Disney's Live Action The Little Mermaid

that number is meaningless in the absence of context regarding 1) international box office, and 2) how much it cost to produce. Given those two, this film is going to have to have strong legs to turn a profit.
Box office is A datapoint.

But it must also be adjusted for inflation. If we are to attach any value to the numbers for either side, it must be fare.

Also, what makes a movie money, also can’t be limited to the box office, it must include all ways a given movie makes money; merch, streaming, physical media releases, etc.

It’s very hard to measure and may take a long time to know.

All that said, it’s always nice to know you made money on that single data point because then you know, everything else is gravy.

Who woulda thought remaking a 30 year old cartoon movie about a mermaid who happens to be white, and now happens to be black, would generate so much bickering lol

That number is not adjusted for inflation so it means nothing. It’s just more spin.

Let’s just deal in facts- Mermaid opened to 164M global

With a movie of this budget and marketing campaign that is a big problem.

It is well within the realm of possibility if this doesn’t have an amazing 2nd weekend domestic hold, that it is going to lose a lot of money.

It’s not a complete failure yet but the writing is on the wall.

This weekend will let us know for sure.
Well, I'm going to see it again tonight in that 4DX format that blows wind and squirts water and does lightning throughout the theatre and shakes your chair around in every direction so violently that it tries to murder you.... in exchange for nearly $30.00 (in NYC), so they can add that little piece of change to their wallet, and the RDX theatre I'm going to only has 11 seats left at the 7PM showing....on a Tuesday night.

This is not a flop, people. Haters need to get over it.

Domestic looks decent. Didn't hit Lion King numbers though. International is weak but I think that was somewhat expected. We will see if it keeps it up domestically and can turn a profit.
I never expected The Little Mermaid to hit Lion King numbers…Lion King is probably the most popular film of the Disney renaissance era…and reaches a wider audience

I do however think The Little Mermaid is a success…it had one of the best opening weekends of the year…a top 5 Memorial Day weekend opening and is well like by people who actually saw the movie

I think it’s biggest issue is the crowded movie release schedule, but I think every movie in the next month will not be making it’s potential profits for the same reason

You can’t find a bigger Disney shill than this women.

You can tell how delusional she is blaming it’s failure on trolls.

Your only goal on this thread is to trash the freaking movie. I think you have made your point. Why don't you take your toys and head on over to the Elemental thread and get started on that one next.

Well just spend another 400 Million or so on tickets and this may break even.

You can do it !

I do think it's kind of funny that the standards for Disney remakes are so low that TLM's whopping 68% RT score is considered some kind of critical success. Lol
And in the past, we have been lectured by all the film experts on here that the audience score is the only score that counts - because the reviewers are bought and paid for - that is what we have been told in the various lectures. Now that the audience score for this movie is 95% positive, apparently the rules have changed.

Trying to silence a user I see.

I believe the statement from your ilk has been to 'put him on ignore.' That would be better than you complaining nonstop about people's thoughts and opinions that you disagree with.

Now that the initial release wave of movie goers have gone word of mouth and good experience seeing it will drive the numbers now. How many folks are interested in seeing it but will be satisfied to wait for D+? 80 mil + in marketing is one big push to get it to where it is now is a strong effort. However, marketing will not be a driver in continued success now that it is released.

I never buy anecdotal evidence. At our local theater, the 7 PM showing has 7 seats sold. I don't think that is a sign of anything either. I don't expect it to be a flop (nor do I have any desire to see it cause I hate these remakes). It had a decent opening, but the sign will be how well it holds it's numbers in the coming weekends (FYI, I expect it will and will be at least a moderate success). I think if they lose money on this, I'd have a tough time not calling it a flop.

I'll be waiting until it's on Disney Plus. I can't get anyone I know to go see it with me as they refuse to see it (no, they're not asian).

Excuse you. From my "ilk"? The person I was talking to has been terrorizing this thread for weeks and weeks trashing the film in every possible way. It has become pretty outrageous behavior. And you are defending it.

I’ll just let this rest. When someone results to personal insults it means their argument is out of gas.

I understand that you have some type of attachment to this film and I think that’s fine.

I have a great deal of respect for you Buddy I do see how it can aggravating that I am seemingly dancing on this movies grave.

It’s just I can’t help but respond back when I post the actual facts and numbers and then someone wants to argue the complete opposite.

I would be happy to continue a fact based discussion with you however if we can’t do that without name calling and de-railing the thread then I would just prefer to drop it.

Again I have a great deal of respect for you and your opinion, I am overjoyed that you like this movie. I hope it does make a Billion and makes me look like an idiot. Halle deserved better with her performance.

I don't care what some random YouTuber is saying. The film has been enthusiastically received by audiences and is doing well at the (US) box office. Yes, it's underperforming internationally, but calling it a "complete failure" on that basis seems more than a little tendentious to me.
