Disney trip cancelled

As far as I know Dogpatch is rotting away in the hills of north Arkansas.:hammer:

I think between Branson to the north and Hot Springs and the lakes to the south, anything would have a hard time surviving there. You are right, it was way freaky.

Dopey, How do you know about Dogpatch. I didn't think it was a big draw from Chicago??

We are going to Disney World over Thanksgiving. We had originally planned to drive but bought airfare on sale for less than gas would cost a couple of weeks ago. We flew (with the kids) from Detroit to L.A. and back last week--no problems. Like many others, I feel flying now is safer than it has been in decades.

My mother in law is supposed to meet us at Disney over Thanksgiving. She called yesterday considering cancelling her trip becuase she had spoken to friends who felt Disney World would be a prime target for an attack and the all American Thanksgiving holiday would be a likely time for such an occurennce. Our feeling is that law enforcement, the Disny comapny, etc. etc. are all activly looking for trouble so they can stop it before it starts. Therefor, the odds of someone successfully launching any sort of major attack at such a predictable time are very slim. Additionally, we have the same sort of "you can't stop me" attitude many others of you have expressed.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any obvious increases in security at Disney now, which I could pass along to my Mother in Law. My kids will be very upset if they don't get to see Gramma on this trip. Any other ideas on calming her down and gettign her to come would be greatly appreciated.

you're probably right about that. i just have an interest in offbeat attractions. the tackier the better. too bad about dogpatch.

a couple years ago, i took the family on a trip to southwest michigan and we spent a day at deer forest (or something like that) in coloma. it was like going back in time, largely because it appeared that nothing at the park had been updated since the 1950s. deer forest's big claim to fame is the largest herd of deer in captivity. it's like bambiland! only these deer are disgustingly dirty.

places like that make me proud to be an american.

Personal decision

It's too easy to tell people that they should get on with their lives ... "go to Disney", if you are not trying to make that very decision yourself.

We went to Disney in early October (flew down) with another family. There were supposed to be 2 1/2 families, but the 1/2 family choose not to go because they did not want to split up the family in times like these. I respected their decision ... a very tough decision because the daughter desperately wanted to go with her cousins.

I am also very glad that we made the trip and feel like we did our part to stand up to the terrorists. But, I don't blame people who are too nervous to fly or go places like Disney. That said, I hope everyone can feel comfortable enough to get back to normal living soon.

Yes, it is a personal decision. But I urge you to go. I am officially the worlds biggest worry-wart! No kidding. Ask anyone that knows me. Anyway, I barely worried at Disney. That is a first for me. I even wake up in the middle of the night worrying. There is added security to put your mind at ease. There is not only the security at the front gate, but there are more guards walking around the parks - uniformed and in plain clothes. We drove just because I have never been a fan of flying and it was cheaper for us to drive. Where do you gett hese good deals anyway? If I could find a good deal for December I would fly since we would have more time for the parks! I've checked all over the Internet.

We did go to Disney in early October. And, I agree with you ... we didn't worry at all. I am very glad that we made the trip. And, I would encourage others to do the same. My main point was that some people may not be ready and I don't have a problem with that.

We flew on Southwest Airlines and they seem to offer very good deals on their internet site. But, you need to be near an airport that they fly out of.

What kind of added security was there at the gates? My mother in law (who will probably now come--she is more worried about the kids than anything, and we are taking them regardless), would like to know.

For good deals on airfare we find the best way to get them is to check out prices on the web very frequently. For example: we are going from Detroit to Orlando over Thanksgiving week. We had planned on driving unless we could get airfare for less than $150 a person. The going rate for that time was $380 for several weeks on end. Because I really didn't want to make the 21 hour drive with a two-year- old and a four-year-old, I became rather obbsessive and started checking yhe prices on Orbitz about three times a day. I was glad I did. The day we bought tickets the price had been $380 at lunch time. But, when we checked in the evening it had dropped to $134. By the time I had told some friends the next morning it was back to $380. It has gotten to the point that finding cheap airfare is almost like making a day trade on the stock market!

The only extra security from when I was there was the WDW security guards cheking bags on the way in. That was it really. Nothing major, just slowed things down for getting into the parks.
