DL vs. WDW rivalries

My boyfriend and I have a serious rivalry going on between Disneyland and WDW. He believes that Disneyland is superior, I believe WDW is. But for us I think it has a lot to do with how he grew up going to California and I grew up going to Florida. We also get into some pretty intense fights over the Main Street Electrical Parade and Spectromagic, good thing we don't fight about petty issues or anything.

Walt Disney's involvement with Disneyland and his involvement with WDW really can't be compared. Not even close to being the same thing. To be blunt, most DL fans don't care that he bought land in Florida. He wasn't there for its construction and completion.
Who cares if he was or wasn't there for it, it was all his brain child. I have found that most people that don't like WDW that are DLR fans just don't go into it with an open mind when they go visit....they complain about the size and everything being so spread out, and most WDW fans that don't like DLR have the exact opposite complaint, that its to small and cramped. To me, DLR is more fantasy and fairytale like, and WDW is more grandiose and majestic. Both have things to offer that the other does not and both have things that they need improvement on. Also, Californian's are very sensitive to people talking bad about DLR (being a Californian I can say this), but Floridians don't really seem to care as much....they just want people to come and spend money to help the economy.

If you go back and read the posts, you'll know I was responding to someone who stated that Walt's involvement with Disneyland and WDW was almost the same, which is absurd. I don't know how you ended up talking about size and space and offerings and such. Has nothing to do with what I posted.

Seriously?!? 6 Flags GA better than either WDW or DL would be a stretch. I love big coasters, but 6 Flags does not know how to maintain its parks. And, they have absolutely no clue about managing crowd size, lines, etc. Worst of all, their AP is so cheap, the park becomes a babysitter for too many teens with nothing better to do during the summer. I live in ATL and we had a family AP for 6 Flags for one year. We got our money's worth, but the park is such a disappointment compared to both WDW and DL.

I think the 6 Flags problem is the management company. Magic Mountain in CA was better before 6 Flags took over. White Water in GA was better before 6 Flags took over. I see a bad track record. Of course YMMV.

Back to Disney... :) Each park to me has its own magical feel. Pirates at DL is just so much better and I really enjoy the Matterhorn. Oh, and Small World at DL does not look like an afterthought like it is in MK. OTOH, I really like the new Fantasyland at MK, the larger castle, and its size. I love them both because they are different. Great memories at both.
You missed my point entirely.

I can all but guarantee you that there is a non-zero number of people who prefer any amusement park you can name over WDW or DL or anything else for that matter. Pick any location on the planet and you will probably find someone who regards it as their favorite place on earth. Sure, those people are in the minority, but they do exist.

I have a very good friend in Atlanta who grew up going to Six Flags over GA, and loves that park like a child. I've tried to talk him into visiting WDW, since the things he loves about SFoG (the very minimal efforts at theming through most of the park, and especially the delightful Disney-esque Monster Plantation) abound at Disney.

He is intrigued, but for various personal reasons, hasn't made a trip to Disney yet. He might never make it. So for now, he remains a Six Flags devotee by default.

Master Yoda's point was everyone has different tastes and likes. I know plenty of people who hate Disneyland and love Six Flags, one of those people being my uncle. He came to California for a visit and I suggested we go to Disneyland. He kindly told me no and suggested Magic Mountain instead.

We all have different tastes and likes, which is a good thing.

The way I look at it Disneyland is Art, Walt Disneyworld is Science. Neither is superior to the other just different, each excel in their own ways. I grew up going to Disneyland frequently, but I live closer World and probably have spent nearly equal times at both resorts. Each resort has a strong and storied history to it. Disneyland is first, and will always be the original and have the benefit of Walt's legacy along with other US industrial giants that started the park. But World has so much history as well despite being 16 years younger - stolport, seven seas lagoon wave machine, the MK tunnel, the purchase of the land itself and governing body of RCID.

I love the compactness and charm of Disneyland, being able to walk between to parks. I'm not crazy about the buses at World and think the legacy of the property is not entirely being fulfilled, but the entering process (parking, TTC, turnstiles and rounding Town Square to see the castle)is still one of the highlights of each my WDW trips.

I have been to both DL and WDW. I have an endearing LOVE for WDW, but, Splash Mountain is better at DL.
You can loose yourself in the magic at both places, but at WDW, you don't have to look at everyday life....everyday.
Each location has its perks, each has its issues.

I think the rivalries come from people who don't/can't visit both that often if at all.
I'm fortunate enough to be able to and I love both pretty much equally.
I don't understand people who love WDW and hate on DL though... Without DL there is no WDW.

I hear that Disneyland people sat that Disneyland is a much better park then Magic Kingdom alone which I can believe. I also have heard that some Anaheim locals or anyone in the area will go to Disney World and not even set foot in the Magic Kingdom since they can go to Disneyland whenever they want. A family friend of mine said Disneyland has better upkeep then the magic Kingdom which is funny because I always thought the upkeep there was a bit slack, even compared to Epcot at times.

Somewhere in Disney Heaven there is a resort consisting of Disneyland right next door to Epcot. But still connected by monorail for some reason.

You think Splash Mountain is better at Disneyland? It was Splash you were talking about and not Space Mountain right? Because Splash Mountain at Disneyland is shorter than the version in MK. It also goes through the scenes a lot quicker and is a faster pace. MK is more of a scenic route and it takes longer to do. When my wife and I first went on Splash at Disneyland we noticed the abruptness to it. Still a great ride of course, just like Pirates is still a great ride at WDW despite being half as long as the DL version. But I'm curious why you picked Splash Mountain as being better at DL.

Arguments can be made either way, but the ride path of the original Disneyland version of Splash Mountain is 200 feet longer than the Magic Kingdom and the Disneyland version also has far more animated characters (105 to Magic Kingdom's 68).

Then why is the time shorter? I thought that at Disneyland it was 9 minutes and at WDW, it was 11.

Because the boats go through the ride faster at DL.

Exactly. 4 feet per second vs 3.

Of course, with the Magic Kingdom's addition of lap restraints the theoretical 3fps figure for the MK version of Splash really doesn't mean anything anymore. These things have slowed down the load/unload point so much that not only is there always a literal logjam before load, there are subsequent jams at nearly every other vehicle gate on back through the attraction. It's rare to be able to do a ride through of the WDW version in less than 13 minutes.

Glad I wasn't just making stuff up when I said I thought the DL Splash was a lot faster than WDW's. Yes, there are more figures in DL, but the ones in MK are custom-made to look like the characters; many in the DL version are recycled from America Sings and even the Brer Rabbit over there doesn't look much like the character. The MK Splash is the definitive version to me... when everything is working. So I guess Tokyo is the definitive version?
