Disney World vs. Disneyland/DCA

I've been to WDW many, many, many times and just got back from my first trip to DL. While out there, my wife and I kept comparing everything to WDW and giving the edge to one attraction over the other. This gave me the idea for a trip report, WDW vs. DL. I'm comparing only the attractions that we did in both parks in Amaheim.

One man's opinion:

Buzz Lightyear Rides: DL's ride is not rapid fire, but the targets seem to be a little easier to hit. We gave a very slight edge to WDW.

Space Mountain: Not even close! DL has double-ride cars, music the whole way through, and is dark! A great, smooth ride, but doesn't have the same dips as WDW. I wonder what people who have been to DL and not WDW think when they ride Space at WDW for the first time. HUGE advantage to DL.

Splash Mountain: This is my favorite ride at WDW, so DL was really going to have to measure up here. I'm not crazy about the one-seat per row cars, and the inside of Splash didn't match up to WDW's. It seemed shorter and rushed. Edge to WDW.

Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: Weird thing--outside loading and unloading! Ride was virtually the same, but we didn't bounce through the Tigger section, which is my wife's favorite part. Edge to WDW.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Slower, longer, better themed at DL. They use the music from the movie in parts of the ride and it's just done better. Two dark thrill hills along the way. DL did this ride right. Edge to DL.

Haunted Mansion: Virtually identical rides, but WDW wins out with the recent rehab additions and the outside themeing of the building. WDW.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad:
Again, pretty much a carbon copy of each other. This ride has never done much for me. Even.

Soarin: The ride is exactly the same, the difference is queueing. While WDW has ecological info on the walls, DL has flight history and information on the walls for your reading pleasure. Tiny edge to DL because I enjoy the flight info more than the green info.

The other attractions we did are not at WDW, but merit mention.

Indiana Jones: This was the best themed queue at DL. While not at WDW, it's clone is Dinosaur at AK. Comparing those two, Indiana Jones got this ride right. Very well done all around.

California Screamin: Great coaster. Very smooth and exciting. One of our favorites on the trip.

Toy Story Midway Mania: I haven't ridden this at WDW, so I did no comparison. That being said, Disney scores BIG with this ride. We had so much fun doing this that we both felt it was worth standing in line for an hour a second time to do it all over again. Lots of fun!

Matterhorn: We rode this since it was a Walt original. Been there, done that, never again. A herky-jerky disappointment.

Aladdin Stage Show: Probably the best live show on Disney property, easily rivaling Festival of the Lion King. Very well done, entertaining and funny. The Genie makes the show and we had a good one. This is a must-see for everyone.

General observations: DL is quite smaller, but still has a nice charm to it. It's nice to have everything right there at your walking pleasure. We did DL and DCA for two days without any transportation other than our feet. We stayed right across the street (Fairfield Inn) and were on Disney property in 5 minutes.

I never could get over all of the outside queueing at DL. We thought we had messed up at Space Mountain when we were outside for so much of the queue, but we quickly learned that this is the way it is. We missed WDW's themeing and queueing because it seemed to tell the story better for the attraction. DL almost had a Six Flags feel to it with the outside queues.

DCA was also great. I don't know why all the complaints abound about this park. We had a great time there.

Oh yeah, the CM's at DL and DCA were fantastic. We did not encounter a "sour" one the entire trip. Very courteous, very friendly, very talkative and engaging, almost having a southern charm to them that I didn't expect in Southern California. Our attitude as park guests towards them as CM's goes a long way. Relationships are a two-way street.

Overall, a great trip, better than we expected. I'm glad we had the chance to go.

We went to Disneyland a couple of years ago, and I found myself comparing the attractions, too. I agree with your assessments. I'd add that DL's exterior for "it's a small world" is better than WDW's and that the drive from MCO to WDW is much, much more relaxing than the drive from LAX to DL.

Great report and pics!

As someone who has never been Disneyland, and who more than likely will be moving half an hour from there in a few months I was looking for a comparison just like this!

It sounds like the area is similar to how Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios are connected. I like the idea of a smaller park in a great climate, though your description of the outdoor/unthemed queues disappointed me a bit.

Great report! WTG on the medals and the marathon. I would have participated in those marathons, but my toenails were still wet, my hip was achy, my sock drawer needed cleaning, ect ect. You know, the normal things that keep a person of my athletic ability *cough* from being able to participate in such events <looks around and whistles>.

I am confused about one thing though, the HM comparison. I found that the only difference in the two now is the new footprint thing in WDW. Was there something else I missed (not being sarcastic, just asking a question to try to jog my memory). Because otherwise, the only real difference I saw is the point you enter the doom buggies (at WDW, the hallway is after the buggy entrance and you don't walk through it).

Oh, for future reference for anyone, you do NOT have to go through the short queue in DL to ride if there is no line. If you go through the closed off section where the line is put during busier times (even on an off time), you get to see all the mausoleums (sp) and statues. The CM's are happy to let you back there, and it's a great time to see part of the queue that is bypassed in slower times.

Loved the review and comparisons though! You were spot on in my opinion.

Oh yeah, Peter Pan. We'll call that even. I didn't notice any difference between the two and Joy was about to kill me for the 25 minutes we "wasted".

What?? SERIOUSLY?!?! WDW's has dirty walls and tinfoil volcanos... DL's has the starfield... which to me is just amazing.

Oh well... make that two opinions we dissagree on. I'm sorry I hyped it up for you. :(

 Ok, hold the phone a second....we did notice the starfield and commented that it was pretty cool-looking. But....didn't WDW have that at one time? It's been so long since we rode it at WDW that I don't remember it much, but it seems like WDW used to have that. I will give the edge to DL if WDW doesn't have the starfield.

Friends again?

Thanks for a great thread Scott! And congrats on finishing the marathon! Very impressive! (Though I know it's usual for you! ;) )

I'll be in DL in October and I'm really looking forward to it! I haven't been in about five years or so. And it'll be DH's first time on the west coast!

October is nice there. I think they do much more in both parks than WDW does for October/Fall. I'll be able to visit in Nov....a little to early for Christmas decorations...but will get to see HM NBC as will you. I am always amazed by that overlay!

Oh! That's great to know! Thanks! I've never seen any Disney park at Halloween.

How are the crowds?

We're only planning two days in both parks. I'm hoping that's enough time.

Crowds are very reasonable...but weekends increase a lot over weekdays. They have only really started decorating a lot in the last couple of years...autumn colored buntings, jack-o-lanterns and pumpkins around. In DCA there are Candy Corn gardens that I though were charming.

Also in DCA they do a MNSSHP type event in case you are interested...not sure of dates off the top of my head...check out the DL website. I think 4 days will be great. Two full days in DL...you may sneak back to DL on some of your DCA scheduled days (5 min. walk!)

If you check some of the recent pictures from WDW visits, you can get an idea of the fall decorations there.

Definitely catch HM-NBC while there....there is a good list of different things earlier in this thread and some others.
Do dine at Blue Bayou! And you Must do the Aladdin show

Have a great time, I'll be anxious to hear how you make out.

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

And oops! I meant we have two days do to both parks. We're thinking 1.5 at DL and .5 at DCA...?

We had two days--we did one day at each, only going back to DL to see the fireworks we missed the first day. We needed almost a full day for DCA--there's some very good things in there to do.
