Disneyland Fantasmic Dragon Engulfed in Flames

The finale pyro and effects are way toned down from what I remember the 2017 show being. Unless I just don't remember right.

This is also a huge win.

Glad to see Mickey’s entrance restored.

Poor Aladdin and Jasmine… haha. A little ballet moment for them.

Added more pyro throughout the Maleficent segment. New pyro with the Old Hag. Added more finale pyro, more in time with music now.

A few Deep Thoughts...
  • Crowd control CM's need to remember they are not the show. That guy in the walkway who did a 5 minute monologue and made it all about him was cringey. If there's safety instruction or show information that need to be communicated, keep it to 15 seconds or less. Otherwise, there's a stand up comedy club in Fullerton for honing your craft.
  • The industrial, white plastic hand sanitizer machine strapped to the themed New Orleans Square lamp post is just dumb.
  • There sure are a lot of Screenz now, aren't there. Show is half over and there's already a lot of previously live action segments that have been replaced by screenz and more screenz. It's like World Of Color North.
  • Nice to see the Peter Pan segment back! And I see the Columbia is now Powered by Evinrude. The show's been down for over a year and they didn't get the Columbia ready to sail on her own power? Dumb.
  • Much of music seems tweaked a bit. So far, it's a good upgrade. Maybe this was stuff from the early 20's, but I can't remember.
  • So the dragon caught on fire, they closed the show for over a year, just so they could... reopen the show without any dragon at all? Make that make sense, please. That easy/cheap option should have been a 60 day closure, tops.
  • Mark Twain finale'... a bunch of Characters are missing. Was it the Bird Flu? Or TDA cutbacks?
This is not an improved show. This is not a plussed up show. This is simply a show that was closed for a year and then brought back in a slimmed down and budget cut version of its previous self. A bunch of live action and human actor/dancer segments are missing. Previous floats are missing, previous stunts and physical props are missing. It's a lazer light show without nearly as many human performers as it used to have.

I give this show a C+. I don't need to make a special trip this summer to see it. That's sad. :(

I noticed that Hook didn’t do his swinging off the stern stunt. It’s definitely still part of the show, because he was ready.

Reopening without a new/improved dragon (the actual logo of the show) is the perfect example of what current Disney management thinks of the rubes who actually pay to go to a theme park.

General thoughts and differences I noticed on my first watch!:
  • Tuxedo Mickey now appears later, where the original cue was before 2.0 update.
  • Less projections and lasers used leading up to Mickey’s new appearance. Guess they didn’t want to redo them.
  • The flowers now stay on stage during Jungle Book segment. Exit about halfway through to audience left side instead of right.
  • The transition from Peter Pan to Aladdin is ehh…needs work.
  • Projections after Columbia changed to feature various princesses and princes. No more Agrabah montage.
  • Aladdin and Jasmine now do a “dance” on stage instead of a magic carpet ride.
  • Old Hag got some new pyro and comets.
  • Mickey now appears on lower edge of stage, as if hiding from Malificient on lift. Runs on stage and gets caught in between Malificient’s blasts of green pyro.
  • The music transition is very noticeable to the distinct dragon music.
  • New fire effects on lower half of stage. Bunch of torches that light up in sync.
  • Malificient’s defeat has some new pyro, comets and mimes.
  • Large decrease in characters on Mark Twain. Down to 24 characters from 30-33.
  • The finale got toned way down.
  • The spotlights on the tower don’t do the 360 spins anymore. Less lasers. Less color overall.
  • The second half of the finale pyro was redone to be similar to the pre-2.0. More in time with the music beats. The first half is still same.
  • Tuxedo Mickey did his laugh at the end, thank goodness! Don’t know why B-roll was showed differently.

Overall, I’m super happy Fantasmic! is back on the west coast! B-mode fight scene with Malificient was pretty cool with Mickey running around avoiding the explosions.

Now some tech issues for the first show.
  • Columbia boat broken. Needed to be pushed by a smaller tug boat in the rear. Due to this they couldn’t do the stunts behind the boat.
  • Mickey’s hand pyro didn’t go off when defeating Malificient.
  • The fountains are not aligned at all. Could barely do a sorcerer hat at the end…

I'm see in the video that there's a change of post-show. Imagination song from defunct TDS version no longer heared at post-show. Instead, the original pre-2017 Fantasmic! exit music appeared twice, before closing announcement in English and Spanish, and after that billingual announcement.

Very subtle change, but I noticed that before the show starts TSI has returned to its original lighting scheme.

It was updated during the 2.0 refresh.

Overall show impression.. You can tell they still needed more time to get the show up and running. There are a few kinks to work out. With that being said, it was so nice seeing it back after the fire incident and can’t wait until we inevitably get a new dragon and get the show to an even better state.

Yes. I imagine more work is on the way once they have a new dragon.

Yes. This is a baffling decision, especially after a closure lasting more than a year.

This is the weakest version of Fantasmic! they've ever had. And it was closed for a year to get that?

This seems to be a glaring problem with the current leadership at the Parks. They just don't care.
