Disney-Sony Studios?

Disney's deal with MGM does expire in June, BUT with Sony buying out MGM, it might stay. Disney has announced that it will be going with Sony's Blu-Ray DVD technology (As will be used for the PS3), so I could see the MGM name saying if nothing more than so Sony can still have SOMEONE* using Blu-Ray.

*Sony has been having a hard time selling Blu-Ray over Toshiba's (I think) HD DVD tech, so they need Disney right now.

Personally, I'd like it to be renamed Walt Disney Studios because Walt is the reason for everything. People would probably call it Disney Studios out of laziness just like Disney World. Don't forget about Walt!!!!

Or Michael Eisner Studios since it was his creation. :lol:

I agree with you, I find my self always correcting people when they call it disney world or disneyland florida, I find it a little bit disrespectable for people to call it a wrong name and even after being corrected still refer to it as the in correct name. I suppose calling it Disney World is ok because it is still pollitically correct but Disneyland Florida just bugs me.

I disagree with that statement. I would be really upset if they took the MGM out of the park title. I've gotten so used to it that I would just hate to see it be removed. Even if they do, I'm still calling it the Disney-MGM Studios.

LOL. Hopefully folk will know your joking so you wont take too many pelters from ppl...you are joking arent u? Could you imagine that with how everything is shortened it could become "The ME Studios" - god that makes u cringe dont it?

Anyway yeah ive noticed that last few years the MGM titling has been gradually dissappearing and certainly in the UK the planning videos have been referring to the "Disney Studios". Also on some of the buses - the ones with the new orange LED displays that its been 'Disney Studios'.

Would be good though if Disney / Sony do go into a more sortof public partnership where its more obvious and could lead to more Sony tech and such like seeing its way into parks / resorts etc etc. Maybe in certain places - a couple of deluxe resorts in the shops there could be a small counter or stand with Sony products. Hmmm maybe im just saying that cos i would love that cos it means i could get high end Sony goods at half the price they are here. But i think that there could be a market for it. Anyway it would be good to see a partnership between these two big names.

I wonder if Disney and Sony teamed up, could there be a Spiderman ride based on the movies?

There is already a Spiderman ride at Islands of Adventure and it is one of the most popular rides in the park. I believe that they have a deal with Marvel Comics for all their characters.

Some clarifications. When mergers happen although it does effect things done in the past in this case it won't. Universal Studios has the exclusive rights to Warner Brothers attractions at the moment, just like Disney has the exclusive rights to making a Harry Potter attraction (No, we don't need more threads saying how we don't want a Harry Potter attraction, I'm just making a point). The MGM name is going to be eliminated from future movies unless they are part of an existing MGM movie series. That being said, Disney is changing some of the signage to simply, "The Studios", but don't be suprised if they get away with calling it MGM Studios for quite some time.

The Sony/MGM merger/takeover/whatever it was, was actually announced a few months ago so much of this speculation has already been discussed.

I am all for that myself. A Disney/Sony partnership would GREATLY expand the possibilities of the park, as well as helping Disney-MGM get the rights to use Columbia/Tri-Star and other Sony motion pictures and properties in the theme park!

Anyone ever thought about that before? :animwink:

Actually Apple Computer also is behind Sony for the Blu-Ray for they forthcoming line of G5's HD.

As for the studios to have deals for rides Disney has deals with Lucasfilms for Star Wars and Indiana Jones (from 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures) they need to license from other studios without having to do a great deal like "Disney / MGM / Sony studios"

And as for music license they just need to pay ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, and virtually all the music in the world is available.

But as for my wish to see it better Disney / ABC Studios (makes more scence don't you think?)

After reading DisneyWars, the discussion with Sony has a whole different angle. Sony management has been enamoured with Disney for a long time, and there have been a lot of efforts to do joint work. (Then again Eisner tried to pawn off Ovitz on to Sony). But overall, I think there is a lot more desire for the the two companies to work together that with the previous MGM relationship.

Although a Sony/Disney partnership would be interesting, I'd put money on the fact that if MGM goes away so will the name for the studios, I just can't picture Disney-Sony Studios on a markee. I wouldn't really expect too many Sony influences either IMO except maybe within the Great Movie Ride, which has properties from MGM, Warner, Miramax, etc. Interesting news though...

A couple of months back some one spoke said that in the UK, on the planning videos they were not allowed to call it Disney-MGM and referred to it as The Disney Studios, does any one know what this legal glitch was?

I think I remember reading that it was something to do with the contract no longer being valid for international name use. Or something.

As regards the naming of Disney parks, etc, and how people often (not by intention ofcourse) get it wrong, the one that is bugging me at the moment is 'Disney Paris.' However, I also find it weird how I find it offensive!!! :veryconfu

I don't call it Disney World out of laziness, Roy had a very big part in creating the resort in Florida, so to me it is more so respect for the brothers that were Disney.

I could be wrong, but I believe during the planning process Walt Disney wanted to call his "Florida Project" just Disney World. I believe it was Roy Disney who changed the name to the current Walt Disney World. Not positive.
