Well, it looks like D23 is doing a really nice thing on the final weekend. On Saturday, August 12, they are hosting a special event for both D23 members and the official TCM Backlot Fan Club: a pre-opening "attraction experience with special guests, a delicious breakfast at the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant, and a one-of-a-kind gift for attendees!" And to top it all off, it is COMPLIMENTARY for both fan club members.

How cool is that?

I know that I have a lot to criticize Disney for, especially regarding the missed opportunity with choosing to replace rather than upgrade this ride; but I have to give them this one.

I will likely be there for that weekend, so I will likely try to get a ticket. (The reservations open August 1 at 10 a.m. PACIFIC Standard Time, which is 1 p.m. Florida time.)

And I was even a little cynical when I read about it, wondering what the price would be? $250 $150

No, they actually are making this completely free to fan club members. It is at 7:15 in the morning, before the park opens, and they are NOT requiring park admission (unless you choose to stay after the event).

I wonder if TCM is really opening the floodgates for this? Or if they felt like they just needed to do something for the fans. Not sure, but I have to say this is a nice gesture.

(I almost chose not to post it here because I don't want it to "sell" out before I can get a ticket -- but I knew I was wrong not to share it here. I would have wanted you all to let me know, so I am doing the same.)

Wow, that's great.

To mark the closing of The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney is producing some special commemorative merchandise before the attraction fades to black on August 13th.

The merchandise will be released at Walt Disney World late next week, while some of it will be available online through the Disney Parks online store starting August 10th, 2017.

Runaway has to be viewed in the context of what it is replacing. It is replacing a unique, AA heavy dark ride.

I fully agree that screens can be invaluable tools if deployed in conjunction with other effects. But Runaway seems like to be very, very screen reliant. They've also chosen versions of the characters that make character-based AAs physically impossible.

Hopefully, they'll keep some of the AA's; especially the entire Munchkin & Road to Oz sets. They should be able to incorporate all of the figures into the 'Runaway Railway'. The perfect connection is this scene from 'A Christmas Story' that I posted in a similar thread:

The new '2.5 D' effects should work seamlessly and be a great tip of the hat to the GMR !

This really annoys me. "Sure, we're killing a great ride to save money, but we can still profit off the affection for the ride we don't care about at all!"

There aren't going to be any AAs in the new ride - the '2.5 D' nonsense means there'll be some plain, pure white background shapes that have things projected on them.

I've been dreaming of this FOREVER! I'm probably biased because I'm a huge fan of Indy lol. Maybe Indy is not what Disney thinks the majority want though. Sad if that's true.

The Ride is already "Great", why are they even closing this ride? They should've closed Star Wars Launch Bay, a temporary attraction that takes up too much real estate.
Plus, they could use it to promote The New Mary Poppins Movie, wouldn't that be common sense?

And why are they using the 2013 Disney Channel designs?

I have no idea and I haven't read any good ones either. Best case scenario, people just enjoy the newness of something in DHS and then it becomes very dated when the show stops airing. "Mickey Through the Years" with this new Mickey at the end would be relatively futureproof and relatable to all ages.

Reminds me of the merchandise that Disney put out leading up to the closure of DCA's Tower Of Terror for Mission: Budget Overlay. Nice shirts but all it does is remind me of their dumb decision to close it.

Now that I think about it, was Disney involved with that scene from A Christmas Story?
