'Disney Springs' - Downtown Disney expansion officially announced

Think for yourselfer
Tried to skim after a long St. Patricks Day weekend, am I correct the food trucks in "Food Truck Row" will be Disney created/operated outlets? If so, the rumor of a Disney-created fish taco restaurant suddenly make more sense, tho it sort of defeats the whole purpose/mystique of food trucks.

From the VERY limited info available at the moment, it does seem that the trucks will be Disney owned and operated.

Someone posted a rumor about a large client rush-ordering 10 food trucks. But even if Disney owns the trucks, doesn't mean they won't lease them to third party operators just like they will do with all the buildings they own at Disney Springs.

If I was opening an expensive new restaurant in Disney Springs, not sure I would be too happy with all the inexpensive competition being put in front of me via these food trucks.

I know it's not a vendor announcement, but is news to Disney Springs none the less. Ran across this article from the Orlando Sentinel talking about how Reedy Creek Improvement District is paying and building all/both the parking garages (as of now, one garage will be 4 stories with about 4,000 spaces and the other will be 3 stories with about 2,000 spaces) estimated at $85 mil and RCID tentatively budgeted around $250 million for all the infastructure upgrades that will be made up as part of the Downtown Disney Expansion:

Edit: Saw this on the Parks Blog today about Lake Buena Vista Village (Vintage WDW post) opening around this time in 1975:

All I know is that when someone throws the 'monkeys and typewriters' analogy at me it means they are out of ideas. The equivalent of a boxer's corner throwing in the towel.
What a way to avoid the issue....

Really? That is all you know...kind of what I thought all along.

Interesting article. I'm not going to pretend to understand all the tax benefits this gives them, but if the RCID is there, I see no fault in them using it to their benefit.

Not sure who Orlando Sentinel's source from Disney was for the article, but they semi-confirm the I4 ramp into one of the garages. From the article:

"Disney defends the move. The company says the three- and four-story garages are a key component of a broader transportation overhaul that has been planned as part of the Downtown Disney expansion and will ease chronic traffic congestion in the area. That work includes a new extension off of an Interstate 4 exit ramp — partially funded by the Florida Department of Transportation — that will deposit cars directly into one of the garages."

I hope that extension is well engineered. I can only imagine tha back up that would cause.

Pretty savvy on Disney's part. It does also lead to interesting questions about the future of addressing the problem of people parking at DTD to avoid paying the theme park parking. If ReedyCreek owns the garages as reported.. there would be no way to tie Disney tokens into the parking model. RCID could contract back to Disney to operate the garages, and maybe charge parking fees and offer validation.. but everything would have probably have to operate within the context of DTD, not the larger Disney ticketing or packages.

I guess RCID is counting on the improved tax collection in DTD to pay for the ongoing upkeep.

Oddly Jason does not mention all the construction jobs Disney Springs will create and the taxes those employed will pay and all the retail businesses that will take part and all the sales taxes they will collect and all the employees those businesses will hire and all the taxes those employees will pay and all the vendors required to support Disney Springs and all the taxes they will pay and all the employees those vendors will pay and all the taxes those employees will pay and all the service vehicles that will be required to support Disney Springs and all the gas taxes generated to move those vehicles and........

or Disney could just do nothing and not generate all those extra taxes.

I thought part of the announcement was that parking would remain free. A poor decision in my book.

If this has been answered already, I apologize, but will this project go ahead in full regardless of how many vendors sign on ahead of time, or will it totally depend on commitments before hand? I guess what I'm wondering is if Disney will build hoping they will come or hoping they sign up then build the retail/food structures?

They already have many vendors as confirmed by the owner of this site. That none of those contacted by the daily Disney would talk indicates they respect their NDA's and don't want to lose out. Notice none of them claimed to not know what DS is.

To support the recently announced Downtown Disney expansion, Disney will be building 2 new parking garages, providing 6000 spaces for a cost of $85 Million dollars.
This will provide plenty of convenient and covered parking at Downtown Disney.
Doing a spot count of the existing parking for comparison and reference, I have counted the following so far (east to west):
The parking lot in front of the east Marketplace has about 275 spaces and 16 handicapped.
The parking lot in front of World of Disney has about 493 spaces and 8 handicapped.
The parking lot in front of T-Rex has about 789 spaces and 20 handicapped spaces.
The parking lot in front of Planet Hollywood has about 650 spaces and 9 handicapped spaces.
...or 2549 spaces total and 53 handicapped spaces
...less than half of the capacity of the 2 new parking garages!!!
A rough estimate of the 3 lots in front of AMC-Circ provides about 1750 spaces + 56 handicapped.
or about 4308 spaces currently available (not including the backlot, which will probably be left alone)
So we will be gaining at least 1700 additional parking spaces, and I imagine that the ~1395 spaces to the west (in front of Cirque du Soleil) will probably remain, providing over 3000 additional spaces.

Why would they? These won't be nearly as large as Universal's Parking Garages, and they will be literally within feet of the entrances.
I'm assuming the idea is to a) fix the horrible parking situations that exist there today (we once drove around each lot for nearly an hour trying to find a space during peak season) and b) make room for the increase in vehicles they expect as a result of the plans they announced.
