We've been through this. Riviera was mentioned literally right before the Gondola announcement which included a map showing the station stops. They couldn't show the map without explaining what Riviera was.

We have indeed been through this....lol
It is a Disney held press event where they show off new things they are working on.....Regarding the hotel, they didn't have to mention it at all except to say a future new resort coming soon.... Instead, they named it and showed art... They have many times not fully explained a coming resort or attraction...In this case they should have said nothing about it if they were not ready to show it...but I believe they were ready enough...so naturally when you unveil a new resort to a fan community , people are going to discuss what they see...they knew that going in too...
Have YOU seen better artwork? do YOU know the details of what they are building and it's going to be spectacular and thematically appropriate?

That's ok. It better than the fake copper "French" roof cap on the Coronado tower. They musta gotten a "2For1" deal or something.

Here is what Universal is building right now. It is a contemporary themed value resort with a rooftop lounge. It doesn't look ANYTHING like the Fairfield Inn out by the interstate exit.

To each their own. To me this looks like an average suburban office building.

Everyone is throwing around that 'exciting' word.

What DVC (with the exception of AKL) was 'exciting' when we first saw the art? The Poly Bungalows?

When the first round of DVC went in, obviously thats too long ago for such discussions to happen, but lets go through the list:

AKL - sure. Great gimmick. Obviously. However, it took them forever to sell, and I believe you can STILL buy in there.
Bay Lake Tower - the art and look were absolutely HATED around here.
Boulder Ridge/Copper Creek - I don't remember the discussion of the original art, but it seems everything thinks the final design is boring
Beach Club - too old
Boardwalk - too old
Villas at GF - I don't remember anyone being 'excited' about it. Of course a lot of people complaining about it ruining the resort, views, etc.
Old Key West - too old
Poly Villas & Bungalows - as above. The bungalows where thought of as cool, but people hated them changing the resort
Saratoga Springs - definitely no one excited. Big resort, decent theme, no real 'wow factor'

I'm leaving the non-WDW ones out of this.

My point is only that just because 'we' aren't excited about the resort from the art doesn't mean thats anything new or that it won't be nice once its open.

The art is boring and uninspiring. It shows us nothing but the approach to the front of the hotel. I don't need to see any additional art to know this won't be the best of it. Do YOU believe when they go to sell Riviera that this piece of concept art is the only thing they will use?

As far as knowing any additional info, I am not the one claiming to know the theme and details. I already said I/we have no idea what this resort is all about. Maybe the theme will be spectacular and theatrically appropriate, maybe it will be tacky and out of place, maybe it will be boring or maybe there will be no theme at all and it will just look like a Holiday Inn. My whole point is that we really can't jump to a conclusion based on one vague piece of concept art.

and I think when Disney does a big splashy reveal and show off a piece of concept art of the hotel, you are right to judge it on what they are showing you...they are showing it to elicit reactions... mostly I am sure they were thinking it would all be positive... and it certainly looks pleasant, but not anything worth showing to excite a crowd.....

It is not a great match-up but at least it is resort level/resort level appropriate... Not a mid level value resort next to a luxury level DVC resort...sharing facilities, but not theme at all...
So another example of a bad pairing does not make a compelling reasin to put a Riviera-themed Resort on the same property as a Caribbean Beach themed hotel....

I'd argue the proximity of the two resorts could be, in Disney's/DVC's mindset, a feature and not a bug.

When offsite guests or people who prefer to drive versus use the internal bus system go to MK, they have to take the ferry or monorail, ride past the "deluxe" monorail resorts and have that moment of "we could/should stay in one of these hotels one day." And with the advent of DVC, now there's the potential longing of "we could stay here every year." Does it happen to every single guest every single time? No. Has it happened to you? Don't know, and it's moot because neither one of us is Everyman. On these boards alone I've seen/read just as much (if not WAY more) anecdotal evidence of people always wishing to stay onsite when they see the various resorts as I do of people who always stayed onsite and then made a decision to go offsite and preferred to know that it happens. The pre-planned necessity to go past the resorts to get to MK was one of Walt's original ideas for WDW as much as it was the idea of "escaping the real world" with a special ride to the MK.

Now when it comes to a moderate resort next to a DVC resort? Maybe some snobs out there won't want to stay there because of the proximity to CBR, like they'll somehow get moderate cooties. But more likely, they're hoping being that close to the DVC will inspire CBR guests to consider at least touring the grounds, if not taking the plunge.

Same deal with the sky gondola. People staying at either CBR or Pop or going to have to go past the Riviera in order to get to Epcot, as well as the other Epcot resorts. You think there won't be a shpiel on the intercom about the sheer awesomeness of ye olde Best Kept Secret? How affordable it can be to relive the magic year after year, etc? You think there won't be a nudge to inquire to a DVC representative about a tour, since after all, you don't even need to be picked up or dropped off, it's right along the way?

You won't be high enough to see over the trees down into the backstage of the national pavilions. You won't even see the top of the lagoon. You'll be high enough to see any fireworks that are one to two stories high and taller.

So I think it actually is going to be called Disney's Riviera Resort. When Chapek first says the name it just sounds like Disney, but if you listen closely he does slip in the 's:

And on the Skyliner map we see that the 's is clearly there, and I have a hard time believing they made a typo on the official logo.

I'm officially making this my prediction, and at some point we'll find out if I'm right. In the meantime we might as well correct this thread title @wdwmagic ! ;)

Unless something changes it will be called Disney Riviera Resort. That is the current official name. The text on the slide is a typo in a generic font, not the resorts official logo.
