Burgers are good, fries are terrible. I have said for years that the hype is unwarranted but most of So Cal disagrees :p
Same in the Bay Area. There's a single location in SF. It's a walkup storefront with no drive-thru and yet it always appears to be busy. I've resigned myself to being one of the few people on Earth who doesn't get the In-n-Out thing. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Don't get me started on the mediocracy that is In-n-out.

There are definitely better burgers out there. Umami Burger is great, plus the usual mom n' pop places that are neighborhood favorites.

But I think In-N-Out Burgers and shakes are very good, their fries are mediocre. What sets In-N-Out apart is their menu flexibility, their extreme cleanliness, and their high employee standards (higher than Disneyland when it comes to courtesy, efficiency and good grooming!). Add in a big dollop of SoCal cultural mystique, and it probably is a bit too famous for what it actually is. But it's still very good for the price and the concept.

A couple of months ago I wanted an In-N-Out, but it was packed and the line of cars was backed up onto the street. I was in a hurry, so I drove down the block to a McDonald's. Big mistake! The line was short and it went fast, but everything else was a disaster. The employees were rude and looked like hell, barely grunted out English, and my Big Mac tasted stale and cheap, almost as if it was Soylent Green instead of beef and buns. The fries were good though.

I'll take In-N-Out over any other big burger chain!

One other thing I admire about In-N-Out is that they put giant plate glass windows all along their drive-thru lane, so you can see directly into the kitchen and watch them hustle around making burgers and food.

In-N-Out are so confident about the cleanliness and efficiency of their operation and the high standards of their employees, they want you to see even the mysterious kitchen part that all other burger chains wisely hide from view.

But yeah, their fries are mediocre.

I’m one of those weirdos who actually prefer their fries to be a bit undercooked, so ordering them as “light” and then Animal Style, has been my preferred method for as long as I can remember.

And when I get them home and apply a good amount of Sriracha...

😋😋😋😋😋

People crap on In & Out but I think they always over-deliver for their price. They're consistent & I can get a double burger, fries & a drink for about $8.95 in California which I think is pretty amazing. Burger King & Carl's Jr (both I don't care for) cost more & I always end up spending $12-$15 at the Habit & or 5 Guys.

There is something that reminds me my of my childhood when I have a simple little Mickey D's burger and fries...they are still my favorite fries BTW.

If you want a great burger and fries, Hodads in the SD area is our favorite. I'd also suggest Farmer Boys locally...small chain but still pretty good.

This makes me curious. If you had to get a burger from a place with a drive through, which would it be?
That's a tough one for me to answer since I live in the heart of SF and don't own a car. Drive-thrus don't really exist here. Generally I'm not a big fan of fast food chains, however if Super Duper Burgers had drive-thrus it'd be my first choice.

Slater's 50/50 anyone??

If I have the time to stop and eat in an actual restaurant, that's my go-to for burgers.
One day I plan to get myself to The Counter and Father's Office.

Also, I've never eaten at an Umami Burger. Are they worth the hype?

Slaters was good, the beef and bacon burger is very heavy though. We had a friend that was a manager of a slaters in Rancho Cucamunga so we got to eat free. BurgerIM is reasonably good as well.

No doubt they are a good value. That being said, I prefer Habit and don't have any issues spending more.
