Disney Dining Options while NOT on the Disney Dining Plan

Hi, all. It's been a while. I have just gotten through my WDW withdrawals from my April trip. Why do some of us have a hard time looking at anything Disney once we get back from our trip. It's like a depression. lol.

Anyway, my wife and I had purchased the dining plan each of our last three trips. For this trip, we thought it was ludicrous for us to spend over 800 dollars on the dining plan for ourselves and out 8 year old since we do not spend that much on food in a month at home. We assumed we could eat cheaper and eat less (dining plan offers too much food) if we paid out of pocket. Now, let me say that it had been about 5 years since we did not utilize the dining plan. Let me tell you, prces have gone through the roof. For my wife and I, and my 8 and 2 year old at counter service locations with my wife and I and kids sharing a drink cost, minimum 38 bucks! Unfathomable. Now, let me say, I know I am in a controled environment nd the price will be higher. But, goodness, the quality of most quick service places is horrid. Cosmic Ray's cost us just under 39 dollars for lunch and the quality was on par with a school cafeteria lunch. Now, this was not the worst. We stayed at CBR and one evening, after a day of allowing the kids to play at the pool, we decided we would eat in the food court. So, I ordered my son a pizza kids meal. That was 7.99, after all, it came with a really cool dollar store bucket. Anyway, the pizza, no kidding, was the size of saucer, no more than 4 inches in diameter. For 7.99.

Now, I love WDW as much as anyone, if not more. I have been addicted since I was 6, but this was the first time I could say I was angry at WDW and taken advantage of for the sake of profit. I won't complain about the cost of admission, you get much value for the cost of admission in WDW, in my opinion. I know some of you think park quality has dropped (i don't disagree,) but I reallyfeel I get value for the cost of admission. However, I feel like the cost of food and the ridiculous souvenirs are total rip offs and takes advantage of people.

Now, I have read comments from people on this board who claimed that the drop in quality and pricing was to force everyone to pay upfront for the dining plan and I always thought they were paranoid. Now, I agree. I live in New Orleans, I can dine in a 5 star restaurant with a world renowned chef at the helm and enjoy the finest food in the world and pay between 28 and 40 dollars per entree. But, I can go to WDW and eat in a table restaurant where the food is frozen and of lesser quality and the chef is still in college earning his/her culinary degree and pay, wait for it, 8-40 dollars per entree. Makes me sick. I mean, really is an rip off when you compare the quality and price. So, Yes, next time we go, we will get the dining plan because I spent just as much had I gotten the plan and only ate in table restaurants 3 times. Leson learned.

What do you all think??

What do I think?

First of all, I have been avoiding this board for almost a year because I didn't have a trip planned, so I understand your depression.

I will be going to WDW in September and it will be my first time not using the dining plan.

I have never looked at the price side of the menu. It will be interesting to see if I feel the same way you do. The cost of everything there is high and I felt like the DP kept me blind to some of it.

As far as you living in NOLA, one of the best meals of my life was at Jacques Imo's for a reasonable price, so I sympathize.

i honestly am torn in this . if its free, or i can afford to add it, i get it. if not my choices do not change. depending on your eating habits and choices, its cheaper to do the plan then do it on your own. its really complicated.

Your conundrum illustrates exactly what's wrong with the DDP, and how it's driven up the prices of food property-wide. Once upon a time, there was great variation among the price of food at various WDW restaurants. Popular places charged more than the less popular ones. However, even less popular places like Shutters had people eating there, because they were significantly cheaper. Since the advent of the dining plan, prices have gone up everywhere, to the point that just about every 1 credit restaurant will cost around the same per person. Same thing for two credit restaurants (Victoria and Albert obviously excepted). They all must charge the same so that no one feels like they're either getting ripped off or getting a better deal. And no one is going to book an ADR at Shutters when for the same price, they can eat at 'Ohana.

IMHO this is why the DDP is so popluar and the precise reason free dining is so popular. How do you place a complaint about free food? LOL Disney is SMART! ;) Free dining drives up the crowds and makes you feel guilty about complaining. ROFL

After seeing the prices for anything recently in Manhattan, seeing a tee for $30 in Panama City and the prices for food at a Braves game I can tell you that the prices at WDW are not that bad! Compared to buying your own? Sure but you're on vacation in a vacation spot, prices are going to soar.

I need to agree here - you are comparing vacation spot prices with your relatively cheap home town prices. Here in Boston, $8 for a kids pizza meal isn't crazy. Go to a Red Sox game and an $8 anything would be a bargain. Personally, I find the food at WDW of excellent quality with excellent options. I can always find something fresh and healthy. I'm paying slightly more, maybe 10% more, than I would pay at my local Panera or Chipotle (comparable quality to WDW quick service, IMO) at home but thats because I'm at a theme park resort and not the local shopping mall.

It's counter service...the food is not gourmet...It's Disney...its going to be expensive...go to any theme park..food is astronomical

I don't buy the DDP is the devil...people with the dining plan are eating the same food those that dont...counter service equates to fast food which is not healthy nor tasty

I am a DDP advocate..not from a OMG we are saving money...or I'm Going to eat like I'm doing a cameo in the life of Brian...simply because I like the options available and I prefer a fixed costs vs a fluctuating one

Not sure where in Manhattan you're eating but having (until about an hour ago, incidentally) been a local, there are plenty of places to get a nice, inexpensive, meal. You just need to venture away from the touristy Times Square area and be willing to try something other than Applebee's.

Never do WDW w/o the DDP. I learned that the hard way! Also- the QS dining plan is OK, but you like a nice table service now and then. We wanted to do a TS, but couldn't get a table! Lesson Learned!:( I just think that if you know how to ADR, and book the more expensive meals, such a buffets or a signature, it's well worth its cost. You really do save at least 20%. IMHO.;)

I live in NYC as well and not in a touristy section but even at a cheap pizza place on the island you are going to pay at least 3.50 for a soda and a slice. Don't the kids plates at Disney also include fruit and another side?

I just spent 11 dollars on breakfast and all I got was a soda, two bagels, and a pastry. I am not anywhere near the "touristy" area of NYC and I went to my local mom and pop bagel shop.

Also comparing non-vacation spot prices to a Disney vacation is pointless. As others have mentioned go to any vacation spot and you will see crazy price increases. I went to the Bahamas 2 years ago and man I thought Starbucks in NYC was expensive believe me I had a second thought when I walked into the Starbucks at Atlantis and everything was 1 to 2 dollars more. Imagine a $6 tall latte. I could complain all day about what I pay for food and drink when I am on vacation. I hate paying over $2 on a bottle of soda but on vacation I have seen it as high as $4 and at ball games as high as $6.

First, we all have differing concepts of what is expensive. We've never used the dining plan as we're off site and we eat breakfast at our villa and either grill or eat dinner at an ouside restaurant. We do eat lunch at a TS restaurant and, as Mukta said, we don't look at the price. We're on vacation. We know it is going to be expensive but you should try the Westin in Hollywood, Florida. The cheapest steak on the menu was just short of $50 and everything was ala carte. Thankully, there was an American Legion nearby and I could get a burger off the grill and fries for $5.

Two years ago I got the dining plan for free and we decided to see if the cost was worth the price, so we keep every receipt for the week. After totaling up we found the price we would have paid for the dining plan was about the same as the cost. We never get desert without dining plan and of course it comes with the dining plan. So we believe its cheaper to not get the plan without a discount or free

With how much food is, plus the drink, plus dessert (and when we are in Epcot, we just can NOT turn down a dessert!!)....it adds up fast. We have gotten counter-service dining 3 out of 4 times were were there. The time we didn't get it, we ended up spending more. The only thing I don't like about adding the dining plan is that it puts you in a package with LESS flexible cancellation & date change options once you get close to your arrival date..... this is really the only draw back for my family (prob not a problem for everyone). Once you add the insurance, it kind of gets expensive and ends up costing us more than just a room reservation and food out of pocket....

The problem with this analogy is that you don't usually spend an entire week inside a theme park or a ballgame. It's one thing to get hosed for a meal or a snack. It's another to take it on the chin for every meal, snack or drink for an entire vacation.

My moms condo is directly accross the street next to Azia. Next time try LeTub up the block. It's supposed to have the best bugers in the country. At least according to Oprah :)

Its interesting to read an recent story about DDP vs out of pocket cost. Several years ago when deciding on whether to get the DDP or not I figured up how much it would be if we ate the same things out of pocket, and it was a little cheaper then to pay for the DDP. Now as the years have gone by each time DDP price has gone up and I have always been curious if the out of pocket food price has gone up as well. Its not really a good thing if they are both going up at the same time, but at least the DDP might be retaining its value.

Food quality wise, I think it depends a lot on what you get. I would expect the pizza at Cosmic Rays (really, any pizza in the parks in general) to be crap. When we go there, I get a burger and then pile it up with things from the toppings bar. That way, I get a little more for my money.

So DDP rant follows. The DDP is the reason we are all paying more OOP. Disney had to raise the prices of food to make people "think" that they were getting a good deal by buying the DDP. Most people find, if they save every receipt and add it up, that they barely saved anything (and some find it actually costs MORE!) by buying the DDP, but it was "convenient" to prepay. If Disney wouldn't have raised the prices so much the last few years, people would figure out that the DDP was costing them a LOT more than OOP, and not buy into the madness. /rant

We totaled our reciepts too and found the same thing (not on free dining). However, when we went back to look at what we would have actually ordered it would have been cheaper to pay out of pocket. We would not have ordered the most expensive meals and would almost never have gotten deserts. Once this was taken into account, the DDP actually cost us about $50 more per person.

I have done both and as a FL Resident and now an out-of-stater. Our solution this time - Club Level. We are people who do not stay in the parks from sunrise to late at night. We are people who start in early am - head back just at lunch - come back after 4. For us the cost of food at the Resorts Food Court is way more than the mear $25 per person per day to upgrade. We usually do 3 sit down meals the whole vacation.

I think the DDP is economical for those who eat a lot - otherwise its just too much food!
