Disney's Magical Express to discontinue luggage delivery after 10pm

This is one cost-cutting measure that I am totally okay with. I have arrived in Disney at late hours before and never used the luggage service anyways. At 10 or 11 at night I have no desire to wait 3 or 4 hours for my stuff to arrive in my room.

This is an acceptable cut. I However, expect that this service will have a convenience fee tacked on by the end of the year. Its not going to be expensive but a little less than the average shuttle service from the airport to WDW hotels.

I completely disagree. People have been floating this unfounded rumor since DME first started.

DME earns tons of money for DME. It is an indirect revenue generator. I can explain more if you'd like. They have no need to charge for something that, by its very essence, brings in revenue. Charging for it would risk a net loss of revenue.

I would be surprised if Disney started charging for DME. Disney loves captive audiences and piling tons of people on their buses to and from MCO is the ultimate captive audience. They can use the 30+ minutes of travel time to advertise the heck out of you. Plus, if they whisk you away the second your feet hit FL it lessens the chance you may get "side tracked" and $pend time $omewhere other than in Di$ney park$. :lookaroun

I see thing differently. At 10 or 11 at night I have no desire to wait at baggage claim and thus delay myself from getting on the available bus and getting myself (and motre importantly, my kids) to bed ASAP.

No matter where I fly, I always pack my my carry-ons with our first 24 hours of supplies just in case the AIRLINE delays my luggage. When I arrive late at night, I REQUEST that my DME bags be held 'til morning so I don't have to waste time at the airport and so I don't have to risk being awakened in the middle of the night by Bell Services.

Packing for a day takes up very very little space when traveling to a warm climate. I just got back from The World 2 days ago, so I speak from recent experience.

If they only did that years ago! It would have saved me many late nights sorting DME luggage. If I remember correctly we wouldn't even deliver to the room past midnight. Instead we would leave a silent message asking what time, they wanted their luggage delivered.

Absolutely. Between pushing two kids in strollers and our 4 bags, this will be very difficult to do and was a definate plus when using ME.

Does anyone know if this only applies to scheduled arrivals after 10pm? We are supposed to arrive in Orlando at 9:43pm in May, but I'm sure we won't get to the ME stand until after 10 and probably would only make it to the gate by 10, so does this mean I'll have to get our luggage myself? JP, can you shed any light on this subject?

That's good, you don't want to be disturbed overnight with your luggage arriving. DME Luggage Transfer was awkward at night anyway--you either got it right away or much later.

We used to use the luggage transportation, but now carry our bags with us--this seems even more convenient especially when traveling at night.

I read this today on Allears... So here is my question. We arrive at MCO at 930p. Do you think it is wise for us to just go and get our luggage ourselves or let DME handle it? Just nervous since we are arriving so close to the luggage cut-off time. Appreciate your help.

GET YOUR LUGGAGE. The real convenience of Magical Express is the free transportation. Grab your luggage, check in at the podium and board your bus. Tip the driver a few bucks if he stows some of your luggage underneath.

If you allow ME to take your luggage, you will probably get your luggage the next morning or at an inconvenient time when you are already in bed.

We always fly in at night and always take our luggage. Used the luggage transport once at night and it failed miserably. Got it the next morning. Luggage transport works well during the day, but SKIP IT AT NIGHT. Anything after 6pm I say skip it.

I'd second the idea to grab your own bags! We used DME when it first started...like that every first week. Our flight was delayed in St.Louis due to weather. It was after 11 pm when we finally arrived. We asked the front desk to hold our bags until morning (we had two very tired little girls). They said sure, no problem. Then bang, bang, bang, 3 AM, here is the poor CM knocking on our door, my fumbling around to open the door and get the suitcases.

Thanks guys! I was on the boarder about this, but since you are experienced in late arrivals, I think I will take your advice and get our owe bags and then go check in at the Magical Express counter.

I have done this both ways and both are OK. I TOTALLY agree with Cleve Rocks though. Make sure you pack at least a day's worth of stuff in case your luggage gets misdirected. Also any valuables or items not easily replaceable should be packed in a carry on, such as glasses, spare contacts, prescriptions, jewelry, camera equipment, money, traveler's checks etc. As far as the question should you pick up your luggage or not, as I said both ways work equally well. Within all of my recent trips, if I have arrived later the hotel has asked me if I wanted my bag that night or the next day so that shouldnt be an issue. If I can let DME take care of me though, I usually will. I like not having to hassle with my bag. Hope this helps! Belle

Exactly how does it generate revenue?

My guess would be that it deters some people from renting cars and therefore they are stuck on property for the duration.

If my choice is to pay for a shuttle or rent a car for a little more (depending on your length of stay) then I'll rent a car. However, if you give me a free shuttle (okay, not free but built into the resort price) I'll skip the rental.

If I have a car I might eat a meal or two off property or go shopping off property.

You hit the nail on the head in your explanation.
You can also add the introduction of the MYW tickets to the list of things Disney did to keep people on-property and spending their money with Disney. (Why go to Universal for $75 for one day when you can add an extra day at Disney for only $3?)

Yup. When we had a car, we would eat a meal at Olive Garden (best Olive Garden in America, lol) and drive out to the WalMart for some things.

Now that we use ME, we are stuck at Disney for the full vacation.
