in a sea of cheap restaurants and motels. Walt wanted better so he purchased the land in Florida but didn't get to see his dream completed. IMHO he would be proud of both WDW and DL as it stands now.
