You are missing a good deal of nuance. Cloth masks aren’t useless. They just aren’t good enough to completely stop spread. But they are better at preventing spread than nothing at all. We see how Omicron spreads at large, unmasked parties. It doesn’t spread that much in classrooms and those kids are mostly wearing cloth face masks. So it is limiting spread even if it doesn’t completely stop it. 3 sick kids is better than 18 sick kids. We also need actual adults in the room. If 10% of staff is out, a school can work with that. If 50% are out? No school for a week. Or more.

Most parents are unaware of just how dire the staffing situation is in schools as it is.
Columbus City Schools (not where we go but major city near me) is closed today due to staff shortages I believe transportation only though. These shortages are a real threat and why some are back at virtual schooling now.

My school district just handed out KN95s but they were mass produced in China and fit very poorly. Open your mouth and they are off your nose. Try teaching like that.

Completely useless
Those would be. I haven't found well fitting KN95s so I use surgical instead - well fitted too. That's what I send my kid to school with as well.

It’s all hands on deck here. Any adult can be a sub. Like, the principal’s administrative assistant “taught” Algebra II yesterday.

High School is basically a babysitting service this month.

Not in my district. I have a bachelor's degree and it isn't enough to be one. I keep saying to myself I need to get through the process to become one but I haven't found time yet.

Edit to clarify: I need to apply for a license after getting my transcripts. Then once I have my license I can apply for the region to be a sub and then submit to my district. I probably should work on my transcripts now though by the time this surge is over I might not be as needed. They did suspend needing a bachelors degree this year for the license but you still need to apply.

Anyone still requiring masks during Omicron is a fool. Doctors and scientists have already said anything but N95 essentially does nothing to stop Omicron, so it’s a waste to force it on people now. Omicron is going to push COVID into endemic territory, which should an end to all of these ridiculous mandates we’ve been living under the last 2 years.
Mandates such as...?

Same here. Our high school is asking for any parents who want to to be substitute teachers right now. Yet masks are optional and school is still 100% in-person. Going to distance learning for 2 weeks right now would be a godsend, but for whatever reason, our district is too stubborn to do it. That said, I'm not a fan of full distance learning. Our kids don't do well with it, not enough structure at all, and that's the same story we've heard from at least half the parents we've talked to (either in person or virtually) in the past year.

Against Omicron they are, for all intents and purposes, useless. It is ridiculously transmissible and I'm not even sure a properly fitted N95 will help with a long enough exposure in a poorly ventilated space.

Any mask is better than no mask but some still try to push the narrative of them being useless and questioning the N95 mask.
Scientifically define "better" specifically for the Omicron variant. How much less likely does it make you to be infected if you are standing in the indoor part of the FoP queue for an hour in front of an infected person when you are both wearing cloth masks vs. if neither was wearing any mask. Again, specifically the Omicron variant which is for all intents and purposes the only variant you will come across at WDW.

We are discussing the WDW mask policy in this thread so this is a relevant discussion.

Any means of limiting the spread of droplets aka any mask is better than no mask but some try to keep pushing the narrative masks are useless.

It is simple to define better. the N95 have two bands to assure a tight fit in two directions. The N95 fit tighter around the nose and mouth with a tight seal and the filter media only allows a very certain size and amount of total particles through until they need be replaced. The N95 work better in or Omicron because Omicron has about 1000 times MORE viral particles by a factor of 1000 so a tighter fitting better filter media filter are needed because of that.

Depends on how much of a limiting factor said mask presents
If it's essentially nothing, what's the point?
In life, we don't engage in basically useless exercises when the gain is little and the inconvenience is large.
