Disneyland "Social Clubs"

The Coronavirus has only boosted their business in southern California. The parking lots look like big auto dealerships.

I made the mistake of thinking I'd pop down to South Coast Plaza today at Noon to replace two cocktail glasses that were broken over the holidays (I throw wild parties). Big mistake!

South Coast Plaza was a zoo. The freeway offramp was backed up, the parking lot was jammed. I turned around and went home. I'll go tomorrow when all the OC cubicle drones are at home drinking Cabernet on their Zoom calls.

I know that in the Age of Corona there is no concept of time, but tomorrow Jan 18 is MLK Day. All those "cubicle drones" (such disdain you have) will be off work.

Oh, gosh, you're right! Tomorrow we honor the Reverend Martin Luther King, which is actually something important.

Tuesday it is then. I probably need the extra time to come up with a little shopping list for Crate&Barrel anyway, beyond the two cocktail glasses that were broken in December. I swear, my parties aren't that wild! 😇

I don't have any disdain for cubicle drones. The world needs them. Without cubicle drones, we wouldn't get the latest TPS reports. And that's important! Pour some more Cabernet into that coffee mug, the 3pm Zoom call is about to kick off!

Sorry for my ignorance but was this an actual thing or is it a joke 🤣 I could see locals sneaking drugs in in the past and selling there, but the drawbridge would definitely not be the place to do it.

Sorry in advance to everyone for probably ruining a silly joke by asking for an explanation...

It was something people complained about in the alt.disney.disneyland days of the 90's when APs were super cheap and there was controversy about people using Disneyland as a babysitter. It was a long time ago, so I may be mixing a few different things together. But there were definitely complaints about teens on the drawbridge, goths (including one about them performing a pagan ritual), and drug selling. How much was real, and how much was you typical old people not understanding teens and seeing what they wanted to see, I don't know.

You're right! I I remember correctly, one of the hotspots that always had a gaggle of crummy teens hanging out in the shadows was that bank of payphones on the backside of what is now the Buzz Lightyear building, right across the walkway from the Matterhorn. All those payphones were left over from the days that building was the Bell System pavilion for CircleVision.

Those crummy teens just looked scary and, well, crummy. I have no doubt that they were selling/passing drugs amongst each other and/or using them in the nearby restrooms a few dozen yards up the parade route.
