Bring people in without suggesting the original was “wrong”…and that maybe how it’s perceived.

Imo, anyone thinking this casting implies that that the 1989 version was “wrong” are the ones that are reaching. there’s never been any kind of racial issues attached to TLM prior to this movie (unlike the splash mountain/Song of the South comparison). That so many these days (not referring to here specifically, but in general) equate different to wrong is part of a larger issue. Whether one feels Disney should or shouldn’t oblige that view will never be “resolved” on an internet thread.

You are correct about profit having no bearing on the quality of a film (although sometimes it can). But should you care about profit? Absolutely it should matter. Movie studios, especially Disney, aren't a charity. Everything revolves around profit. God knows how much the people of this board like to throw the "Disney is a Business!" Line around whenever prices come up.

So for as much as I would have liked to see all 3 price of Persia films get made. That would never happen because the first didn't make profit. So if you are a fan of something, and you want it to continue, you should care how profitable something is. Because 9/10 times, that's what determines it's future.

I realize this and I do follow the box office as I find it interesting. But at the end of the day… I don’t own Disney stock… so it does not affect me one way or another…Disney is not endanger of going out of business and will be around another 100 years… and quality and profits don’t always align

Because when Disney starts down the live action sequel/prequel road, I guess it technically has started with Mufasa. If this movie doesn't profit, there's a strong chance they skip mermaid altogether. Or they announce Triton, a tale from the world of the little mermaid.

This thought process doesn't make sense. Why would anyone monitor BO for profitability for sequel/prequel chances outside of analysts?

The general public isn't going to care about BO profitability only whether the movie is good or not, and based on audience reaction TLM 2023 is pretty well received.

It was Chronicles of Narnia for me, I loved those books growing up and really enjoyed the Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe movie but by Dawn Trader it was clear the series was doomed. Ironically they pulled the plug when Dawn did $418 million worldwide against a $150 million budget, I think Disney would be happy with that now.

It’s strange to me that this thread has become almost obsessively focused on box-office takings. There’s so much more to talk about.

The vibe of the thread has definitely been killed. The spoiler thread is largely inactive and I would like to actually talk about the film with those who’ve seen it. Discussion of the actual movie is continuously and constantly being drowned out by the usual suspects.

Of course I understand that profits matter. I just don’t get why this thread has become taken over by that particular topic. It would be like creating a thread devoted to Sleeping Beauty and discussing nothing but the fact that it failed to make a profit upon its initial release.

I'm a fan of plenty of movies that made no money, it doesn't make me any less of a fan.

And so even if talking about only the posters in this thread, outside of those that want the movie to fail so the "remakes" stop being made I don't think anyone here who likes the movie really cares about BO beyond a passing glance. It for sure isn't a measure of how good the movie was to those that like it or how much of a fan they are.

Exactly. Yes I care if it profits. But any time points about the film themselves are brought up to discuss, it’s immediately brought back to box office. I’d like to talk about the film itself, not just in light of its finances.

Yes - not discussion of the characters race and what people feel about that or how that choice influences box office, but actual discussion of the movie amongst people who’ve actually seen it.

Of course it doesn't make you less of a fan. Again, not the point. You fan how you want to fan. All I was doing, was giving my opinion as to why paying attention to box office, as a fan, isn't useless.

Let’s try to get the ball rolling then. What did you think of the way the remake handled the statue? I was initially puzzled as to why it was no longer a portrait of Eric, but I suppose having it represent humanity in general emphasises that Ariel’s desire to join the world above is motivated by more than just a romantic infatuation. That was my reading anyway.

I will, of course, refrain from posting anything that constitutes a spoiler as I understand it, which is to say something that gives away a significant plot detail known only to those who’ve seen the film.)

I did. Like I said, the main talking points have been discussed. What's left is box office and stuff that isn't allowed. So until new people who have seen it post, we get talking about box office. That changes and updates everyday. This is also the general mermaid thread. I think the spoilers thread has more discussion of what you are looking for.
