Due to the rain, Disneyland has announced it will close three hours earlier than originally planned. DCA will also close several hours earlier. Disneyland will now close at 8:00PM today, and DCA will close at 6:00PM. They were scheduled to be open late for the MLK Jr. holiday today, but they've gone back to their regular weekday closing time.

It's been raining moderately for a few hours in central Orange County, and Anaheim has received just over 1 inch of rain since Midnight. I live in Villa Park, in the hills about 10 miles due east of Disneyland (with a great view of the Matterhorn and fireworks! ) and my rain gauge says we've had 1.20 inches of rain since it started falling last night.

But that's enough to close Disneyland. I can't imagine what they would do if they got a real Florida downpour!

Which begs the question: Why is this enough to close the parks? Are the California parks less equipped to deal with runoff at a structural level (Florida being famous for its porous surfaces), or is this really as silly as it seems to me? :veryconfu

Remember it "doesn't" rain in SoCal:lol:

But this has happened before back in 05? when ever Monsters Inc opened at DCA. Heavy rain opened with in the morning but kept guests from coming in and the hours were cut by mid afternoon, the rain cleared unfortunately the decision was already in place to cut the hours as well as send CM's home. I think a lot has to do with the attendance.

That was my presumption...the locals are so unaccustomed to it that they just don't want to get out in it, so Disney loses money by keeping the lights on.

I guess the nature of DLR could affect attendance, too. If you're vacationing at WDW, odds are you're going to brave the rain since you've already paid and traveled. If you want to go to DL for the day, you can just wait for one of the 361 days a year it's sunny out.

(So OK...I answered my own question. Kinda.)

The Orange County Register newspaper, in their non-stop coverage of the rain today, has just linked to this dramatic YouTube footage of the heaviest rain and wind moving on shore earlier today in Orange County. A brave resident went out in front of her beach apartment and captured this, to get the message out to the world of exactly the types of conditions we are battling here.

Through the miracle of YouTube, I present to you the raw power of mother nature as she makes trees move and drops measurable precipitation in Orange County during STORMWATCH 2010...

Hey, at least Disneyland and DCA opened today.

Knott's Berry Farm (about 5 miles north of Disneyland) never opened today due to the expected rain. Early this morning it had yet to start raining, but they knew it would rain so they simply stayed closed and kept their employees at home. I assume they've got a sign out at the ticket booths or something that says they are unexpectedly closed today due to inclement weather.

Amazing, yet true.

Wow, maybe all those heading for Knotts will end up at DLR lol. Although a rainy day would make for a great day to go eat at Mrs. Knotts assuming its open.

It's...just...rain. Goodness SoCal. Really? They are such wimps! I say we send everyone out east for a little while. Two years in Colorado has helped me get over freaking out over rain and feeling very cold in 60 degree weather.

I love Disneyland in the rain. Went last Wednesday when it rained in the morning. Everything was a walk on all day. Beautiful.

Around 4:00 PM the rain stopped, and by 4:30 PM the skies were clear.

The sky in Orange County is entirely cloudless this evening and the stars and moon are out. But all of Southern California is huddling in their homes watching the aftermath of the "Big Storm!" on TV, worrying about how bad the next rain might get on Wednesday or Thursday.

Stay tuned, film at 11!

Wow I'm glad I didn't head out to DL last night. We drove an hour through flooded roads and downed trees to South Coast Plaza after lunch yesterday just because we were bored. When we left the mall after dinner, it was absolutely gorgeous outside and I kept saying "let's just go to Disneyland!" I was really wanting to see the fireworks and knew the crowds would be non-existent. My husband had to get up at 3 a.m. this morning for work though so he didn't agree with my DL plan and just drove us home. I had no clue the park closed early and I would have been sorely disappointed had we showed up.

"Sorry, the park is closed. The moose outside should have told ya."
