Disney Ducks- Do they annoy you?

Now, we all know that ducks are abundant in WDW. Do they really annoy you? Do you mind? Do you LIKE having them around?

I remember last summer, when my brother and I were at Flametree BBQ. They were everywhere in the seating area, making my brother really uncomfortable. They were relentless- going under chairs, and being generally crazy.

Thoughts on the ducks?

Actually no thoughts at all. I love them and love having them around me. I find these creatures to be silly and smart. I had a trained duck as a house pet for years that was actually paper trained for those time we could not get him outside in time. Use to sit on my shoulder when it was half grown to watch TV with me. The cats liked him and the dog had no issues either. It 's a to each his own sort of thing. :animwink:

I usually find most of the ducks to be cute and funny. I will say that the other birds, specifically the ones in Frontier Land can be quite the opposite. Eating something outside around the walkway where Pecos Bills is results in massive swarms of birds circling around you; sometimes even making attempts at grabbing out of your hands.

I think I'm biased against the Disney ducks because of a bad past experience. When our boys were babies we lived in a townhouse complex that had tons of the Muscovy ducks that other residents would feed on their back patios. Over time the ducks got totally greedy & even demanding. If you had your sliding door shades open to let in the light during the day packs of those nasty ducks would come onto the patio & tap the glass with their bills to try & get you to come feed them. I never fed them & found them to be a nuissance because they'd p00p all over the patio. I couldn't let the boys play with their toys out there which got on my nerves. So when I'm at Disney or anywhere & birds or ducks (especially muscovies) come around they annoy me & gross me out. I just want their nasty, poopy selves to go away. Lol!

The only experience I've had with a duck at Disney is one time we were taking a short break eating some ice cream and a regular everyday duck was hanging out behind us. For some reason that I still do not know my cousin freaked out saying things like--Oh COOL a duck--Isn't that the greatest thing?--It's so cute!. I was like, "It's just a duck." She lives in Wisconsin...it definitely wasn't the first time she ever saw a duck

I think I ALMOST killed one at Pop Century one morning a few years ago.

I had thrown out some bread for this duck that was quacking outside our door one morning during our March 2007 trip and he proceeded to gulp it down quickly. After doing so, he started acting real weird. He kept stretching his neck out and opening his mouth up, like it was stuck in his throat or something. Well, my kids and I started running around panicking because we thought we were witnessing this poor duck's last moments on Earth when it struck me to try and get him to drink some water to help wash it down, or at least help soften it and break it up in his throat. So I grabbed one of our styrofoam cereal bowls from the table and ran over to the sink to fill it with some water while the kids stood with the door open making sure he was still outside our room. I ran it over to the door and placed it on the walkway outside our door and told the kids to back away from the door so that we wouldn't scare him. He kept trying on his own for another minute or so and then noticed the water and waddled over and started gulping it down. He threw his head back after a few drinks and started to act normal again before finally waddling away.

Talk about a nervous moment or two! :hammer:

Ducks are far and few compared to the rabbits that come out at night.

Do the resorts put out traps to try and catch the rabbits or something? I noticed these black, plastic traps hidden in the bushes outside our room at Pop Century the last couple of trips and figured it was to catch rodents or rabbits (was SERIOUSLY hoping it was rabbits and not rats though). :ROFLOL::shrug:

I don't mind ducks at all usually, but the Disney ducks are annoying and demanding because of the people that feed them. I've noticed they're especially bad at Casey's and Flame Tree. They're out there to harass people for french fries and they just won't stop.

Those would be rodent traps. They must be working though because I've yet to see a single rat. Now a Mouse, yes. :animwink:

They really don't bother me unless they are being feed from nearby table or if they are close to being on my table (which they have been). I have to say though, if I were a duck, this is the place where I would want to live!

The ducks at Flame Tree are overly aggressive because of all the stupid humans that feed them [you know who you are!]. I find a well placed firm push with my shoe convinces them that my food isn't worth it.

raven is correct, those are for rats, or more specificly, warf rats, which can be as large as a small dog up here in jersey.

one thing i never seen in wdw is cockroaches. although their are known as ____________ (rednecks,.. errr, i meen southerners fill in the blank) in the south, i forget the name, i remember when i was a ranger in the military on base in GA, they would come out of the bushes in the evening and be as big as salt shakers, hundreds of them.

P.S. Just kidding about the rednecks comment, i was born in tn and have brothers and other family in alabama.

I don't mind but my wife hates birds in general. We can't even go into any of the aviary areas at zoo's or Animal kingdom for that matter because she freaks out. With that being said we were eating at the flame tree last year and were getting swarmed with ducks walking under our table and demanding food. We wouldn't give them any and i think they can sense fear or something cause they kept going for my wife and one actually pecked and bit at her leg. She screamed and everyone looked at us. I just kept eating like nothing happened.

On his first visit DS was scared by a white Eget (sic). DS was eating popcorn by the rivers of America and the bird wanted to share. Now whenever DS sees one at WDW he 'shoos' it away.

Some very funny comments on the wildlife! We have not feed any of these, but did try to leave the MK one time during a parade, when we got to Main Street, we saw a duck waddle into a store and we looked at a CM and he just shook his head and said that that particular duck owned the store! We had a great laugh and moved on. At one time, on the Magnolia course, on hole 17, we were around 150 yards out and my wife was addressing her ball while a bunch of turkey hens walked up to her golf ball (I luckily had the video going!) and my wife started shooing them away in filipino! I had a great laugh and now a great video!

Oh lawd, last year, on the last day of August, I was going back to the Boardwalk from Le Cellier. As I was walking over that humpish intersection-thing between France, the UK, and the International Gateway, on this white lamppost thing, there were about seven of the biggest cockroaches I had ever seen. They were HUGE. I almost miscarried a food baby. :lookaroun

OT: I like the ducks. I love ducks. I'm a duck person. I don't mind them d__________g around.

Surreal as this is, I always take pictures of the ducks in Disney World. Me and my dad laugh about it because no matter how hard you plan for things (like the immaculate sculpting of the landscape) there's always something you can't control. At WDW it's ducks in the moat, or the fantasmic stage, or the world showcase etc.
