Lower your expectations.
Watched New Mutants. Didn't hate it. :)

I mean was it a mess riddled with rewrites and reshoots and didn't know what kind of movie it was trying to be (Marvel, horror, YA romance)? Sure.

But I FINALLY got to see
Lockheed in action
and that was reason enough to LOVE parts of it. :) I gave Inhumans the same pass for finally giving me Lockjaw! (Plus even in a silent role Anson Mount was clearly a star.)

Huh, I was wonder what this was when I saw it on the D+ list for November.

It seems to be actually a Disney channel show that will be on D+ the next day. Disney's PR on what's coming to D+ in November didn't flag this as an original (for D+) as such...

Monday, November 28

- Mickey Saves Christmas

More info on the show here:

Then again the distinction between Disney linear channel content and D+ content become more and more blurred.

What's even more interesting is they've gone back to the more modern classic look for Mickey rather than the Iwerks inspired version from the recent shorts. Which makes sense given that I assume since he posted it that its Iwan voicing Mickey rather than Diamantopoulos.

"Ronny Chieng and Chloe Bennet have joined the cast of Interior Chinatown, a new series in the works for Hulu from 20th Television and creator/executive producer Charles Yu, who wrote the 2020 bestseller of the same name.

Interior Chinatown follows the story of Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang), a background character trapped in a police procedural trying to find his way into the larger story–and along the way discovers secrets about the strange world he inhabits and his family’s buried history. Chieng will play Fatty Choi, Willis’s best friend whose passions include video games and malted beverages.

Bennet will play Detective Lana Lee, a new lead making her debut appearance in the procedural cop show Black & White. Lana brings a new energy to the series’ reliable but overworked premise.

Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) will direct pilot and executive produce. Yu will EP and serve as showrunner while Rideback, Participant and Dive are exec producing. Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, and Elsie Choi will EP for Rideback; Jeff Skoll and Miura Kite will EP for Participant, and Garrett Basch will EP for Dive. "

My summary:

Disney doesn't want to run events, they want to air/stream them. So, ESPN sold off majority stake in Extreme Games to another company that will run it, while ESPN continues to be its airer/streamer.

They run bowl games and the neutral site kickoff games for college football. And some hoops tournaments.

“The Walt Disney Company announced on Tuesday that it would begin a “limited test” to determine the viability of selling themed merchandise alongside certain Disney+ shows and films. Until Nov. 8, Disney+ subscribers will have exclusive access to a smattering of new products tied to franchises like “Star Wars,” “Black Panther” and “Frozen.” The items include light saber collectibles ($250 to $400) and themed clothing ($27 to $100) that will go on sale in regular retail stores next week.

The shopping option is available only on Disney+ profiles in the United States that have been verified as belonging to users who are 18 and older. The number of Disney+ subscribers in the United States is not known; Disney has said the service has about 45 million customers in North America.

The effort reflects a business reality: Disney+ has more than 150 million subscribers worldwide, up from about 115 million a year ago, but the days of easy growth are over. Disney must work harder to sign up new subscribers and find ways to keep current ones from canceling, especially with a possible recession on the horizon. Exclusive access to merchandise could be one sweetener. Another could involve perks at Disney theme parks, including early access to new rides. Disney+ subscribers have already received discounts at Walt Disney World hotels in Florida.

Access to a “curated collection of merchandise for the upcoming holiday season” is an experiment “to improve the user experience on Disney+, which includes enhancing the benefits of being a subscriber,” Alisa Bowen, president of Disney+, said in a statement.

Disney is also working on a separate Disney+ enhancement that it calls “next-generation storytelling.” That project aims to use data collected on fans during visits to Disney parks — what rides they ride first or repeatedly, for instance — to curate offerings on their Disney+ accounts back home.

The shopping feature, at least for the trial run, is comparatively low-tech. For the next week, pages on the Disney+ app for certain shows and films — “The Mandalorian,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Lightyear” — will alert eligible users about special access to merchandise. Those interested need to open a “shop” tab and then, using a camera on a separate device, scan a QR code that will take them to a gated area of shopDisney, which is Disney’s primary e-commerce portal.”

If only there was some sort of "Disney Store" where you could sell this exclusive merch, verify membership status and up sell other products like park tickets...

You're going to see more and more of the separate Disney sites move into D+. I would imagine very shortly you'll be given the option to even book your next Disney vacation through D+. This has been even mentioned by Chapek in recent months.

D+ is now at the center of the company, every decision moving forward will be set against the backdrop of "how will this help D+" or "how can this be added to D+".

That's backwards.

Stuff like this is using Disney+ to drive merch sales, not the other way around.
How is it backwards? If I'm Disney and I give guests a single place to do everything from stream movies, to buy merch, to buy theme park tickets, instead of having to go to multiple sites, why would that be backwards? That would be convenient and get more guests to remain in D+ longer rather than to go elsewhere, which is the whole point.

You have to look at the long term, not just the single feature being discussed.
