Disney Wants You To Spend More on Souvenirs?

Yes some of the stuff is dated 2007 but for the most part it is not outdated. I bought my daughter a tinkerbell disney baby and I know they are still selling those in the parks because I bought her a different one back in Oct. I asked a person who works there if the had any MNSSHP leftover and she said no that stuff goes fast. This store is great and it is certainly not the island of misfit stuff.

I was only joking...when i said that it also goes to the effect of the POTC premiere thing that they had at WDW for the third movie...theres merch from that. I laugh because...its like you don't even have to go to these special events to get this stuff. Just like ESPN weekend...they sell all that stuff too. There are jems there ...its just hard to look for some times. One great by there would be the vintage mickey 71' messager bag...that in the parks its close to 70 dollars...and I believe I got mine for like 15 or 20. :)

Wow, don't you love it when Jim Hill makes things up? WDW started out promoting its outside-of-the-park offerings more than the theme parks. Most of the earliest promotions focused heavily on the waterskiing, parasailing, golfing, etc. It was assumed that people understood what Disney had to offer, theme park-wise. This is just echoing those previous promotions--no more, no less.

i have to agree with everyone that has been speaking of the lack of variety.

this past september when i was there, i was amazed that there was literally NOTHING (save for a few pins) Space Mountain related in the Space Mountain store that you come off the ride into. I had every intention of buying a Space Mountain shirt...or something. If I remember correctly, it was mostly HSM stuff being sold in the store...

which made....no sense....to me. (i don't hate HSM, mind you....i actually kind of like it in a guilty pleasure kind of way....)

i would love for each store to have unique items. i would definitely buy more if so.

as it is, i just save all of my money when i go for 1 or 2 shirts and a Big Figure.

I helped a co-worker plan his family's trip a few weeks ago. He was very nice and brought me a souvenir coffee mug when they returned.

I didn't mention it to him, of course; but I had to inwardly cringe when I saw the enscription "Main Street USA, Walt Disney World." The photo on the mug is a famous shot of Walt Disney standing on Main Street USA at Disneyland.

I don't get too bent out of shape about such things, but it doesn't make sense, I admit, for the mug to say one thing and picture another. I thought I'd share because it illustrates what alot of fans complain about.

Ok, two things I can't figure out for the life of me?

1.) Who the heck is paying 30 dollars for a t-shirt?!?!?!? I just bought a pirate t at the Pirates Bazaar at the exit of POTC last weekend for 18 bucks (even less after my discount). The most expensive non-couture (sp?) t-shirt I have seen is about 20 bucks. Can you get something less expensive at Walmart? OF COURSE! IT's WALMART. If you enjoy getting your Disney Souveniers there, then get them there! If you want to get them in the parks, then GET THEM IN THE PARKS!

2.) How in the world is merch spending down, when the WOD just had their biggest year ever and Staggs announced PAX spending was up significantly?

Very true.
The last time I was at the Magic Kingdom (New Year's '07) I was really disappointed that the Briar Patch store, which used to be chock full of Splash Mountain merchandise had more Pooh stuff than Brer Rabbit stuff.
Hopefully WDW will bring back some variety.

Having said that, WDW merchandise is definitely head and shoulders above the quality/variety of what they sell at Busch Gardens Tampa!!
We were there in Dec and I actually thought that store had a lot of Splash Mtn merchandise.

Many of the stores carry similar merchandise, but most have sections specific to their ride or the park. There's an Animal Kingdom sweatshirt that we've bought on our last couple of trips for the kids. The first year we only saw it at a couple of shops. This year, it was thankfully in several. In the first couple, they didn't have the size we needed and the CM called and found it at another location.

I always buy one t-shirt on each trip...except my trip in October. I literally couldn't find a t-shirt that was unique and worth the ridiculous cost (even the "cheap" t-shirts in WDW, the ones that were always $16, are now a minimum of $19...most t-shirts are around $26).

I was disgusted recently when I saw PoTC merch in World Showcase...the list of "infractions" regarding theming and junk merchandise could go on and on.

I have a sweatshirt from January 2001, it's a 100 Years of Magic sweatshirt (black). I broke the zipper, but other than being a little faded (and I wear this thing all the time), the entire shirt is intact (ie no pilling, wearing, or tears). I also have a Stitch sweatshirt from MK that I purchased in 2004 that I, again, wear all the time (at least 1 day every two weeks....it's cold here, and I'm always throwing on a sweatshirt :)). It looks brand new (really).

I purchased a similar sweatshirt in Disneyland in 2005 (Dec. 31, 2005, to be exact). I remember I bought it at night, because it was freezing. By the end of the night (about 4 hours later) the armpits and sides of the sweatshirt were completing pilling.

Within a few month of coming home, it had a slight hole in it from the wear....a few months. So between 2004 and 2005, they had to have changed their vendor for sweatshirts. If I held both up to the light, the DL one would have huge holes and be completely see through. The Stitch or 100 yrs ones would look great. I'm hoping that perhaps this new Hanes deal will make a difference in quality.

I've written so much, I don't have time to go into the lack of unique merchandise in stores across WDW. It has gotten terribly worse in the past 2 years (especially the last year) though, based on my purchasing habits and what I've noticed in 10 trips to WDW (and 2 to DL) in the past two years.

As far as the lack of merchandise variety, I kinda use that to an advantage - I just go to WoD once during a visit and buy whatever I might have had my eye on there. That way I save 10% using my AP or Disney Visa. But usually the only souvenirs I buy at WDW are an occasional t-shirt, year-dated mug, resort mug (not now that they're all the same). What I might buy in the parks themselves are things like the F&W cookbook or wine glass. For really interesting Disney stuff, I stick to eBay for the most part.

I believe Disney has announced that Haynes will be the provider for their tshirts and sweatshirts going forward. I've not noticed a problem with wear and tear, but I have seen a significant change in sizing.

I rarely buy Disney merch when I'm there.
I would buy the clothes if they were more stylish (I've always wanted a polo shirt like the Lacoste Alligator one but with Space Mountain on the chest) or maybe a line of clothes that were created w/ guest famous designers?

I'm sure you'd have the deep pocketers shelling out for Gucci Mickey shades and Omega Goofy watches.

Or, like someone previously said, make the product original and inspiring. Maybe skins for ipods and such? Maybe some kind of biodegradable stuff thats more eco-friendly? Maybe cool name-brand trainers/runners w/ disney characters on them? I dunno, right now though, i dont need a stuffed mickey mouse...I would though, love a talking Figment who interacts with you.

My point wasn't that it was cheaper at Walmart, it was that Disney is licensing merchandise to discount stores like Walmart. Then charging twice the price in the parks. If they can sell it at Walmart for $7.00 and make a profit, then there is no reason why they can't lower the price in the parks. I spent over 13 years managing a local retail chain. I know a little about the business. Sometimes you can make more money lowering the price and selling quantity. Otherwise it often times sits there until it is put on clearance, and moved to the outlets. If they lowered the price a little at the parks they wouldn't need an outlet store. That is all I am saying. BTW I don't usually buy my Disney tees at Wally World, but I liked the POTC one. I then paid $24 for a Mickey tee at the World of Disney @ DTD. But a lot of people save for years to make a once in a lifetime trip to Disney, and they aren't going to pay that much for a tee. Especially if they can get one at Walmart. That's all I gotta say 'bout that.

The merch overall is crummy and I can tell you that in the last few years have bought very very little. It seems like all the nice princess shirts are made for either kids or tweens and when they finally do make a princess shirt it's in a men's style t-shirt which I don't want.

I also will not buy any toys there anymore as they are made like complete garbage. I bought my nephew some cars truck he wanted midway through the trip and by the end of the trip there were pieces that were already broken. I could have bought the same thing in walmart for less money and it wouldn't have bothered me so much that some of the pieces broke off.

For me, one of the big problems with merch is there is no longer a good answer to the question of "What in the world am I going to do with this when I get it home?" I don't want the junk that will just sit around and do nothing. I want something that will serve a purpose.

My favorite souvineer that I got this last trip was a book from the trading post in the world showcase. The complete collection of Brother's Grimm stories. It was only like $13 and I love it. I remembered a ton of these stories from english class in elementary school. I would love it if they had more unique items like that.

Ok, from that point of view I agree. :)

A couple trips ago, I wanted to purchase a little replica model of each of the park icons. I don't mean like that $250 replica of Cinderella Castle, but like a relatively cheap (like 20 bucks each) of each of the park icons....kind of like they have for the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty in NYC. I figured I'd be able to find the stuff somewhere...but I didn't have any luck at all. Everything is plush animals, picture frames, mugs, keychains, and t-shirts. And high school musical merch has no business in the giftshop outside of Space Mountain!

I really hope that Disney goes back to park and land exclusive merch...I got some great deals on the same stuff they're selling in the parks right now at my Disney Store in the mall! By the way...snow globes are 50% off right now in the Disney Stores!

Lagging merchandise sales .... a simple reason.

1. The stuff they sell there is unoriginal, uninteresting, and uninspiring.... I took my 5 and 10 year old through the Main Street big store (whatever you call it) in December and told them they could have anything they wanted. They told me that they didn't see anything they liked, and we bought NOTHING.
I totally agree with this. I'm an impulse buyer, and if I see something I like, I'm going to get it and worry about the price later... but I rarely buy merchandise in the parks because I never see anything I really adore. Their loss.

3. It is too expensive.... people are spending more and more discretionary income on just GETTTING IN to the park.... how many people really want to spend $30 for a tee shirt?
quote]

I just wait a few months and buy the same shirt at the Premiere Outlet for $6.99 :)

I soooo agree. I only go to Disney ounce a year, and always have to hit the outlets. I use to spend all my money on disney but the past couple of years Disney merchandise seems to be very generic and nothing eye popping. Now I spend a majority of my spending at the outlets.

I'll admit I'm a bargain hunter and an eBay/Amazon/Half.com junkie. (My Father always joked I should write a book called "Full Price is for Chumps".) My family hasn't bought much from inside the parks in a long time, besides food. Almost all of our Disney shopping is done at the outlets or online. While where at the parks we'll make note of what we want and that night at the hotel we'll see if we might be able to find it online cheaper.

The quality and novelty of the merch is one thing but if I can get the same thing off eBay for half the price, great. And it's one less thing I have to pack for the trip home! I have a difficult time finding new and likeable things in the parks. I love Donald Duck (Daisy, Huey, Dewy and Louie, too!) but I can only handle so many variations on the same shirt or little plastic figure or plushie year after year before I get annoyed (good luck finding something original with just Daisy on it :brick:).

It is true you can buy a shirt alot cheaper at Wal-Mart than you can at Disney Parks.

Disney Consumer Products is totally seperate than Disney Parks Merhandise.

DCP-sells the license to places like Walmart,Target,Meijer,Kmart Etc. They either buy the products ready made from Disney like hardlines and buy massive amounts of merchandise to get "buy in deals" or they get the license for apparel like Mickey and then have a third party company actually make the shirt like in a third world Country which allows Wal Mart to sell shirts for 7 bucks.
They have to sell it dirt cheap for the fierce competition of other retailers around.

Disney Parks Merchandise-Can sell it for more since besides the local Orlando shops-Most people WILL and DO pay the prices for Merchandise.

Wal Mart has only ONE thing going for it which is PRICING. If it doesnt sell things cheap people will shop at Target.
Disney isnt in the Discount Merchandise Biz-They are in Entertainment and making memories and people understand.
