Disney Skyliner shutdown and evacuation - October 6 2019

It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
We all saw it coming, but I don't think we ever thought it would happen this soon.

Now just imagine what it would be like in those cars in the summer for 4 hours in 95+ degree heat and 90% humidity.

Were the Skyliners actually necessary?

Except you were trying to say the entities were --legally-- tied together and obligated by HIPAA --due-- to that relationship. None of which is true. Your deflection to lay understandings of RCID is a nice deflection.. but has no standing when it comes to your earlier claims. Which were, and still are, bunkus.

This isn't horseshoes or hand grendades...

Last I'm posting about this. Even the minors can follow this one... clearly you can't and don't want to. So p00f

Not sure when I said that. I said HIPAA is not confined to only health care companies, it includes companies with health care professionals in their employ, and companies that have sensitive employee health information in their files. Which includes Disney, RCID, and RCES.

Just to give you an idea of how unbelievably complicated it is to evacuate a single cabin, here's a video. According to Twitter its taken a single fire engine about 20 minutes to get the lift up to a single cabin. Assume they have secure everyone in the cherry picker, slowly lower it back down, disembark, and go back up for the rest of the cabin. Then they have to retract the stabilizers on the truck, reposition the truck for the next cabin and repeat. Fire truck cherry pickers are not fast. This is going to be a long night.

How about the people who had to zip line out of the cabins over the water strapped to a firefighter.
I don't think Disney thought this through all the way in their haste to make these skyliners.

Ten years ago the monorail got the worst press ever when two trains collided, killing a cast member. Seems like ridership is at an all time high these days!

True, but the monorails had an incredibly clean history for decades before that.
These skyliners literally just started and within a week...this.

Now imagine if it was a summer afternoon 95+ degrees with 90% humidity and people were caught in there for 4 hours.
From some of the twitter reports from those stranded they said it was getting hot in the cars already and that was at night.

If they offered you a cupcake and a reserved seat for fireworks afterwards they could charge $379 per person as a great upcharge event. It would be especially popular for bachelorette parties ;)

Not that I love looking at endless posts about relative humidity, RCID trash services, and HIPAA, but with regards to the Skyliner, has it moved at all since Saturday, any indication that stuff is being done?

There have been sporadic running of lines, including Epcot's, without guests. More often not running than running. Reports of CMs hanging around stations without knowing why (retraining? thought they might open that day?).

Hmmm my inclination is that this doesn’t seem to be indicative of an upcoming near term return to service. I think this incident exposed some major flaws with the operation and design of the system.

Depends on the cause of the accident. Could be a major flaw but also something relatively easy to fix...or we could have Yeti like problems :(

I’m not talking necessarily about a technological flaw like sensors or motors, more of how the system components are operated, including emergency communications, identification, training, rescue procedures, etc. A sensor or programming fix is easy to remedy, the other stated items are not.

Um, no. Monorails had a serious collision in 1974, resulting in the destruction of two trains and serious injuries to the driver (who lost his lower intestine). And there were several close calls during the time I worked there.

People saying they saw this coming are a bit ridiculous. I'm as tough on Disney as any, and was against these for the sight lines as much as anything. But, I never imagined they would run them with such slow evac times, and certainly didnt see a crash coming. Good lord, this isnt some brand new technology. You didnt see this coming. You can disagree with the skyliner and still be surprised it had an issue like this.

I also am not sure this is an easy fix. Even if it is operator error, i would bet they wont just stick a training video in and restart. My guess is they will demand a safety feature install to ensure this kind of operator error cant happen again (or I would hope that). If something mechanical, again, they will need to find the cause, then probably put a backup in place to stop this from happening. I'm completely guessing on this, but I could see some major work needing done here.

The Skyliner is being dismantled right now at this very minute. Engineers are on site right now digging very large holes to bury the components. Anyone who tells you differently is part of the Disney PR spin machine. One might even categorize them as #FakeNews. Do not believe what you see, hear, or are told. The Skyliner has ceased to exist.

Does anyone know the reason the line just wasn't restarted? From the looks of things there must have been a massive mechanical failure or a management massive failure. Disney doesn't teach people to think so I'll go with massive management failure.

By the looks of it in the photos, the cabins piled up pretty good in the Riviera station. The blue cabin was likely jammed pretty well to stay put with the mass of three cabins pushing against it. (Whether the jam was the cause of the breakdown or a result of it remains to be seen)

So it wasn't as simple as turning it back on to move the cabins on the line to a station. The mechanics needed time to assess what was jammed, how they could un-jam it, whether there were critical parts damaged by the jam, and then institute whatever un-jamming plan they came up with.

From earlier reports, while they were in the process of figuring that out, RCFD decided that they couldn't wait and went for the aerial rescue of one or more stuck passengers with reported medical issues. That then necessitated locking everything down so no additional work could be done by the maintenance people. (Though presumably they could still do visual inspections while waiting)

And as we've learned in the past, RCFD's calls pretty much override everything else. Does anyone remember the time RCFD called the MK pyro team and told them to stop the fireworks mid-show because a guest in the park saw a castle-mounted pyro effect, thought the castle was really on fire and dialed 911?
