I have similar concerns about California's HSR because going through the central valley as opposed to running alongside I-5 just seems stupid and reeks of political medling.
I haven't been following California's progress as closely in recent months, but I think it all ultimately hinges on Los Angeles. Despite what politicians may say, the project will be almost entirely dependent on business travelers moving a between Los Angeles and San Francisco. I think the density and the transit system in the north is better set up to make entering into the city center by rail far more attractive than arriving by rail into Southern California.

You do realize the price of Oil is going to go through the roof and that regional airlines are notoriously unprofitable because of those fuel costs. There may be one day where future CEOs can only fly or ride first class (boo hoo!!) because jet fuel is too expensive. Sure aircraft will be getting more and more efficient, which is a good thing, but electrification of planes is a long ways off and that's the only real way for your example to work under.
Reality misses you, it wants you back!

Actually small electrified short range aircraft are not far off at all. They are already testing them. The early versions of these type aircraft, fueled by traditional methods, are extremely efficient because flying is so efficient. That is why many UAVs can stay aloft so long.

Sorry if my vision is punking your reality. Happens a lot.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Not a bad word, Jennifer. Just an honest one. I don't go to WDW to shop, especially for the same stuff I can either get in every Disney shop on property or for stuff I can get at home for less.

What percentage of WDW visitors truly consider DD a key component of their MAGICal vacations? If I had to guess it would be somewhere less than one or two percent. People want to make this 'extra' like it's a key ingredient in the main course.

It wasn't in 1986 or 1996 or 2006 and it won't be in 2016 either.
Some of us who hail from different countries, be it Canada, UK or Brazil, find DD to be an integral part of the Disney vacation. There are so many shopping opportunities and stores that are just not available up here. Case in point, all the folks (not me) who lined up for hours to shop at our very first Target store earlier this month.
I visit DD each trip to have my caricature done by Charles, get lost at World of Disney, buy Mr. Potato Head pieces, indulge myself at Basin, eat at Earl of Sandwich and Wolfgang Puck Express and hop on the boat to go to POR/POFQ.
I look forward to the increased shopping opportunities that this expansion will provide. And it will be lovely to be able to find a parking spot without driving around for 20 minutes first, stalking folks back to their cars, only to discover that they are only making a drop off.
And for someone who HATES to shop, I manage to drop a boatload of money each year at DD.
I don't care what they call it - I'll go. And spend. Which, after all, is why they are building it.

And yet Downtown Disney is not enough of a draw that it is worth 15 minutes of walking from one of the further lots.

But wouldn't you want a couple nice E tickets/improved parks to go along with the Apple store, Lululemon, etc??

Sure, who wouldn't, but it's not like they said you can have this project or a couple of E tickets and people are choosing an upgraded shopping mall. With this project others are paying a large chunk of the bill. The leases with all these new 3rd party vendors ensures a sold return on investment. I doubt if they skipped this project that the funds would go to e tickets instead. It's not an either or situation.

I understand that and agree with you that Disney wouldn't do this project unless other paid, but that's not an excuse for Disney not to aggressively invest in their parks and infrastructure while their competition is going to be sucking more days away from Disney because they invested in their product. UNI or SW getting one more day from the average Central FLA guest hurts Disney really badly when you multiply that by the millions.

Oh yes, please.
And hopefully, those are coming - to DHS and DAK, according to numerous rumours. I am eagerly awaiting those announcements. In the meantime, this Disney Springs expansion appears to be legit, and imminent.

We definitely agree that the current plan for WDW seems to be short sighted and foolish. They need to step up and start investing more in the parks too. Short term winners like DVC and Disney Springs are supposed to be compliments to the real draw which is the parks. All that being said I still like the plans for Disney Springs and I don't see any reason why going forward with this project should prevent further adds to the parks. I just see it as a nice complimentary add to the total experience.

Won't happen because we're Americans ... rugged individuals and you'll pry these car keys from our cold dead collective hands ... BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

How y'all enjoying that $4.25 a gallon gas? What is that you say, your employers are covering that with raises ... oh, no, must have misheard!

Gas is that high somewhere?!

One thing that I think is being overlooked is that the parking structures are not going to be putting people where they like to park today, in the lots that provide immediate access to the Marketplace. Everything is being organized to dump people into the Town Center that will be located to the south, southeast of Pleasure Island. I wouldn't be surprised if we end seeing something similar to what we see now, with there being greater demand for the east structure than the west structure.

Spirit, you really don't think there will be driverless cars in THIRTY years? Think about where technology was in 1983! Google already has a fleet of driverless cars with 300,000 miles of accident-free driving and Cadillac, as soon as this year, could release "Super Cruise", which maintains highway speed, keeps you in your lane, and reacts to safety hazards.

The heavy legal and philosophical questions will keep driverless cars off the road for a while, but I think we are at the point today where Google's cars can drive at least as well as most people.

People don't Like Disney tracking them inside Walt Disney World. It'll be a cold day in hell when Google's technology leaves their hands without it serving their insatiable appetite for data.
