Disney's Live Action The Little Mermaid

Thoughts on the removal of Vanessa’s Song from this film? I found that disappointing as well. I was looking forward to hearing Halle’s take on it.
I honestly hadn’t noticed its removal until you just pointed it out, which is weird because that scene has always been a favourite of mine. It’s a fun little song, and I’m surprised they cut it.

I also noticed that the live action is clearly set up to show that Ariel hasn’t broken the surface before she goes to see Eric’s ship (whereas from the beginning of the animated, she’s above water chatting with scuttle). The change of bird species for scuttle makes it possible for scuttle to come to her rather than her go to scuttle. she clearly pushes her father’s rules, in going to the shipwrecks and collecting the artifacts, but isnt consistently ignoring his rule of breaking the surface. It gives more meaning to her choice to break the surface to see the ship, imo.
You’re right, the shipwreck is the very first time she reaches the surface. I didn’t realize the differences between Ariel and the surface until this post. Her facial expressions and hesitation when she sees the colors of the fireworks and contemplates going up make more sense. In the animated version, she wonders what’s going on, but doesn’t think twice about swimming up because she’s already done just that so many times.

Thank you for pointing that out.

It’s one of my favorite scenes, too. Once again, nothing lol.

I was also hoping they’d include Scuttle squawking directly into Vanessa’s ear. It’s one of the funniest parts in the movie, in my opinion.

"The soundtrack to the new live action The Little Mermaid film jumps 4-1 on Billboard’s Soundtracks chart (dated June 10), while also surging 103-21 on the overall Billboard 200 chart. On the latter tally, the new set swims past the peak of the original soundtrack to the 1989 animated The Little Mermaid, which topped out at No. 32 in 1990.

The new album earned 22,000 equivalent album units in the United States in the week ending June 1 (up 174%), according to Luminate."

This article from May had predicted Mermaid would be the number one grossing film of the summer with $1b. It also had Indy 5 at number two with $950m, and Elemental with $600m.

And didn’t have Spiderverse on the list at all.

Which is to say, this was expected to be a big summer for Disney, and it’s not playing out the way they hoped. Someone needs to do a massive reimagining of their feature film plans. Frozen 3, Zootopia 2, Moana, etc. are all diminishing returns. Disney has totally lost the plot.

I agree with you on Moana and Zootopia 2.

Frozen 3, though, I think they’ll be fine. Frozen 2 was the rare instance where the sequel was as good as the original, and if kept with the thanksgiving release schedule the previous 2 have had would likely do very very well.

(For my bias, IMO, Frozen 2’s soundtrack is better than the original’s, so if that composing team continues to improve I think it bodes well for a 3rd movie).

These are the scores received by the film before it was even released, so all they tell us is that a bunch of people who haven't actually watched the film are opposed to it (sound familiar?).

At any rate, I hope it does better in Japan than it has elsewhere outside the US.

He is Broadway royalty, and he was nominated for the Oscar for his direction of Chicago. But you just want to be negative about everything.
And that matters to Disney how, exactly?

Fact: they were disappointed with poppins and cancelled planned further films
Fact: Tentpole mermaid is in danger of being a write down…small writedown…but a decent chance.

You want to blame Miranda instead?

I made no predictions one way or the other. I merely pointed out that the scores aren’t based on actual viewings of the film.
Fair…

I don’t think Japan is gonna move the dial much at this point.

The movie will make its last stand in the NA box office in the next 60 hours. As far as the business goes.

We do seem to have some disagreement over whether that matters here…but I dont doubt what Burbank is looking at?

I’m just posting here as a fan of the film, not an economic analyst or shareholder.

It also says a lot about those leaving a review that they would one-star it.

One stars are for disasters. TLM is no disaster. Since it hews so closely to the original, that's like saying the original is a disaster.
