News Disney plans to include a black Santa Claus at Walt Disney World this year as the company continues its diversity and inclusion program

This has truly been a fascinating read.

Only thing to add as it popped up several times by different posters: people are surprised Santa is divisive in a society where everything is divisive?

My take? To each his own on how they choose to view Santa.
Divisive actions and rhetoric in general conducted by sad individuals unfortunately get filtered to others who buy into it.

IMHO its always good to be mindful of the past, but not stuck in it. Today isn't yesterday and never will be.

My real point was the second sentence of that post: "At any rate, the version of Santa we’re discussing here has very little to do with his historical namesake, who may not have been black but wasn’t a rosy-cheeked white guy either."

@Sir_Cliff put it very well:
I apologize. I was focused on Saint Nicholas because he is a saint I have venerated and pray to. Sometimes you just see one part of a post and then launch like a rocket without weighing everything else.

My only issue is it could be confusing for young kids who still believe in Santa. Many communities have a version of Santa in malls, etc. that are consistent with the Santas that kids are taught in their homes (that are consistent with their race). And they can go and visit those Santas at a time of their choosing. I think this is a unique issue because belief is a major component of this. I think Disney would be better off removing Santa altogether and give parents more control over their kids belief in Santa.

Black kids/parents face the problem all of America right now because we continue to promote white Santa.
Nobody is forcing anyone to visit Santa at Disney World….

Because when a child sees 2 different people that are both supposed to be the real Santa and they look wildly different, how is that possibly a sufficient response?
I mean, my 3 year old at Disney world 3 years ago believed the princesses were real. She saw two wildly different ariel’s hours apart, one in Cinderella’s Royal Table, and the second at her grotto. And you know what? Somehow it wasn’t a big deal…

@ Fido....yeah, as somebody that never had any love or attachment to Santa,...not even in childhood, I have to agree with you.

Honestly, in today's age I dont even know why this myth is even still taught to kids. I figured out at about 6-7 years old that he was a scam. If I could do that in the 1970's,...kids much smarter today should figure it out even earlier?

I do find the argument itself about it to be quite hilarious!

We can all agree on one thing, at least we don't have to worry about this creepy as heck Santa Claus that was seen in this animatronic stage show at "Santa's Village" complete with an Elvis Elf and Rudolph. Also Santa's laugh is creeping me out! That is not a "Ho Ho Ho"!

That’s my point. And they exist in America too. I’m saying that it’s ridiculous argument when people say world showcase should have the “racial” Santa’s because you simply can’t pick one race for that country’s Santa. Any country can have any race santa, including America.
This is the feedback of a few that are perturbed that Black Santa is coming to theme parks to improve Disney 's diversity and inclusion. It would not surprise me if more African Americans come to WDW because of this.

What about Asian Santa and Hispanic Santa?

If you are being inclusive shouldn’t santa just be a part anyone can audition for no matter your race or gender. And shouldn’t this be be the same for all roles? Its either anyone an play anything or only x people can be y. When you start to put barriers in place to some people, even if its done for ‘diversity’ you alienate people and create prejudice by subconsciously saying that person is right but you aren’t
