I only went back one time, to bury my Dad at Arlington National. He was a Navy PBY pilot back in WWII. Glad you got out of there.

There used to be an indoor amusment park near Chicago. It was called old Chicago and I think it was America themed... anyway, you could actually see it behind my old house (before I was born)... it died.... but take the indoor concept and apply that to America. Or it could be like Tokyo Disney with the indoor part...

I would love it to be in Chicago though. Plus, there is an empty Air field just waiting to be filled...

living right down the street from where they were going to build it. Its not going to happen like they decided 10 years ago. The land in Fauqier County has already been developed into huge shopping center. And the park would of been no where near i-95. It would of been off of 66.

Its so funny to see people complain about things they have no idea about. (Prince William County, i-95...)

Uh, Last i checked i still have VA Plates on my Car and a PWC personal property tax sticker on my car, so I'm more than happy to complain. Thats why i left :D

I'm just never going back.

Although i find it amusing that people who have no idea what theyre talking about suddenly come out of nowhere on the issue....

I know a lot about GWU. For example did you know:

GWU's Marvin Center is named after the segregationist president of the university from 1927 to 1959, Cloyd Heck Marvin. In 1938 he declared that "students of any race or color perform their best" in a "homogenous group, and the University, in its tradition and social environment, has long preserved this policy." He also made clear that "The George Washington University does not register colored students."

No I didn't know that. They must have left that one out of the brochure!

People began to question those of us from NoVa and our knowledge of the subject matter. Like i said before, check the washington post arcives if you want to see the intimate details of what happened. Long Story Short, it had the life span of a squirrel trying to cross I-95.

I meant what happened to this thread. I actually have an idea that someone likes and sparks some interesting conversation, and it turns to talk of traffic. That's why I asked what the heck happened.

Sorry, those of us who actually lived though it are pretty bitter. Hearing headlines of a park being built near our house and then having it all killed by propaganda and county commissioners who secretly get kickbacks from developers who build houses on every parcel of land between the Shenandoah and the Potomac. Thankfully Ed Wilbourne was voted out of office and its slowly comming to light that he's recieved quite a few contributions from development companies. He's the (former) longstanding county represenative whom represents the land where the park would have been built. He's also a total slimeball.

The original question was what happened to the proposal and if it would ever be built. It was answered and a bunch of us know the area waaaaaay too well and are comparing notes. Frankly Im wondering if Fantasyland this week would look anything like 66 & 123 during rush hour, ya know 8 lanes of stopped traffic and sheer pandemonium on a nightly basis?

If you have you ideas as to what Disney's America should be, theres a bunch of threads in the "Imagineer" forum. Thats more a basis for a discussion of your proposed ideas. We're not discounting them, its just that personally i have no desire to rehash the issue.

The reason DA wasnt built in Haymarket had nothing to do with it's attractions but everything to do with Politics.

Hey! Good news! I just left Herndon for Albany, NY!!! It is so much better up here (except for the fact that there was no summer this year, and everyone knows my grandparents)! Unfortunately, I was supposed to be going to TJ this year, and now I'm going to the school that produced the current mayor of New Paltz, NY. :fork: But it isn't Virginia!

I read ME's autobiography several months ago (published in 1997) and he talked all about how they thought they had the green light for Disney's America, but then some anti-Disney activists got all hot and bothered about what a disgrace it would be to turn American history into a theme park, blah blah blah. Even though the governor and lots of people at high levels in the state were in favor of the project, it got so much bad press that they pulled the idea. I wonder how the people who were opposed to Disney building on land next to Civil War sites feel now that they've got strip malls instead??

And the reason Virginia was chosen is because Washington DC is such a popular tourist destination already. I got the feeling from reading the book that Disney's America would have been much more of a World Showcase type park than a ride-based park.
