Disney World smell

The only other scent besides "L'Orange," "Fall of Rome," "WDW Resort Lobby," and "Main Street Confectionary" which would be great for a candle is "Leather."

As soon as I smell Splash Mountain, I think "Ahh, ok. I'm here." And I ADORE the smell of the Haunted Mansion. And the monorail. XD just the best! I was in an antique shop & my little sister was all "Hey Liz, smell this vase!" So I smelled it & was all "Haunted Mansion!" LOL I wanted to buy it just for that. There used to be a restaraunt called "Kahunaville" in my mall, & they had this waterfall. Whenever you walked by it, you would automatically think "Pirates of the Caribbean!" It was great. Scent is DEFINITELY the strongest sense tied to memory.

After a 10 month stay in central <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:state w:st="on"><ST1 ="">Florida</ST1></st1:state> for a business project I think I figured out just exactly what that smell is: Chloramine. Most water departments use chlorine to sterilize city water, but in most of <st1:state w:st="on"><ST1 ="">Florida</ST1></st1:state> they use chloramine and it has a very distinctive smell.

Now I'm curious and I'll have to take in the smell when I go to WDW soon! BTW, thanks Jorma for the interesting tidbit on chloromine. Never heard of it before.

There are many times when I find myself somewhere and I take a breath of the air and am immediately taken back.

Usually, the first time I use the heater in my car for the winter, the air that blows out of the vent smells like WDW air conditioning... this year, it did not.

There is a cologne for men by Demeter that smells like the old UoE.

Somtimes the smell of popcorn takes me back to Main Street, USA.

Other times, and most times, the smells are quick and don't linger. They make my day and remind me that, among the chaos, I know that I can find peace at WDW!!!

I've done this! We leave in 9 days (yes 9 days!!!!!) and I have already packed a few products that I have never used before, knowing that when I use them again at home they will immediately take me back to WDW. I look forward to it! (If someone who does not share our passion for WDW were to read this they would definitely think we should be locked away somewhere.)
I do this too... and started by accident. I bought a bar of soap once for a trip to WDW, and used the last of it on the last day of a trip. I used it for years afterwards only at WDW. Unfortunately, it now makes me sick... but I still associate it with WDW.

I also have a perfume that I only use at WDW. I just smelled it now and was taken back to AKL, getting ready to go out to DTD!!!

Smell is the sense closest tied to memory!!!

we work in offices at the football stadium at florida state university (go noles!!) and today we went into the stadium to eat our lunch. well, as soon as we stepped out the doors we could smell the popcorn for the game tomorrow. it reminded us of walking into disney  :sohappy: . we smell it most fridays before a home game - it always makes us wish we were at disney instead.

Once I bought soap that smelled JUST LIKE burning rome in spaceship earth...

I love that smell. Whenever we go to Epcot we go on SSE first, when I smell Rome's ruins, it hits home that I am really at Epcot.

Ok, the weirdest thing about my Disney obsession is the "Disney Word smell." My brother and I often smell things and we are like "Smells like Dinsey World!" The smell I am describing is probably the watery, damp smell of rides like Pirates, Splash, and Small World. But both my brother and I know it. I have this speicla sulfur wash I wash my face with now and it totally smells like Dinsey. I love using it. Anyway, are we freaks or does anyone else know what I am talking about?? Ha ha.

For my wife and I it is the smell of heavily air conditioned air on a humid night. Another is the smell you get walking into the MK under the Train Station, that mix of cleaners, popcorn, and whatever else that hits you. Its been the same smell since I first went in 1976.

I agree on the water ride smell as well.

There is a smell that you get on a hot, damp morning when leaving a longhouse at the Poly and head over to the Great Ceremonial House. I actually smelled it here at home a few times this summer. There was one time my fiancee and I both looked at eachother, bugged our eyes open and said "Disney!" at the same exact time :)
I agree that Small World and Pirates has a smell too. And there is also a smell when the monorail doors open in the Contemporary lobby. I love that smell!

Ditton on the Contempory smell!

This is probably the third time I've posted this in 3 years, but...

... the thing that reminds me most of my last Disney vacation is the new deodorant I tried on my trip! I remember one day remarking how this great fragrance seemed to be follwing me everywhere -- I seriously thought they must be pumping a smell through some ventilation system throughout MK!

It wasn't until that evening that I realized the smell was me!

I *highly* recommend trying a new cologne or deodorant at WDW. You will come to associate it with Disney! To this day, I put that deodorant on and it instantly transports me back...

No lie!

I thought I was nuts by thinking the same thing! That happened to me to with new deodorant.

Getting into the monorail...now that's one smell to me that sticks out. Surprised no one mentioned it. It kinda smells like a zoo to me.

That is the smell of the guests, not the monorail :p

Reminds me of a sociology class I took once. The topic was "stereotypes one race of people may have for another". The professor asked the class for first hand examples (this was done in a very respectful way and was very interesting.)

Anyway, a person commented that when white people get wet, they smell like animals, the instructor then asked if any other non whites agreed and to a one they all sheepishly agreed that white folk have the animal smell when wet.

So, there you go.

i actually learned in biology that smell is the sense most strongly tied together with memory. even more so than site and sound

You sure you didn't learn it in an "Axe" body spray commercial? ; )

The smell of the trading posts at Fort Wilderness is very distinct. Whenever I walk into a store that has a bit of that smell, I am transported back to when I was a kid staying at Fort Wilderness with my grandparents...

Made my own Disney Memory Trigger

I've taken the smell thing a step further, by accident. About 6 years, while at Disney, we just happened to have Life Savers Raspberry Creme Savers with us at all times. I were popping them like, well, candy. Vacation ends, I don't have them for awhile, and then the next time I had one...BAM, I was back in WDW. Since then, I only eat them on two occassions...when I'm in the parks, or when I want to remember those wonderful memories. I couldn't go last year, so I just bought a big bag of the creme savers and ate them during the week that I usually go to to WDW. It's a lame substiture, but coupled with some park music that I have...it's the next best thing.
