Disney Dollars

We used to love giving the kids Disney Dollars throughout the year that they could save up and use at the parks. Now we just get small amounts on gift cards and then bring them.

My hubby and I have been going to the Disney Store about once every two to three weeks since we booked our upcoming anniversary trip. We will buy a gift card with 20-50 bucks on it each time. Now, when we leave in ten days, we have almost 500.00 in spending money ready to go.

I like that you can use them absolutely anywhere. VERY convenient.

We used to buy them and get them as gifts through the year so that we had money we had to wait to use at Disney. There's no Disney Store here now, but I also thought I heard that they were going to start discontinuing them. [shrugs]

FYI, you can add money onto your existing gift cards, you don't have to keep buying a new card each time. The cards can hold a maximum of $1500.

If you don't want the generic Mickey design (which was all my local store had available, last time I was in there), you can also order many more designs online (with free shipping, I believe), which can also be recharged at your local Disney Store.

We are thinking of buying the kids each one as part of their Christmas gifts this year so that they would each have some spending money for our March 2011 trip. We got kind of spoiled last year when we went because we received the $200 free gift card when we booked our package and just gave them that.

This is something you have given me advice before, and silly me needs to REMMEMBER to do this to the cards I have already purchased! Thanks for this reminder!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't even sell them anymore unless you still have them in your possession. I thought they stopped selling the DD about 3 months ago?

We got the Disney card during the F&W festival to use at all the booths and it was awesome! So the Disney Gift Card is good at restaurants too? Even the Signature ones?

Disney Gift Cards can be used at any Disney owned-and-operated restaurant on-property, which is about 95%+ of the on-site restaurants. I'm sure even the non-Disney-operated restaurants in the parks (such as World Showcase) or the hotels take the gift cards.

Most of the problem restaurants would be ones in Downtown Disney, etc.

Worst-case scenario, you could charge something to your room account, and then use a gift card to pay down the balance back at the hotel. (I think this actually would work at some places in Downtown Disney, like Ghiradelli, where they take room charges but I don't believe they take Disney Gift Cards).

I'm really sad that they've done away with the Disney Dollars. The gift cards are nice for kids who can add & subtract, but we had a problem with my 5-year old niece not understanding "You only have $3.00 left on your card, and this toy costs $20.00." If she had actual dollars in her hand, she would have had an easier time tracking her spending money.

BTW, my grocery store started carrying Disney gift cards, so every week when I'm doing my shopping I throw a $25 card into the mix. It's an easy and painless way to save up and I've probably got half my October trip covered already.

Disney Dollars are alive and well! I got some at City Hall last week in the Magic Kingdom...fresh and crisp. Every year the design changes, and there are several web sites following the evolution of the notes.
