Disney plans themed hotels for major U.S. cities

Does anyone think this would take away from the "magic" of traveling to Disneyland or Disney World? If we could just drive an hour or so to get to a Disney themed area, we all would do it, yes. But would we then lose the novelty of going to Disney World?

No, I see it as a way to have a little piece of the magic until your next trip. Also, I'd be more inclined to buy into the DVC if I had one nearby that I could visit often. However, I doubt they'll ever build in New Orleans...

I can't see it happening any time soon. Location, Location, Location is the first requirement. We had a rumor up here in New England a few years back, that Disney was considering coming to the area, and the word was 'weather, weather, weather'. I can just see the environmental issues being raised every time construction begins. To spread throughout the U.S.A. would be to remove the magic and the escape that Disney provides in its resorts now. Too much of a good thing is not good.:xmas: :xmas: :xmas:

If it does happen I say it will only be in L.A., NYC, Detroit and probably Bakersfield. I wouldn't even doubt Myrtle Beach, Richmond (VA) and Seattle. I say it won't get too big because of other construction plans.
Bakersfield... a lower middle class California city with a population that consists predominantly of immigrant cattle farmers and cows?

I think not.

Oddly, I've predicted this rumor for years. Ask any of the long time members who've known me personally... this is something that I could honestly see, and see quickly. There are so many cities in the US with rich and unique histories, as well as very unique architechtural styles that are open for Disney (Boston, Richmond, Washington, San Francisco, etc) to settle in.

I just heard this reported on CNN...also said they were considering the possibility of smaller theme parks throughout the US.

This whole thing is reminding me of the time the media caught wind of a rumor that Disney would purchase Coney Island...I'm just not seeing this coming to frutition.

Well, I can see the possiblity of more hotels becoming reality because they've already experimented with it, and it's worked (Vero Beach). However, I don't see the smaller theme park concept ever happening...maybe a show inside the hotel (sort of like casinos do) but nothing bigger than that.

Does anyone know whether or not Vero Beach and Hilton Head have been profitable ventures. I have never heard any figures for these two resorts specifically, and it seems building new hotels in major U.S. cities would hinge on how successful these first two ventures were.

Well, I think it could work if Disney goes back to good theming that is NOT based on regular Disney characters, but instead just good adventurous architecture that matches a theme (like the WDW resort hotels). Something new and different, but with the "buzz" of Disney's world-renowned service and attention to detail.

I believe that the Hilton Head and Vero Beach resorts' performances could help signal whether this would be successful, though.

My only real concern would be that the current trend has been to make everything about characters instead of total imagination and detail, as it had been over prior 20 years. "Brand managers" have to broaden their horizons on this one and let Disney be the imaginative company it can be, in order for this to be successful.

I think of ideas that stem from the old ski resort idea that Walt had in mind before he died also ....

I think if there were an idea for a "mini-park" that would be successful, this is it. Something that is far enough from regular Disney parks distance wise and different from a traditional Disney theme park. A ski resort similar to the look of the Wilderness Lodge, with restaurants for every price range, a theater for shows, etc.
