I think when they expand this area they should change sunset blvd to Broadway blvd and give it a 40s/50s LA broadway feel. New facade on Hyperion to make it look like a theater, make it a land full of dark rides all themed to look like Old Historic LA theaters. Kind of like CA version of fantasy land with 3, 4 or 5 dark rides. 1 major ride, a couple smaller ones, have one of them buiilt in a way to rotate out new set pieces and refit it every coupe years with major Disney film releases, so every 3-5 years it will be a different ride experience.
I had also proposed a ride concept that ties into what you mentioned a fantasia moving walkthrough attraction that is interactive. This could also be where DCA gets its first trackless dark ride and I would have it themed to the Disney villains where you team up with mickey to do battle with them.I've often fantasized about a pretty similar idea. Completely bulldoze and rebuild/rebrand as Walt's Hollywood. If Buena Vista Street is Los Angeles as Walt experienced it upon arrival, Walt's Hollywood could represent Los Angeles of the 1930s through the 1960s, as the company flourished. It'd work best as a sanitized, fantasy "Hollywood that never was and always will be," as opposed to a historically accurate representation.
Ideally attractions would be based on films and characters from the era. As in your idea, entering through facades of theaters showing film premieres (or through other LA landmarks) would allow for a variety of attraction sensibilities. Prior to the announcement for Toontown, I figured Runaway Railway could be a suitable centerpiece for this (imagined) land. Perhaps alongside Toad/Pan-style Minnie and Goofy dark rides. Or a full-fledged Mary Poppins attraction. Or, you know, Encanto or Turning Red. Could be flexible. Anything but Award Wieners.
You know, I would love to see a Muppet attraction in there. Why not bring back The Great Muppet Movie Ride? That will be more suitable.
From what I read the former DCA version had superior tech to the one in Florida due to it opening almost 10 years later and I agree. The curtains looked better in the DCA version and there were several other details that just looked more refined (for example in Hollywood Studios the projectors fade out before the curtains close while in DCA it is timed better so the projector fades out when the curtains are fully shut). But because of the demographics of DLR and the fact that there are some people on the internet who think 4d theaters are outdated ride systems, I don't see Disney doing another theater attraction. guests would rather have a state of the art interactive ride instead like my armchair imagineered idea above.Muppet Vision is an all-time favorite of mine, but I understand locals don't necessarily revisit shows again and again the way tourists do.
I just now realized the Muppets have no presence at the Disneyland Resort. Not sure why. WDW even has multiple Muppets restaurants. A practical-effects Muppets dark ride would be such a slam-dunk for DCA, but I'd settle for any presence at all.
I think the show building for an E ticket ride should go in the transportation hub and replace monsters in the process. though I wonder what will replace the Hyperion will it be used for an attraction for this new land, or will it be sucked into Avengers Campus? That hole north area of Hollywood backlot is such a wasted space of prime real estate.
Aside from the monorail track creating an obstacle the muppets building alone now turned Mickey philharmagic uses twice as much land then it needs.
When the park opened I was surprised to see how much room they left for an outside queue and how much space they used for just the fastpass machines.
Then they had this huge indoor waiting room.
Not once did any of that get used to its full potential.
I still believe that someone read the online boards and saw the idea that I posted in regards to opening up a doorway near the wiener stand and the info the area I to a sit down spot to enjoy the food.
Few months later after I posted it the place got turned I to a seating area.
They really need to push forward and reroute the monorail. Have a plan for that whole area of Hollywood that involves expanding north Into the shuttle area.
Even if the bridge and structure is going to take a bit longer they can start building in sections. Start by tearing out muppets building and the whole center area street and useless stage area
I think they're trying to reclaim the Hyperion for the Backlot. Half the tables that were being used for Avengers Campus overflow dining there were moved onto the Campus itself recently. I wouldn't be surprised if more get moved within its perimeter if they can figure out where to squeeze them in. To me this indicates a desire to do something with the theater. Though I think they'd have to move the Shawarma Too cart as well. While it takes up little room, it establishes the boundaries of AC as being outside the walls. I think they could easily swap it with the snack cart across from the Mission: BREAKOUT queue though. People would have to walk a little further for their ice cream treats, but it would be better for thematic integrity to pull it all within the land rather than spilling into the Backlot.I think the show building for an E ticket ride should go in the transportation hub and replace monsters in the process. though I wonder what will replace the Hyperion will it be used for an attraction for this new land, or will it be sucked into Avengers Campus?
Do you think they will continue to do plays for the theatre? If we hear nothing at D23 (they could do an Encanto production) and it sits empty for the next year I am going to say it will be used for an attraction (likely E ticket) in the future.I think they're trying to reclaim the Hyperion for the Backlot. Honestly, I'm not sure. Those of us Marvel park fans have been joking for months that they should put "Rogers: The Musical" in there and just annex it into Avengers Campus. Personally, I'd love to see some variation of either the Paris Marvel stunt show or the Spider-Man Broadway show in there. (Or Mary Poppins or Beauty & the Beast if they wanted to go classic Disney since they already took Lion King back over to DL. Although I know WDW regulars are tired of the Beauty & the Beast show there, I think it would still be welcome here. I expect Encanto to go directly to Broadway rather than show testing it in the Hyperion first as was done with Aladdin and Frozen.)Do you think they will continue to do plays for the theatre? Based on the size of HL, I wonder if they will do a land with one theme or do a catch all land with one theme but different attractions like a hypothetical area themed to classic Disney animation. I actually think a Disney animation land (no Pixar) would be great as it would fit in with nearby Buena Vista street and provide balance to DCA for a park that is 50% Marvel and 50% Pixar. Do you they would more likely theme it to classic Disney Animation studios or do it with the modern properties?Honestly, I'm not sure. But as much as I love the theatrical experience - and as many times as I gladly went to see Aladdin there repeatedly, and Frozen less often - I'm not sure an enclosed theater with an hour long production is attractive to those who run the parks at this point. I'm not sure Philharmagic (which granted is a screen attraction, not live theater) gets much attendance and if that much shorter presentation doesn't pull the crowds inside a theater, I don't see this TikTok short-attention-span generation lining up for another theatrical show.
Sad to say, as the Monsters Inc. attraction is still a fave of mine in that park, I think the best solution is to raze everything to the ground in the Backlot and build a new land there from the ground up. I'm just really sorry that Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway didn't go into the Hollywood Backlot. It would have been PERFECT thematically and added a great and needed attraction back there that ToonTown/DL didn't need. At this point, I've no idea what they'll do with the land, but I doubt the theater is in it for the long term.
I've been going to DCA since it opened and watched ITTBAB, MV3D, GD, and MP numerous times, the busiest I've ever seen a screen attraction was Phillarmagic on opening say and the theater was only around 50% full. I've never seen any show at the Hyperion where the theater isn't at least 80% full. But as much as I love the theatrical experience - and as many times as I gladly went to see Aladdin there repeatedly, and Frozen less often - I'm not sure an enclosed theater with an hour long production is attractive to those who run the parks at this point. Personally I remember seeing ITTBAB multiple times when I was younger but I think I only ever went to the Aladdin show once and never went to Frozen. I don't know why, I know for Frozen I didn't care about the IP but I really enjoyed the Aladdin show but I think either we didn't want to have to wait for specific show times in a theme park or because my 2 brothers only cared about rides and not shows and such at the parks. I do regret not seeing Frozen at least once now since I am older and go without my family I can do the little experiences my brothers didn't care about. If they put another show in there then I will make sure to go at least once, but I truly am not sure if they will put another show in there. I could see Disney not wanting to pay all the performers and seeing it as a long term cost cutting project to convert the space into a new ride but only time will tell.
Yeah I think that was my parents' big thing when we went as a family when I was younger, I don't know exactly how long the shows are but I don't think my parents wanted to spend that much time on a show when we only had 2 or 3 days and so much stuff we wanted to do.Yeah I’m confused about who these Hyperion shows are for? If you’re an AP it’s probably a one and done and if you re a tourist spending 1-3 days are you really making time for it? Granted, the Aladdin and Frozen shows were full right? So people were watching.
Good point on the timing issues. You have to make it a point to see the Hyperion shows. ITTBAB and the like are on a loop every 15 minutes. Not to mention less of a time investment.
