Disneyland Fantasmic Dragon Engulfed in Flames

I think the latter and was just an assumption on the work supposedly happening behind the scenes.

Officially, Disneyland said this today as per Scott Gustin:

The really should just scrap the show. The Peter Pan and dragon segments were the only reason to watch Fantasmic. Now neither of those scenes are present in the show. It'd be a better use of the Rivers of America to have a jazz band playing on the Mark Twain.

A band over a nighttime show with fireworks and great music and a custom-built stage? I respectfully disagree

There's fireworks and music at the castle. These are not compelling enough reasons to log jam the entire west portion of the park.
If Walt Disney World canceled Luminous, their Fantasmic, and the projection show at DHS, replaced them with a band or two, and said "there's fireworks and music at the castle. Those aren't compelling enough reasons to log jam an entire park" would you accept it? DLR has two parks and three nighttime spectacular (when F! is running.) WDW has 4 parks and 5 nighttime spectaculars. That's how it is, that's how it'll stay

I couldn't care less about what WDW does. I barely care about what Disneyland does. I just don't see the value in making Frontierland, Adventureland, and New Orleans Square a mess of people and one-way walkways for a show that's been butchered and mutilated with its grand finale missing. If you desperately want a show, then Disney should create a new show or return Fantasmic to its true form instead of putting out a circumsised production.

Let's stop arguing. All I'm saying is Fantasmic is better than no show at all, and that's the other option. I'm glad it's coming back, even if it does create some pinch points. Besides, crowds already gather for fireworks at RoA, so if it's going to be crowded anyways why not give those crowds another show to watch?

The Grand Finale is the Mark Twain not the Dragon!

Fair, but the dragon is without a doubt the climax. I'm not surprised that the show will reopen without it, but the new finale had better be jaw dropping if it's coming to stay.

EDIT: It seems I need to clarify that this post is entirely referring to the dragon segment of the show.

Or a Tom Sawyer raft…. Like they did this year. Honestly, I did enjoy that as much as Fantasmic and it gave me a great excuse to watch fireworks away from the crowds on Main Street. So there were some positives about no Fantasmic to me personally but I still will be glad to see it again.

I was thinking they could have a large white sheet supported by two long side poles. As a low cost solution, they could blast a bright strobe to darken our vision momentarily and have two staff bring the sheet set onto the stage and pull it wide and tight when it's dark. They drop the poles into two holes in the stage and Disney could hit that sheet with 3 stacked projectors and throw a brite digital "Murphy" on it.

It wont be the best but it would solve the problem and give us back a dragon. It also will keep the cost low. They could even re-purpose the cast behind stage. They could re-asign the Jungle Book dancing barge staff or Pirates stunt staff to be the sheet pole droppers too? This way they dont need to hire dedicated staff for the section.

Could be a really cost effeciant solution?

honestly, i hate to be pessimistic but if it's gonna take a year to bring the show back and it doesn't include the dragon... the dragon isn't coming back. and with how much it cost in 2009, honestly i wouldn't expect today's disney to spend that amount of money on something that can easily be replaced with projections

just to be clear, this isn't my thoughts, this is what i'm sure disney is thinking - if it were up to me they'd have that thing rebuilt already, cost be damned

Ok...I got another! At WDW we got a dragon with sticks and cloth. What if the make a "cloth" dragon with poles...like a big "puppet". The head is one person and the wings are two people. That might even be cheaper and more cost effecient. They wont need to buy more projectors. They can get the cloth and paint from their local art and crafts store and the rest of the hardware from Hone Depot. PVC pipe is pretty low cost. Get the Disney art team to make a light paper mache head with LED lights for eyes.

I think this is a viable and cost effective soltuon that Disney should be able to affrord.

We do it in Hollywood Studios Fantasmic but I think they use a cherry picker for the head and people for the wings. Disneyland can be much smaller because they are building it from scratch.

So do you think we'll hear anything new at the Town Hall on the 28th? They did say they'd share things in the coming weeks

Probably not the place to announce those kind of things even if plans are ready to be announced. More likely it'll be a Disney Parks Blog Post that'll pop up when its ready.

Bob and the presidents (including Josh) of the different divisions of the company are doing a Cast Member/media town hall to discuss the future of the company
I think the "future building opportunities for each segment" doesn't literally mean building with bulldozers, etc. Iger is just going to say the same things again...more franchises for the studios, more IP in the parks, yada yada yada...
