Trip Report Disneyland by way of Alaska

Hello everybody. Let me start out by saying that I have been a member of the boards for many years and post occasionally but have never written a trip report (gasp, I know!). I never seem to find the time to write it. But I have read and benefitted from so many wonderful trip reports over the years that I felt I needed to write one, especially for this trip of a lifetime. Warning before you start reading – this will be a very long trip report since our trip was 2 weeks (actually 16 days total) and may take me a while to complete. I will add pictures in as I go but some of my pictures may not be the best quality.

Ok, now for the introductions. There is me, Kris, self-proclaimed Disney fanatic and mother to a wonderful daughter.
Picture1.jpg

And my wonderful daughter, Shallon, who is 24 and was born and raised under my Disney fascination and I think she may be even passing me up with her Disney obsession.
Picture 2 .jpg

We are true Disney buddies. By the way, a few weeks before we left Shallon broke her foot bike riding so she is in a boot cast. It could have been a lot worse and she seemed to be moving around pretty well, although I did refer to her a couple times on the trip as hop-along-Shallon.

We have been to Disney World many times and go twice a year and usually spend a couple weeks each trip. We have been WDW Annual Passholders for quite a few years and really get our money’s worth out of those passes. A few years ago, a fellow board member and helpful planner turned me on to Disney Cruise Line. We had never cruised before and once I took the leap I was so hooked there is no turning back. So I blame (or thank) my helpful planner friend who I will refer to as “she who must not be named”. Now we have taken 5 cruises in the past 4 years which is quite a feat because I never thought I’d be able to swing taking a cruise in the first place. I have learned so much about cruising from the boards and from the trip reports that have helped me prepare in immeasurable ways. In addition, “she who must not be named” has answered so many questions for me over the years that I couldn’t have done it without her, plus she has the best trip reports ever. For those who have cruised with Disney, you probably know how addicting it can be. We have cruised on the Dream 3 times, Fantasy-Eastern Caribbean 1 time and most recently we cruised on the Wonder to Alaska. Now Alaska has always been a dream of mine since I was very little and what better way to experience Alaska than on a Disney cruise.

So once I decided to take the Alaska plunge, I figured we might as well go to Disneyland too. Since we live in Michigan and would be going all the way over to “that side of the country” we may as well go down to California too and experience our very first visit to Disneyland (makes perfect sense, right). So we spent a week cruising Alaska and a week in Disneyland, after all I didn’t know when we’d make it way over there again. This really was a trip of a lifetime. I planned the cruise 1 ½ years in advance so I had plenty of time to learn more. This was also a surprise for Shallon so as the trip got closer it became more difficult to pull things together without her knowing. Shallon has Down syndrome and is very much a kid at heart, which means I have the advantage of experiencing Disney life through the eyes of a child over and over, even though she is 24. But this is also why I can’t tell her too far in advance because she just can’t stand to wait for the next Disney fix (who can). For a seasoned WDW vet who can plan a trip there with my eyes closed, I was completely out of my comfort zone. This was a trip of firsts…. first time in Vancouver, first time on the Wonder, first time in Alaska, and first time to Disneyland. I sure did a lot of homework before this trip, thanks to all the trip reports. Even though I was very excited about this trip, there was also something completely terrifying about it. But the very things that made this trip scary were the same things that made it fantastic, discovering new territory. So let’s get started.

So we were starting to take it all in.

Our touring plan had us starting in Fantasyland but we got off plan a little, which was no biggie since the crowds were very low. After all this was second week of September on a weekday and most all kids were back in school so it was a great time to visit. I hear the weekends get busy any time of the year but we’ll get to that later. We rode several rides in Fantasyland and at one point I walked over to Fronteirland to get fastpass for Big Thunder Mountain.

Picture_6.JPG

The line was only 5 minutes but I left hop-along-Shallon back in Fantasyland, so I just got the fastpass so we could come back and ride later. We continued on many of the attractions in Fantasyland today, including the carousel which Shallon loves.

We stopped in a shop to take a quick look; we always take pictures of the things we don’t buy.

Picture_6C.JPG

We also got to Fronteirland, New Orleans Square, Adventureland, and Critter Country today. I loved how close everything was and with low crowds moving around in between was not a problem. I loved, loved, loved the Pirates of the Caribbean; way better and longer that at WDW.

Picture_7.JPG

Indiana Jones was awesome although it was Shallon’s first experience in one of those vehicles but she just held on tight and loved it just like me.

Picture_8.JPG

It was so nice to ride Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride which brings back memories from my childhood and riding it at WDW.

Picture_9.JPG

The Storybookland Canal Boat ride was cool and I really appreciated all the miniature cottages and castles knowing Walt’s love and fascination of miniatures.

Picture_10.JPG

Shallon really wanted to ride on Casey Jr. train, in the cage, so we did that.

Picture_11.JPG

This was another nice view of the miniature villages.

We had lunch reservations (not that we needed them) for Café Orleans in New Orleans Square.

Picture_12.JPG

Saw this beautiful flowering tree on the way; not sure what’s up with Shallon but the tree looked nice.

Picture_13.JPG

I read so much about the Monte Cristo sandwich and the pommes frites that I knew we wanted to try both. OK has anyone ever finished the Monte Cristo by themselves, it’s huge? So we split an order of each and OMG were they both delicious. We couldn’t even finish all the food as both of these items are really filling. I actually had planned on getting the Mickey beignets for dessert because I read about those too (thanks to other TRs) but we had absolutely no room to fit even another morsel into. So we waddled out so stuffed we could barely walk. We went into the Tiki Room and I just felt extreme nostalgia in there for Walt and his original park. I just kept seeing that photo of him standing there with one of the birds and the look of pride on his face.

Well I hate to waste a PhotoPass+ day but we didn’t see any PhotoPass photographers until 4:00. I was started to worry about my Photo CD purchase thinking sure great deal but you can’t find any photographers, but then we saw one around 4:00 and he was awesome. He spent so much time with us, you could tell he was bored because no one wanted their picture taken. I was all about this. We were with him for about 30-45 minutes and he took us all over the place taking photos with different views, different poses and a bunch of magic shots.

We had dinner at Jolly Holiday Bakery and had some yummy grilled cheese sammies and tomato soup, topped off by a Matterhorn Macaroon.

Picture_14.JPG

I love all things coconut and this was a fabulous treat (picture is bad, but the tasted fabulous-wish I had one now)

Picture_15.JPG

Got a few more PhotoPass pictures on the way out.

2.jpg

By the time we turned in our voucher that evening on the way out of the park to get our PhotoPass+ card & lanyard, we had 46 pictures all taken by that one guy. Thanks, Eric! I remembered his name, maybe because we spent so much time together.

We took the shuttle back to the condo and put our feet up. I know Disneyland is smaller but I felt like we walked much more, although I know we didn’t. Maybe it was all the extra weight I put on during the cruise, who knows. I felt really out of my comfort zone here at DL using a map to find a way around and actually asking cast members where the bathrooms are. But I was starting to get my bearings a bit. We still didn’t make it into Tomorrowland or Mickey’s Toontown yet, but we still have more days to come. Tomorrow is Disney’s California Adventure day. I thought we’d start with one park a day for the first two days and then mix it up and park hop.

What a great first day at Disneyland. You seem to get around pretty easy. The pictures turned out really cool. Glad you were able to find a photopass person to take all of those great shot. Following along.

Thanks for following. We ended up getting tons of PhotoPass pictures so it was a great investment.

Day 11 – Wednesday, September 10-Disney’s California Adventure Day
We got to DCA about half hour before the regular opening time at 10:00 but it was Early Entry day so some people were inside already. Check out these Disney benches and this cool spot in the middle of the esplanade.

Picture_2.JPG

Picture_3.JPG

We didn’t have Early Entry because we were still staying offsite at the condo. When they did open up the gates for regular opening we went right in and headed to the right and walked on to Soarin with no line whatsoever. Nice, sure beats the lines in Florida. We thought we’d so Soarin first so all the masses could head over to get their fastpasses for Radiator Springs. So after Soarin we headed to get our RS fastpass but they were still holding everyone at the rope for park entry (I guess it wasn’t 10:00 yet). So they opened up the ropes and we headed with the herds to get our FP and even though it looked like a lot of people, we were through the line in 5 minutes with FP for 11:30 in hand. Great, but now we needed to change our lunch reservation for 11:30 at Wine Country Trattoria that we made for the World of Color package. We again had a touring plan set up but didn’t need to use it because the crowds were so low and lines were real short. We waited less than 5 minutes at most all rides for the whole day. We loved Monsters Inc and Grizzly River Run, which we didn’t get too wet at. Cool rock.

Picture_4.JPG

Picture_5.JPG

I did stop in the gift shop and get a bag to put over Shallon’s boot cast because I thought that may be more difficult to dry out if it got soaked.

So then we went to our lunch reservation at Wine Country Trattoria.

3.jpg

Although the regular menu has quite a few choices, the World of Color package menu is limited. I got the ravioli and Shallon got the lasagna. The meals were ok (but not great) but this was the cheapest of the WOC packages and we really wanted reserved seating so we did it.

When we walked past the Radiator Springs FP again the return time was for 5:30; why not so we got another FP to ride later. We walked over to Muppets 3D but it was closed. Saw this nice mosaic bench.

We headed over to the Aladdin show which I had heard was great. After we got in line they announced that there would either be a delay of the next show or it would be cancelled. We waited it out for a bit and then they cancelled it, bummer. Oh well, we'll check back on another day.

Shallon wanted to ride all the kiddie rides in Bug’s Land.

BL_1.JPG

This land was themed so well, I loved the feeling of being the size of a bug walking through the grass.

BL_2.JPG

So we rode all the Bug’s Land rides once, except Shallon rode the ladybug one by herself (I can’t do spinning rides).

We grabbed a quick shot with Flik because after all we can’t visit Bug’s Land without visiting a bug.

After this we headed over to Paradise Pier for our first visit over there.

PP_2.jpg

Now all day Shallon has been looking at and begging to go on California Screamin (did I mention that Shallon has no fear?). Now we are not big roller coaster people (ok so maybe it’s me and I’ve just never taken her on anything real big). I mean I’m fine with something like Big Thunder Mountain but we’ve never done anything big like Rockin Roller Coaster so I wasn’t sure what to do, although I had heard that is was a very smooth coaster. Shallon finally wore me down.

PP_3.JPG

After all the line was only 5 minutes (yes, this was about 2:30 and no line). So as we are moving up quickly I am chatting with the other folks in line about my dilemma of not being sure I really wanted to do this. They (young kids, grandma & grandpa, etc) were all reassuring me that in fact I did want to do this. I’m sure if the line was longer and I could spend more time thinking about it, I would have bailed out and left. But before we knew it, we were in the seats locking down the shoulder bars and I’m having serious second thoughts, but it’s too late now. It’s past the point of no return and we’re off, OMG!!!!! I can’t believe I got on this ride, round & round, up & over, upside down (holy moly). Well we finished, all of my ride neighbors were checking in with me since we all discussed my apprehension while in line. I did not do too well. I really thought I was going to lose my lunch on the ride and I felt sick for a couple hours afterward (I know, what a baby). Now Shallon on the other hand absolutely loved it and squealed with delight the whole way. She was so excited to do such an adventurous ride for the first time. I’m sure you can sense our different experiences in the following picture.

PP_1.jpg

Shallon kept apologizing to me afterward because she could see that I was a little green around the gills, but it wasn’t her fault. I need to learn to just say “No”, now I know. Shallon does other rides by herself and this type of ride is one where I wouldn’t hesitate sending her alone and sitting by the sidelines, after all she did love it so much.

So we trudged onward (slowly) after all it was only mid-afternoon and we were her for the long haul until World of Color at 8:15. We rode Toy Story which was our longest line of the trip (about 20 minutes)

PP_4.JPG

Then Shallon rode the Carousel, Silly Symphony Swings, the Zephyr, and the Jumping Jellyfish and she loved all of these.

We stopped to get a Mickey pretzel because of course they taste better when they’re shaped like Mickey, and this helped settle my stomach a bit. Caught the Green Army Men show.

PP_9.JPG

There was a reggae band just setting up to play in the Paradise Garden so we parked ourselves for a bit in a nice spot and took a rest and listened to the music. They were really good.

The Pixar Pals parade was happening shortly so we parked ourselves in a nice viewing spot behind the rope. We barely got sat down when a very nice Cast Member came up and informed us that we better not sit there behind the rope or we will get trampled. Instead we were supposed to sit in front of the rope, what? Well this is definitely different from WDW where they make you and your feet stay behind the ropes at all times. I guess here it’s not that big a deal and the behind the rope areas are for the general masses to walk through. She then spotted Shallon’s boot cast and said she had another place for us to sit where we would be more comfortable, but I told her we were fine where we were. But she insisted so we followed her over to some benches which had just been empty. Of course they were now full and she was trying to shift people out of there so Shallon could sit. I was so embarrassed and told her that wasn’t necessary but she made it all work out; Shallon sat and I stood and all was well. We loved the Pixar Pals Parade. This guy was great.

PP_10.JPG

I loved Slinky with his “behind” walking behind.

PP_13.JPG

They kept shooting water out of the floats at everyone which was very refreshing on this warm day.

Did I mention the weather here was pretty good for the first two days, around 85 degrees and sunny.

We then went over and rode the Little Mermaid ride. Afterward, we went over to Pacific Wharf and took the bread tour at the bakery. This was really cool to see the working kitchens and how all that wonderful sourdough bread was made.

PW_1.JPG

Look at all these fish Shallon hauled in!

Extra 2.jpg

We then found a spot and sat down and kicked back for a while until it was time for us to get our seat for World of Color. Now there were already plenty of people lined up waiting for the floods gates to open and get a spot, but we didn’t have to worry since we had a reserved area with our lunch package. We waited and let the masses flood in and then slowly made our way over to the reserved area and showed them our tickets. Now who knew they actually had sit-down benches for those who were unable to stand for long periods of time (like hop-along-Shallon). Bonus! This was awesome because Shallon is not too tall and I was worried that she may not be able to see over others, but this area was elevated a bit. So not only did we have reserved spot but a bench in an uncrowded roped off area. I didn’t get a bench seat but I just stood behind Shallon on the bench, but again no crowds smushing us together; this was very nice. Now I have to say that World of Color was a spectacular show and we were truly amazed by it. Of course the good seats really helped.

WOC_1.JPG

WOC_3.JPG

After the show, we took our time exiting so we didn’t get trampled. I hate that herded feeling of crowds and not being able to move. It had been a really long day and as we headed to catch the bus we realized how tired we were. We slept very well (again).
