Disney Hollywood studios worth $94 a day?

Think of Parks and Resorts almost as retail business. Retail is a tough business. Anytime you're dealing directly with consumers, margins are generally low...unless you're Apple.

HP, for example, has about 3-5% margins on the PCs they sell to consumers. Absolutely dreadful.

So then isn't Disney's 10-15% pretty good? Not trying to be a prick, just want to understand :)

Better than HP, yes. Computers are commodity, with parts being sourced from the lowest bidder. It's one of the toughest, lowest margin business.

Disney at least has some pricing power because they own proprietary content you can only see at Disney. This allows them to have control over how much they can get people to pay to see their content. However, with the enormous fixed costs of running a theme park, margins will generally be pretty low. I'm comparing this to higher margin business like Microsoft enjoys with software licensing deals with other big companies to use their products.

Compare Parks and Resorts margins to TV margins Disney enjoys from ESPN and ABC. Media networks had 34% operating margin and Parks and Resorts was 15% in 2013. Parks and Resorts margins were a record high and mostly attributable to getting more butts in the park. Fixed costs are really high, so they try to pack them in and upsell you when you get in the park. That's where the dinner packages, special seating, tours, etc really pay.

Apple is one of the few companies than can both charge a premium to customers and make high margins for a commodity like a cell phone because you want Apple, even with subpar hardware.

I'm actually one of the few it seems that likes DHS but I think alot of my love for it comes from what it use to be. Star Tours is one of my favorites too. With that said, unless for some reason I happen to only be at Disney for a day, I would never pay for a one day ticket for any of the parks. Just not smart money decision if you are there for multiple days.

"Worth" is so subjective. Every person will have a different level of perceived value they get out of it. For me, I'd never pay $376 for my family to go here for one day, plus food, etc. However, as an option available on our 6 day parkhopper tickets it is. That would bring it down ~$64/day. But the value we get from the other parks and being able to switch parks when we want is worth it to us.

Well, depends on who you are. To my wife and I none of the parks are worth the single day admission price. But, we are locals and have passes. So we feel like through the year we get the full benefit out of the AP price. I would never do single day though.

I know I'm probably one of only a few, but I still enjoy DHS. ToT and RnRC are two of my favorite rides in all of WDW, Star Tours is always a bit different which makes it fun, and BatB Live on Stage and Voyage of the Little Mermaid are both pretty nice stage shows, although at least one of them should receive an update soon. GMR and TSMM are also both must dos for my family. Should DHS get more entertainment? Definitely yes. Is it ok for now in my eyes? Yes.

There is absolutely NO WAY that this park is worth almost $100 dollars a day now.
It really wasn't even worth it before they took away Backlot and American Idol.

I really feel bad for families that have never been before, (not having park hopper) expecting this park to be a full day experience. What a ripoff!

Not to mention, this park now only has 5 rides....5!!!!! (Two of which are rollercoasters which cuts out small children and more mellow riders)

Disney REALLY needs to adjust pricing (which I know darn well they never will) until they can build this park back up into what is rightfully deserves to be!

None of the parks are worth $100 a day...they only make sense to me once you hit the cliff. We took a 5 day trip, adults only trip in September, which is a few days less than we usually spend, and we almost skipped HS for a third day at MK (Skipped PH for the first time). We decided at the last minute to do HS on a MNSSHP day and do the party at night.

As a local without an AP, if, for some reason I decide I want to go the DHS tomorrow, it's $94.

Last time I was there was for the grand opening of ST2.0. Then again, last time I wanted to go was for the grand opening of ST2.0.

No. This park is not worth a single day ticket, and most definitley not 94$.

However. I think this park has a lot to offer to people who are not annual pass holders or go often.

I only visit WDW every 2-4 years, so naturally when I go I book a longer vacation and visit every park. I think DHS still has much to offer to the occasional visitor in search for memories/nostalgia. But getting back to the point, no its not worth that much per day. It just doesnt focus on the "hollywood" feel like it should be doing. It also lacks any real pull for people to line up there. Disney needs to kick it into gear and get something amazing at DHS.

That I can indulge my Star Wars obsession by riding Star Tours over and over and over is worth it for me. But then I'm an AP, so my ticket is already covered....

Speaking of Star Wars, heard an interesting tidbit on NPR earlier this week. For those of us who have been praying and/or begging (yes, I sent a begging e-mail to the "contact us" e-mail address) Disney will release the original theatrical versions on Blu-ray, guess what? Disney doesn't own the copyright to the first film. Apparently, in order to get the backing, i.e. financing and distribution, dear old George gave Fox the copyright for the film in perpetuity. Which means Disney can release Empire and Jedi in original theatrical but not the first movie. So I guess this means Han will always shoot second... And if you cannot do the original theatrical versions in a boxed set on Blu-ray, Disney will say "why bother". It is a sad day in the Force. :(

Like posted most folks do multi day tickets which really adjust the cost per park. I would not pay $94 just for a single day trip as we go yearly. But if I were a once every 5 year goer or so then yeah I would pay $94 to go to DHS. I don;t really get hung up on the number of rides as I enjoy the eating, shopping and drinking as well. And they have some killer shows as well.

Definitely not.

I recently was there on my last vacation. I did the three day for 139$ and I'm so glad we didn't go on one of our full days to Hollywood Studios. We went on the day we were leaving. There was really nothing to do there.
I only enjoyed the Toy Story Mania ride, which I love! But the park really needs some serious upgrades.

I would be really curious to see how many single-day tickets are actually sold each year for the 4 parks.
I would guess that Magic Kingdom sells a lot, EPCOT a fair number (due to festivals) and the other two far, far less.

And I would imagine the EPCOT after 4 pass is also popular, otherwise Disney wouldn't offer it.

Neither Hollywood nor Animal Kingdom are worth a full day so thus are not worth $90+. Just got back last week from running Tower of Terror 10 Miler. We are both DVC and AP. We visit WDW 6 to 8 times a year. My husband and I used to really enjoy an early dinner at Brown Derby then watching the finale of American Idol. This was the first visit for the rest of my running buddies. There just isn't much to do at Hollywood Studios; especially since the closing of American Idol and Backlot Tour. We got FP+ for Toy Story (they really like that). But could only ride once given the FP limits and lines. Then you can only get a FP+ for either Tower of Terror OR Rock n Roller Coaster. We watched Beauty and the Beast and Lights! Motor! Action! then Fantasmic and that was it. The rest of the day, we just wandered. Downtown Disney is a mess (but it will be great when done). Our APs will not be renewed until there are a lot more attractions. Just no longer a good value for us. Until then, we will branch out within central Florida and explore off-property. And that's a good thing.
