Trip Report Disneyland by way of Alaska

Hello everybody. Let me start out by saying that I have been a member of the boards for many years and post occasionally but have never written a trip report (gasp, I know!). I never seem to find the time to write it. But I have read and benefitted from so many wonderful trip reports over the years that I felt I needed to write one, especially for this trip of a lifetime. Warning before you start reading – this will be a very long trip report since our trip was 2 weeks (actually 16 days total) and may take me a while to complete. I will add pictures in as I go but some of my pictures may not be the best quality.

Ok, now for the introductions. There is me, Kris, self-proclaimed Disney fanatic and mother to a wonderful daughter.
Picture1.jpg

And my wonderful daughter, Shallon, who is 24 and was born and raised under my Disney fascination and I think she may be even passing me up with her Disney obsession.
Picture 2 .jpg

We are true Disney buddies. By the way, a few weeks before we left Shallon broke her foot bike riding so she is in a boot cast. It could have been a lot worse and she seemed to be moving around pretty well, although I did refer to her a couple times on the trip as hop-along-Shallon.

We have been to Disney World many times and go twice a year and usually spend a couple weeks each trip. We have been WDW Annual Passholders for quite a few years and really get our money’s worth out of those passes. A few years ago, a fellow board member and helpful planner turned me on to Disney Cruise Line. We had never cruised before and once I took the leap I was so hooked there is no turning back. So I blame (or thank) my helpful planner friend who I will refer to as “she who must not be named”. Now we have taken 5 cruises in the past 4 years which is quite a feat because I never thought I’d be able to swing taking a cruise in the first place. I have learned so much about cruising from the boards and from the trip reports that have helped me prepare in immeasurable ways. In addition, “she who must not be named” has answered so many questions for me over the years that I couldn’t have done it without her, plus she has the best trip reports ever. For those who have cruised with Disney, you probably know how addicting it can be. We have cruised on the Dream 3 times, Fantasy-Eastern Caribbean 1 time and most recently we cruised on the Wonder to Alaska. Now Alaska has always been a dream of mine since I was very little and what better way to experience Alaska than on a Disney cruise.

So once I decided to take the Alaska plunge, I figured we might as well go to Disneyland too. Since we live in Michigan and would be going all the way over to “that side of the country” we may as well go down to California too and experience our very first visit to Disneyland (makes perfect sense, right). So we spent a week cruising Alaska and a week in Disneyland, after all I didn’t know when we’d make it way over there again. This really was a trip of a lifetime. I planned the cruise 1 ½ years in advance so I had plenty of time to learn more. This was also a surprise for Shallon so as the trip got closer it became more difficult to pull things together without her knowing. Shallon has Down syndrome and is very much a kid at heart, which means I have the advantage of experiencing Disney life through the eyes of a child over and over, even though she is 24. But this is also why I can’t tell her too far in advance because she just can’t stand to wait for the next Disney fix (who can). For a seasoned WDW vet who can plan a trip there with my eyes closed, I was completely out of my comfort zone. This was a trip of firsts…. first time in Vancouver, first time on the Wonder, first time in Alaska, and first time to Disneyland. I sure did a lot of homework before this trip, thanks to all the trip reports. Even though I was very excited about this trip, there was also something completely terrifying about it. But the very things that made this trip scary were the same things that made it fantastic, discovering new territory. So let’s get started.

But the most spectacular thing of all is one whale jumped out of the water, spun around and splashed back in. We found out this is called breaching which is when the whale has at least ¾ of his body out of the water. This one was 100% out of the water and one of our guides said that’s pretty rare to be all the way out of the water like that.

Picture 6.jpg

What a treat to see and very glad I had the video camera running at the time. Packs of whales kept coming to this spot, it was so awesome. Then we saw a bald eagle fly right in front of the boat, then dive down to the water to grab a fish. The captain said that while this is a very common occurrence, it’s usually not so close that you can actually see what kind of fish he got.

Heading back in, we passed one of the glaciers called Eagle Glacier. The sky had cleared up quite a bit so the captain stopped for a nice photo-op. There was a tall rock right in front of the glacier and right on the tip of that rock lands an eagle. You know it’s a great photo-op when the captain pulls out his own camera and opens his window to take a shot of the eagle in front of Eagle Glacier. This was a fantastic trip.

Back at the dock the bus was waiting to take us back to the pier. Since we had only 30 minutes until sail away time (the excursion ran over), we had no time to go to town. We still haven’t made it into any of the port towns yet, but that’s not why we came to Alaska anyway. We were planning on hitting town with our original 2 ½ tour with the floatplane. But this tour was about 5 ½ hours. Back on the ship the first Pixar Pals was going on in the lobby but it was already in full swing and very crowded so we couldn’t even weasel our way in. The other one was taking place around 10:30pm. Don’t think we’ll make that one either. We went and got ready for dinner which was in Animator’s Palate tonight. It was nice to re-cap all of the excursions of the day with fellow table mates, especially since we weren’t at dinner the night before. Some of our table mates took helicopters to the top of the glacier, went kayaking, bear watching at the salmon ladder, etc. It was great to hear about everyone’s adventures. Tonight’s show was Toy Story-the Musical. I was so excited for this show since I love Toy Story and had never seen this show before. But I was really disappointed; it just wasn’t up to par with the other Disney stage shows. It just didn’t have that exciting get-up-and-go feel about it. Half the audience fell asleep during the show. I was surprised by this, but maybe we just hit it on a bad night or maybe it’s just me.

Day 7 – Saturday, September 6-Ketchikan
Today was a later port arrival day in Ketchikan around 11:15. We had breakfast at Beach Blanket Buffet and I had Mickey Waffles with strawberries on top, yum. The captain let us know that Ketchikan is the rain capital of the U.S. getting more rain per year than any other area, but it looked pretty nice out there today. After breakfast we grabbed pictures with Russell and Doug and then went to Guest Services for a printout of our account.

Picture_1.JPG

I wanted to make sure we got a credit for our cancelled excursion as well as all the gift cards I gave them getting posted. All was well. We watched the ship dock and watched the guys shoot the ropes off the ship to the guys down on the dock to tie us up. It was cool to watch.

Picture_2.JPG

In Ketchikan, you dock literally right next to downtown so no shuttle to get there, just step off the ship and there you are.

Picture_3.JPG

We had less than an hour in town before we had to come back to the ship to check in for our excursion. So we quickly headed out and grabbed a few cheap Alaskan souvenirs.

Our excursion today was the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour which was on one of those crab fishing boats like they have on the Deadliest Catch. Matter of fact, the boat we were going on, the Aleutian Ballad, was on Season 2 of the Deadliest Catch.

Picture_6.JPG

After our excursion group checked in we walked through town to the pier where the Aleutian Ballad was docked. This was a double decker boat with rows of seats on both decks.

Picture_7.JPG

Picture_8.JPG

We did not have a full tour today so there was plenty of space and everyone opted to sit on the lower level closer to our guides. That had an aquarium onboard which came in handy for viewing some creatures they pulled in later.

Picture_9.JPG

They started out by telling stories about the history of the ship, like the two times before that the boat had major accidents and sank. But they recouped the boat both times, dragged it in and fixed it up and sent it on its way again.

They sailed out and baited and dropped lines teaching us about all the steps as they did everything.

Picture_10.JPG

We sailed to another spot and pulled in some small crab pots with a bunch of box crabs in them.

Picture_11.jpg

Picture_12.jpg

These crabs were about the size of paper plates and they let everyone who wanted hold these.

Picture_13.jpg

Picture_14.jpg

Of course Shallon jumped and the chance, she is very adventurous and fearless.

We sailed a bit more and stop to watch a whale for a moment but this couldn’t compare to the whale watching the day before. They went to a rocky point where eagles hang out and there were several there. The guys threw a few fish out near the boat and the eagles swooped in real close and snatched them out of the water. Nice close up views of them.

Picture_16.jpg

Picture_17.jpg

We sailed to another spot and pulled up prawn pots (prawns are like giant shrimp) and this haul also included prawns and sea stars.

Picture_18.jpg

Picture_19.jpg

The giant sea star and giant octopus they put in the aquarium on deck.

Picture_20.jpg

Picture_21.jpg

They let people hold the smaller sea stars and the prawns which Shallon again jumped at the opportunity.

Picture_22.jpg

Picture_23.jpg

The sea stars were really slimy and their tiny tentacles were constantly wiggling.

One of the guys pulled the octopus out of the aquarium and showed it off to everyone.

Picture_24.jpg

Picture_25.jpg

At the next spot, they hauled up the king crab pots like they show on the Deadliest Catch.

Picture_26.jpg

Picture_27.jpg

These crabs were very big but we didn’t get to hold these ones.

Picture_28.jpg

I guess they used to let people hold them but there were too many injuries. I can see why; these crabs have big pointy spikes on their backs and big pinchers.

Picture_29.JPG

The guides taught us a lot about all the creatures they fish for and about their adventures in the Bering Sea.

Picture_30.JPG

As we sailed back in we took a picture of the Wonder when we passed it.

Picture_31.JPG

Picture_32.JPG

This was a fabulous experience and I’d highly recommend it to others.

On the walk back to the ship I had to take a picture of a floatplane because that’s as close as we’d get on this trip.

Picture_33.JPG

Saw this on the ship as we walked up which I’ve never noticed before; gotta love those Disney details.

Picture_34.JPG

We got back on the ship and met some more characters (Mike, Sulley, Mr. Incredible and Woody).

Picture_35.JPG

Picture_36.JPG

Picture_37.JPG

Picture_38.JPG

We even got pulled into Studios Sea for an impromptu meeting with Anna & Elsa again. I guess they had no one in there to meet with them so they were pulling people in off the street (I mean ship). As we were heading back to our room we saw Bo Peep in the wild. We’ve never seen her before so this was a special chance with a rare character.

Picture_39.JPG

We stayed in our room and ordered room service for dinner and watched movies on TV. It was another wonderful day.

Day 8 – Sunday, September 7-At Sea Day
Today was a day at sea which was welcomed after 3 busy and active port days. We had brunch scheduled at Palo at 11:00. If you have never had the Palo brunch on a Disney cruise, do it. It is the best. Of course this was another recommendation from my friend, “she who must not be named” and another thing I got hooked on. There are so many selections. First of all, there are a bunch of separate tables with buffet items ranging from bread and spreads, seafood, meats and cheeses, muffins & sweet rolls, of course desserts.

Picture_40.JPG

Picture_41.JPG

Picture_42.JPG

They had these warm sticky buns that were so good I could have made a meal with them.

Picture_43.JPG

Picture_44.JPG

And don’t even get me started on the desserts (can you tell I have a sweet tooth).

Picture_45.JPG

Picture_46.JPG

You are free to visit these tables as often as you’d like, which we did. But that’s not all; there are also main courses to be ordered of which I had the best chicken parmesan that I’ve ever eaten. Shallon got lasagna and we also shared a sausage flatbread, again this is in addition to all those other tables full of food. This picture only shows one end of the main courses and I didn’t get a picture of the other end because groups of folks were coming up to make their selections. I didn’t want to invade their space with a camera.
Picture_47.JPG

These are the only food pictures I took the whole cruise because I wanted to show my sister who I’m taking with me on her first cruise next year. At the beginning, you are also offered a complimentary mimosa or sparkling apple cider. I got the mimosa and Shallon got the sparkling cider which they brought to her in a wine glass just like all the other alcoholic drinks. She was feeling pretty good about this. The service in Palo is also the best and you never feel rushed, you can stay as long as you want and eat, eat, eat. This meal is so awesome and we were so stuffed I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to eat anything else the whole day.

We went back to the room and threw in a load of laundry so we could have all clean stuff before disembarking the ship for our next adventure. While the clothes were in the washer, we changed into swimsuits and quickly headed up for a dip in the hot tub. After all, we couldn’t be on a Disney cruise without going in the water at least once, even if it was cool outside. So we got up on deck to the adults pool area and grabbed a couple towels and some fleece blankets which would be handy upon exiting the hot tub. The water was so warm, it felt great and I could have stayed there for hours.

Picture_48.JPG

Shallon decided after a bit that she needed to try out the swimming pool.

Picture_49.JPG

Was she crazy (I think so)? But she seemed to love it and apparently it wasn’t too cold, but I wasn’t leaving my cozy spot in the hot tub. Eventually we did have to leave so we could go change the laundry. We got out and wrapped in our fleece blankets right away which was a very nice touch in the chilly air. We got back to the room and changed into dry, warm clothes and went down to switch the laundry. I started packing the suitcases so I didn’t have to worry about it later that evening. Now I was back to having to make sure they both were not overweight for our flight the next day. But we did purchase stuff, plus they were overweight to start with so I knew we’d be carrying more with us.

We then decided to try out the final “big jackpot” bingo to see if we could pay off our trip with the big win. Well, we didn’t win but it was fun anyway. Today’s jackpot was $4200 and was won by a little old lady and I was so happy for her. They always have lots of giveaways at the bingo sessions like DCL or DVC bags full of stuff but we didn’t win that either. The weather out today was very bright and sunny and made the “at sea” day so pleasant and relaxing. Well ice cream before dinner was up next and we thought that would be a good appetizer. Dinner tonight was in Triton’s which was out first night there since we had to skip the last time there for late excursions. All our tablemates were there and we had a great time reminiscing about the voyage and all of the adventures. I told them that this is the most educational vacation that I’ve ever had. I learned so much on this cruise. Between the Alaskan naturalist onboard and all of the excursions we took, I learned so much about the wildlife, dog sledding, the glaciers, the land, the gold rush, the people, and the Alaskan way of life through the generations. It was all so amazing and it is truly a different world up here. And of course I topped off the meal with a Mickey bar, after all I hadn’t had one yet on the cruise. I don’t know why I don’t take more advantage of “all you can eat Mickey bars” on the cruise.

Picture_50.JPG

Tonight’s show was Dreams which was fabulous and a great send-off at the end of the wonderful cruise. After the show we finished packing the suitcases and put them outside of the room to be taken away. This was sad to be closing up this chapter of our adventure on this most awesome cruise itinerary. But not too sad because tomorrow we were flying to Disneyland for a week. Slept good again!

Day 9 – Monday, September 8-Disembarking DCL
We went to our scheduled early breakfast this morning at Triton’s because we wanted to say our farewells to our great tablemates. We had such a good time together and laughed so much on this cruise. Usually we go to the buffet for breakfast on the last morning because we don’t want to get up so early to be at breakfast at 6:45. But we got up early today. I took a quick walk out to the secret deck and snapped a couple shots of sailing back into Vancouver. Crappy picture of Lion’s Gate Bridge but we were at dinner when we passed it before due to the extremely delayed sailing.

We were in no hurry as our flight wasn’t until 1:40. After a while we disembarked the ship with that same look that we saw the others wearing a week ago when they disembarked. It was a very easy and quick process getting off the ship and through customs. I’m sure this would be appreciated by those who had to wait so long to get on the ship last week. In less than 10 minutes we were getting into our cab and heading for the Vancouver airport.

At the airport we checked in and ditched our luggage. Now we had about 3 ½ hours until our flight so we kicked back for a while and then had some lunch.

Vancouver has a nice airport.

We had a very smooth flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles and when we got off the plane we got our luggage right away. Everything was going like clockwork today. I had booked the Super Shuttle for our trip from the airport to Anaheim. Super Shuttle, you know those handy blue vans you always see at the airport that are so reliable and run every 15 minutes or so. We went outside to the curb to check in for our scheduled shuttle only to find out that they had gone on strike this morning. Seriously, the day we fly into LAX for our first trip ever to Disneyland and the shuttle service decides to strike today. So we were told that a skeleton crew was working and transporting folks but they had no possible way to give us a time frame on how long we would wait, only that the last folks waited about 50 minutes. Well I had scheduled our shuttle to be there when we were ready but what could we do, I guess 50 minutes wasn’t that bad considering the situation. So we waited…… and waited and waited and waited. Finally after about 1 ½ hours a shuttle came for us but then he drove around the airport for another half hour trying to fill the last one seat in the van. Really, let’s just go.

Now we would be staying at a condo for the first 5 nights about a mile away from Disneyland which I booked through my timeshare. Since we wouldn’t have a car while we were there I ordered groceries to be delivered to the condo tonight so we would have breakfast items and snacks during our stay there. Well I scheduled the grocery delivery for between 7:00 and 8:00 because that would be plenty of time to get there from a 4:00 arrival, right? Wrong, it was still over an hour until we got there because everyone else got dropped off first. It was after 7:00 and we were still in the shuttle so I dug up the phone # for the grocery service to check on our delivery which could be there any minute, even though we weren’t. When I made the order it was stated that you have to be there for the delivery or they will return it to the store. So I’m on hold with Customer Service for about 10 minutes when I get another incoming call which is the delivery driver who is at our condo with our groceries. I told him we were still 10-15 minutes away and he asked if I wanted him to leave it with the front desk. Yes, of course, thank you, thank you, thank you.

So all was well with the grocery delivery and we did arrive about 15 minutes later, which was now 7:30 (3 ½ hours after our plane landed) UGH! We got checked in and hauled our luggage and groceries up to our room. We were tired and hungry but all of our groceries were just breakfast and snack foods so we walked two doors down to the 7-11 and bought a couple hotdogs and took them back for dinner. Now our condo was Peacock Suites which was on Anaheim Blvd, one mile from the parks. They were part of the ART (Anaheim Resort Transportation) which has a bus line going from the resorts to the parks and back. Our route only had 2 stops and then the parks so it was pretty convenient. We bought our bus passes at a kiosk at the condo so it was very easy. The transportation worked out great although it was pretty crowded a few nights after fireworks/park close but not any worse than at WDW. I don’t know what it is about travel days but we were really tired and slept so solid that night.

Finally reading! :)

$600 to change flights? Good gravy! I’ve never seen it that high!

No way to the Grouse Grind. No way!!

I love those bear pictures! And Canada Place pictures!

The Wonder is the last to have the secret deck! I suspect it won’t be there long!

I didn’t hear about people waiting that long to board! That’s crazy! I would have been so sad!

The picture of Shallon and Olaf in bed is adorable!

Your navigator’s verandah was perfect for Tracy Arm! I loved that day so much!

Excellent glacier pictures! And oh my word, so many sea lions!!

Oh the puppies. We loved the puppies too!

Great character pictures! And whale pictures! That one really was out of the water!

My word Shallon is brave! She was holding everything!

Bo Peep!! In the wild! That’s crazy!

Palo brunch is absolutely the best meal onboard.

Excellent report so far! Can't wait for Disneyland! :)

Day 10 – Tuesday, September 9-First day at Disneyland
Now feeling very well rested and settled in, we got up excited for our first day (ever) at Disneyland. We had a leisurely breakfast in the condo and headed out to the bus stop right outside to catch the 8:20 bus to the parks. Yay, the Disneyland sign. It's real, we're here!

Picture_1.JPG

We had purchased 5-day park hopper tickets so we could take advantage of as much as possible during our weeklong visit here. Since it was low season the parks didn’t open until 10:00 (really that’s like mid-afternoon to a WDW vet) but we were going to take advantage of our one Magic Morning that comes with the park hopper purchase to get into Disneyland at 9:00 today.

We headed over early because we had some business to take care of before entering the park.
Picture_2.JPG

We had to turn our ticket voucher into real tickets which we did pretty quickly. Also we needed to pick up PhotoPass+ card which I purchased after reading @sweetpee_1993 trip report from her DL trip. We normally wouldn’t get a PhotoPass in WDW partially due to cost and we’ve been there so often. But this DL trip would be our first and the PhotoPass+ (including CD of all your photos plus a bunch of stock photos around DL) was only $69.95. I knew we would make sure we got our money’s worth. So because the Main St. Photo Shop was closed for refurb, we had to get our PhotoPass card at the stroller rental counter. So we headed over there and got in line which was pretty short. After a few moments we stepped up and were then directed over to another counter a few over which was the Photo counter. After waiting there, we find out that the Photo counter doesn’t open up until 10:00, the regular park opening time. This was our first of many encounters in which I found California Cast Members very different than Florida in the way they cared (or didn’t care) about the guest. So we just got a PhotoPass card at our first attraction photo and had it added to the PhotoPass+ which we had to get later.

We headed over to get into line to get into the park and noticed they were decked out in Halloween décor.

Picture_3.JPG

The line moved very quickly but I thought it weird that they scan your tickets twice, once with a handheld scanner to make sure your picture matches and then another time at the turnstile to get into park. I can’t imagine how they do this during real busy times.

Picture_4.JPG

I had set up touring plans which I never do in Florida but wanted to get the most out of this trip to the foreign land. I did a lot of homework and planning for this trip but I was completely out of my comfort zone as a newbie and not knowing the lay of the land. I did get a lot of help and advice from “she who must not be named” including maps I could actually read and lots of helpful hints for a first timer. I am really a Walt Disney history buff so I was very excited about being in and exploring Walt’s original park. When I stepped inside I was in complete awe, it was so beautiful. And I imagined Walt walking these very streets. I looked up at the Fire Station with the lantern in the window and thought about him sitting up there watching all the happy faces down below in this world of excitement he created.

Picture_5.JPG

I had actually booked the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps tour because I wanted to tour his apartment. But right after I booked it, I read that they were closing down the apartment for a bit due to a backstage refurb. Now I know that I would enjoy the remainder of the tour but the apartment was really the drawing force for taking this. So I called before we left and cancelled and got our money back. Well I had to leave something for my next visit.
