Disney Giftcard?

Have any of you ever used the Disney giftcard at WDW? We were thinking of getting one and adding $ every payday as extra spending for the trip. On the website it seems to look like you can use it for anything, even paying for resort reservations. I was curious to opinions by anyone who has used it. Any problems with it, etc.? It seems great and a way to control your spending while there.

we were looking into getting 2 of these for our children's spending money at disney, but there were a couple of drawbacks

1. you can't reload them over the phone or the computer
2. you can only use indside of disney world and disney store, etc..., they can't be used for dowtown disney shopping

we are looking into getting these prepaid mastercards that they sell about everywhere, but i want to make sure there are no hidden fees. we just don't want to be carrying about the kid's money. dh likes to keep cash on him insted of using cards, so we will alreay have 2 separate cash envelopes for us, one for food one for misc. items

i just want the kids to be able to buy from wherever they want. i have already told them that they are limited to one shirt bought inside of disney world and then we will go downtown to the outlets for cheaper ones. they are 3 and 6 and get this concept. they both love clothes so this will be what they spend the majority of their money on.

please let me know what everyone thinks of pre-paid mastercards!

We used both on our last trip. I bought 4 Disney cards about 6 months before our trip, and every month I would go the Disney store and add $10.00 to each - those were DD's money to spend as she saw fit. I didn't want to have all her money tied up into one card in case it got lost.
On the pre-paid Visa cards, make sure you get the kind you can reload. We made the mistake of getting the non-reloadable ones (AAA was out of the reloadable); ran into many problems trying to buy something that cost more than what was left on the card - won't let you pay the difference in cash or combine with another card. DD also got a couple of those for Christmas gifts, so now we have 3 of them with very small balances that will probably never get spent - just more money in the pocket of the corporation, I guess!!

We just got back Tuesday night. I miss it already. Each of my kids had their own disney gift card to spend as they saw fit. The woman at the Disney store said they could only be loaded with more money at the Disney store itself. I couldn't do it over the phone or computer. The kids were able to spend it all over Disney, even in Disney Quest at the food counter. The only problem we ran into was when we were viewing Wishes, and my daughter wanted a twirling, glowing, Mickey from one of the vendor stands, they couldn't take the card. I came up with the cash for that one.
As for those Visa cards, I've had a couple over the past two years, and both times, it was a big hassle for the sales clerks to ring up. They all had problems, requiring 3 clerks and about 20 minutes to check out. I wouldn't recommend them.
Have a great time! Kris:wave:

The two times I've used the pre-paid Visa debit cards, I haven't had a problem. They were both ordered through the company that owns the local mall (Simon Malls). The first one was ordered through their website and came personalized with my name and a message line (I put "Disney Trip 2004" on it).
The next year, I found that if you get the card directly from the customer service desk at the mall, the fee was only $1.50 as opposed to $5-6 through the mail. The only drawback is that it came pre-imprinted with "Simon Mall Customer" (I did have one CM at a register ask why the signed name didn't match "Mr. Customer's" name on the front.)

The *one* time I had a problem was when my card came up insufficient funds, and I hadn't thought I'd used up my balance yet. Turns out, I had made a purchase the day before and forgot to tell the cashier that I wanted hotel delivery until afterward. He cancelled the entire transaction and re-rang the sale. Well, the first transaction was treated like a return with a credit to the card, but it took a couple days for the credit to go back on the card, holding up part of the balance in the meantime.

For my upcoming trip, I'm saving using the Disney Gift Card. I'll have to see how it goes. I've got $300 on there so far.

Oh, and a tip for those who might want a choice in their card design, as opposed to the basic Mickey design available at the stores: Go to the *Disneyland* website and order one through there. You can only order it in one of three pre-set amounts (25, 50 or 100, I think) but they're available in about 8 designs and shipping is free. Plus, they can be reloaded at the Disney Stores, too.

Lastly, for the poster who is stuck with small balances on multiple pre-paid debit cards. You can use them at a retail store, just tell the clerk at the register that you want to use two different methods of payment. First have them charge the exact amount left on the pre-paid card, and then pay the rest with your normal card or cash. Most major retail stores are able to do this. (But I'd give the clerk a break and only clear out one card per visit... I don't think they'd be too happy having to deal with four cards and four different amounts) :)
Unlike most gift cards where the register cleans the card out if the balance is less than the total, if you just hand the cashier the card, the register's trying to put the entire bill on the card and the system is declining it. THey have to specifically only charge the exact balance to the card.

Last time I was there, most of the stores in the Marketpalce at DTD accepted the gift card. Has this changed recently? I had a great experience with the gift cards the last time I was down there.

i was there in feb and had one for my 12 yold daughter and every day put some pocket money onit for her so she had her spending money, and dint have to carry cash with her.we got the small one from blizzard beach, which is about half the size and has a wrist lanyard onit to secure round the wrist!
it was perfect she didnt carry cash , couldnt lose it and was water proof! great.
i topped up everyday at the disney shop in out resort (asmovies) and she could spend it any where including all the disney shops at dtd and the cart stalls for soda and ices.
then when we came home stuck it in the scrapbbok!

We were there in December and the gift cards were all we used - everywhere! Food, shopping, etc. (Except when we needed a frozen banana from one of the carts!) We didn't have any trouble with it and it was nice not to have to carry a lot of cash!

We used one we got as a gift last month and I think it can be used at any "Disney" type place. We ended up using at the Character Outlet at the mall and they had no problems with it. Same holds true for the Disney Rewards card (money back on Chase Disney Visa), it was accepted all over.

I like the idea of giving the kids each there own card. We have for the last couple of years give the kids so much money to spend, but we have just had the money or charged it to our card (to earn Disney points) and just had them keep track of it.

Great! I think I'm going to use this then and then just plan on having a bit of cash for any cart buying. I'm glad to hear so many good stories about the gift card

they are a great idea.i wished we had them over here in england so kids go use them in our shops! i could control the spending then !
I know there is Disney Store in the Orlando airport. You could maybe exchange some money there for the kids before you even get to the park. Just a thought.....

Using the Visa( or any other Gift card with a credit card logo) is very simple if you have a cashier who knows what they are doing. If you don't know your balance, they should just call the number on the back and get it. If the purchase is for more than the balance, all they have to do is enter the balance before they hit the credit card key. Then you pay the difference.
