Disneyland's Autopia Being Demolished? Does this mean Speedway Stays?

Yeah ... that doesn't sound right at all or make sense. They spent ridiculous amount to bring them back and John Lasseter was heavily involved. They have a tremendous amount of real estate to work with for the new E-Ticket with Innoventions, Red Rockett's Pizza Port, The Magic Eye Theater ... hell, even all that Peoplemover track too.
I just don't see them needing that MUCH space. They aren't spending $500 million here, right?:)

That's a lot of space...

You guys are killing me!

Very difficult to believe but I can't say I remember for sure. Perhaps you could supply some evidence.

I didn't believe it either at first. I don't know how to post pictures here. Just find a very detailed map of Disneyland and you'll see just how much space Autopia takes up.

I would be surprised about the subs going, but remember that Al reports on information that is leaked by sources inside of WDC. I have learned to trust him over the years (and have become a very big fan), but not everything that he reports happens because decisions change. The fact that there are discussions occuring is very interesting though. The piece that struck home for me was the incredibly large cost to maintain the projectors, and the incredibly low Guests Per Hour that the subs can crank through. At some point (even if it isn't now) the subs may be on the chopping block simply due to cost vs. benefit. For now, I suspect they are safe.

Screamscape reported over the past couple days that Tomorrowland in Disneyland is slated to be their next major expansion project. In order for this to happen, two attractions are slated to close: Innoventions and Autopia, which is their nicer version of Tomorrowland Speedway. Because of the trend on if an attraction closes on one coast, the other keeps it, do you all think this means we are stuck with Speedway? I really hope not. Innoventions was kinda an Epcot thing from the start, but Speedway needs to go!

I work at disneyland april 2014 autopia will be gone and my friend works for disney imagineering he said a huge star wars theme ride will be built in innoventions they just put up iron man and now nov 1st thor is coming out so innoventions is going to change to marvel. It is going to take 2 years for the star wars ride so 2016 april it will be finished why star wars #1 disney took a guest questinaire many people voted star wars ride #2 all the new star wars movies are coming out 2015 and 2016 :)

Sorry if I reposted twice but in april 2014 they will start taking down autopia to make room for a 2 year long project a star wars ride it will be completed 2016 april I work at disneyland and my friend for disney imagineering he told me this innoventions is converting to marvel second floor they have iron man they are doing construction in innoventions thor will open nov 1st 2013 innoventions is staying why star wars #1 disney took a survey people picked star wars ride #2 the movies are coming out one in 2015 and the next one 2016 this information is not fake its real information from 2 workers also the nemo subs are going to but not for awhile #1 its to much money to keep up they clean the water every night #2 they have 2 divers or more depending on problem fixing and maintaining all the animatronics under water plus maintaining the subs plus it takes 12 workers to operate that ride total cost yearly to operate 200 million + so yes thats next after the autopia project

I'm curious to know what our insiders say on the subs as well... I'll be VERY disappointed if they're removed... I dare say that the subs provide as much magic as any other attraction out there... HM and PotC included.

Agree.
I love the Subs, regardless of the Nemo overlay....and that is coming from someone who is not at all a Nemo fan.
Captain Nemo...hell yes.
Nemo the fish? Uh......no thanks.

The subs need to stay at DL.
Both Autopia and WDWs version can both depart if need be...rather WDWs version then DLs...but i will not be overly upset.
The subs though...LEAVE EM ALONE !

Agree.
I would love to see WDW retheme their Speedway. Make it futuristic or something....and avoid a synergy overlay ( NO 'Cars' please in TL!).

I consider the WDW version a eyesore...and both noise and scent polluting.
At least DL's has some nice scenery and is more relaxing.

Of the two, WDW's needs to go.

The Disneyland Autopia is really a gem. The WDW Tomorrowland Speedway (don't even call it a version of Autopia) is a boring waste of space. That being said, I know real estate is at a premium in DL. I'd be OK even with demolishing the DL Autopia if they built a Cars Land Autopia. Cool rockwork and desert scenery with Cars-style character cars would be pretty darn cool.

Your daughter is actually a pretty decent driver for a four year-old. There were only a few times where she couldn't bank the turns, but other than that, it was a pretty smooth ride. J.J. as well!

J.J. was hitting the rail so hard, I think he was trying to find the on-ramp for Harbor Blvd. :hilarious:

Aaww, he wasn't that bad. Haha afterwards, Sydney said she was ready to drive, but J.J. wasn't.

I was able to get a really bad photo of Sydney while we (she) were driving.

I know you like your 'classic' MK icons but the speedway really needs to go. It is noisy, extremely expensive, stinks and probably only allowed to operate because it is grandfathered from certain regulations that would not allow it to be built today as is.

But a Cars based version using different tech at DHS is an entirely different story.

Amen to closing it. We just got back yesterday and everytime I go near the cars I'm baffled that they are allowed to continue to operate. The fumes from them are enough to make you dizzy. Add to that the fact that they are just too slow. I can go to my local pizza/arcade and ride in totally electric go karts that are much faster, ride better and don't stink like a '57 Chevy in need of a tuneup.

Thoughts?
To be honest I even think that people go into Innoventions for the ac !
