Disney's Live Action The Little Mermaid

We're not using any rules because we know the marketing number.

You're using the 0.5 incorrectly. 0.5 is because the exhibitors (i.e. the theaters) keep half of the box office money. It's not how much you need to cover marketing costs.

Do your math in reverse and it's obvious why it doesn't work.

A box office of $650 million would return about $325 million to Disney. $325 million when you spent $400 million isn't breaking even.

Oh, I see my mistake. Yikes, so I wonder if they really spent more than double on marketing this movie that a normal movie would spend, or if that rule is kind of outdated.

If you're not satisfied with the vagaries of the math of it all, then you're welcome to ignore all of it.
Actually, it's very entertaining!

"In what looks like one of the biggest announcements at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, Disney Branded Television has greenlit a new animated series for preschoolers, “Disney Junior’s Ariel,” inspired by the hugely popular story of “The Little Mermaid.”

The announcement is set to be made today by Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, during the Annecy Animation Festival, at a new project and sneak peak picked presentation across the upcoming slate of Disney Branded Television and Disney EMEA titles.

The new series follows a young Ariel and features fan-favorite characters, including King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian and Flounder, as well as exciting new additions. “Disney Junior’s Ariel” is set to debut on Disney platforms worldwide in 2024."

The media take was 2x production budget plus marketing…
That’s $640…

But Pengs is saying half marketing…so that’s $570

It’s not gonna make either
That’s the sad reality, whether it loses $50 million or $250 million does it really matter at this point? (To us that is, I’m sure to Disney it matters a lot).

It was predicted to make a billion, it will be lucky to make half that, Disney needs to go back to the drawing board, literally.

I'd just like to thank everyone here for doing all the math on this. I hate math. :)

For now, it does seem the best case scenario is that Mermaid breaks even at $570 Million globally, but perhaps a more conservative scenario is that it doesn't break even until $700 Million globally.

As has been said here, based on its current trajectory domestically and overseas it's not going to hit $570 Million. So the story to watch by the end of the month is just how much money it lost. Which should make Elemental's box office tale even more of a nail biter for Burbank.

You can go ahead and throw that one on the long list of reality that people will dispute because someone in a nametag won’t admit it.

We aren’t allowed to use common sense.
