Disney's Streaming Services: Disney+ (and Hulu, ESPN+, Star, & hotstar)

Just for my curiosity, but is there an estimate on how much add revenue is generated per Disney+ subscriber a month on average?

There’s something… ironic… about how the largest multimedia conglomerate in the world is going to make a large chunk of its ad revenue from its streaming service on the back of an Australian public television cartoon licensed out of the UK.
This conglomerate's initial content offerings was 90% public domain or licensed content. Very little original IP from the outset.

Update on the process to purchase the remaining stake in Hulu from Comcast via Deadline.

"Comcast has collected what it hopes will be a first payment from Disney for its stake in Hulu, marking “the beginning of a process” to value the streamer, company President Mike Cavanagh said at a media conference Monday.

The anticipated $8.5 billion dollar check arrived Friday, he told investors at a UBS media conference in NYC.

Disney said it that it will acquire the remaining 33% stake in Hulu it doesn’t already own from the NBC Universal parent. A deal between the Hulu owners established a floor of about that amount. Any additional payout, or not, will depend on an evaluation process underway with both companies and their investment banks. The process was moved up — to this fall from January of 2024 — and the Disney check was due Dec. 1.

The 2019 agreement included a put/call that allowed Comcast to ‘put’ its stake to Disney, or the Bob Iger-run company to buy it. Iger wasn’t sure at first but ultimately decided owning the asset in full makes sense.

The “check cleared, it’s in the account,” Cavanagh said. “We expect, and certainly hope to get more than that once the process ends. But it’s really just the beginning,”"

So when it comes to Hulu, the Value is going to be the LiveTV aspect and those who don't want Disney+ and want it as a separate app only.

I could be mistaken but believe it was last year where either a majority (or almost all) standalone Hulu SVOD subs were converted to the Bundle automatically. And its only the LiveTV subs that remain as the "standalone" Hulu subs, and there is only 4.6M of those.

The "value" of Hulu is in the content and the subs, which is why Disney is combining them into a single experience on D+. So starting in March 2024 only the LiveTV subs will be counted separately, all other D+/Hulu subs in the US will be counted as D+ subs, just like D+/Star subs outside the US.

Live TV will require the standalone Hulu app. At least, for now. Also, some Hulu content won't be available within D+ due to licensing restrictions.

Hulu within D+ will, for now, not 'remember' some of your options. E.g., if you watched the first two episodes of a series, it won't know that and queue you up for ep.3.

Fuller integration is being worked on during this "beta."

I'm hoping they bring more of the Hulu features into D+, like the ability to clear your "Continue to watch" section. Its annoying to have to see that even though I've already finished a movie/show.

Yeah, my watchlist didn't carry over and I don't feel like adding all the shows and movies from one to the other. I'll just stick with the separate services unless they can get that together.

And yes, I understand this is the beta so that may happen eventually.

Disney is reportedly considering adding gaming and shopping experiences on Disney+.

"Advertisers have eyed the Disney+ streaming hub as a place where they might tuck a promotional message alongside the binge-watch of a Marvel series, or, potentially “Phineas & Ferb.” Soon, however, Madison Avenue may have some other opportunities to consider.

Disney is mulling the launch of shopping and gaming experiences on the streaming outlet, with which advertisers could get involved, according to Rita Ferro, president of Disney Advertising Sales. “The world of advertising experiences on AVOD is an important place to be involved in,” Ferro tells Variety, hinting that a new presentation Disney has slated for Las Vegas on Jan. 10 would reveal “what the next level of ad innovations will be” from the company."

So Disney moving forward with turning D+ into their central hub.

If anyone still doubts that Disney doesn’t see D+ as the one of the core pieces of the company’s future, exhibit A.
