Disney confirms 'Frozen' makeover coming to Epcot's Norway Pavilion

Someone must be asleep at the switch. I posted there multiple times, each time about my disappointment with this "Frozen" makeover of Maelstrom. Not one got posted, and not one was against their comment policy.

Maybe you should try again? Maybe the protests were so numerous and vocal that the Blog thought it best to "let it go"?

Yeah, so let's replace it with X2.. that will fix the problem. And why doesn't that work?? because no matter how bad maelstrom is.. it doesn't justify replacing it with 'anything'.

They aren't replacing it with Ratatouille or Stitch. They are replacing it with a film so appropriate for the pavilion, it was so obvious a fit that according to the posts above, even Jim Hill predicted it.

No it's a travesty to let Disney ruin stuff.. then say 'well they already ruined it.. so why not let them do more of it'. That's the travesty. I've not replied to your earlier posts about your theory of what people miscontrued WS to be because it's crap and not worth the effort. You're wrong.. deplorably wrong.

Every circlevision film.. and nearly every original pavilion proves you so wrong.. it's not even worth pointing out.

Travesty...deporably..."so wrong"...

Like I said, DRA-MA...

Yea, the songs I can't fit because the way I have it (the way the ride is built) is for adventure and action. So there is no time for 'do you want to build a snowman', first time, open door..let it go...or the troll song. If they want those songs then I see the ride turning into the 'princess song ride'. I think I prefer how Peter Pan does it....they don't use all the songs; just the one main theme (you can fly) throughout the ride. I don't think let it go would work but 'first time' or any of the instrumentals would be good to use.

I was thinking of using the snow monster (Marshmallow....I GUESS I will call him...though I think it's a STUPID name and wasn't even used in the film :grumpy:) in the same place you are talking about...but it just comes too soon into the ride story..so I used the wolves.
Olaf calls him that name in one line and I'm pretty sure it's official.

So much drama, I feel like I have wandered next door to Mexico and into a location taping of a Mexican soap opera. ;)

The bottom line is, up until this week Maelstrom was easily in the running for the least-known moving attraction at WDW. Suddenly it's a travesty to lose it because of this on-going decades-running dissatisfaction that folks have about what they perceive the point of that section of the park is. I think that largely has been a built-up fan expectation, as Disney has done nothing to encourage that thought for decades - but then again, since the entire WS has been so completely stagnant except for restaurant-wars for decades as well, it's hard to tell what has been "lost".

I actually think the opposite about the ride. I never remember hearing that Maelstrom was a BAD ride. In fact, it was well liked enough that I don't recall it making it's way into the 'this ride must go' category anywhere. It's a simple quaint ride...slow enough to get the kiddies on without being too afraid but more 'thrilling' than the Mexico ride. It was original and different from other Disney rides and the lines were always long. Yes there were 20 minute waits but you go at the wrong time and the line would be as long as an Elsa/Anna wait. Is it the best ride ever? No, did it need some updates? sure. But I feel, only now, that people want to fight for a Frozen ride, is it now called mediocre.

ha, I'd have to watch the movie again because I don't remember that at all. I think I was still pondering why Anna would leave a total stranger to rule the kingdom while she left with no idea where to go...since she has never been outside the palace at that time. But since I don't like the movie I won't be re watching. :p

Blink, blink. Breathe, breathe. Day in, day out.
The best I've thought of is having the snow monster Marshmallow replace the three headed troll and screaming "DON'T COME BACK"!!!!!!!!! before you go backwards but other than that I've got nothing that would make sense in the rides current layout, especially if they want to include the songs.

I posted this on http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/predict-frozen-in-epcot.890118/page-2#post-6326031

It will probably just be an overlay..
Olaf's head greets you as you come on the chain lift, then you're in Arendelle and it's covered in snow then you pass by Anna who's going the direction you're going to look for Elsa. Doors open to reveal Elsa and Anna arguing and she strikes her with the magic sending your boat backwards, as you go backwards on your left side, the trolls are singing "fixer upper" and then, what used to be a waterfall is now the window of the room where olaf comes to help rescue Anna and get him to Kristoff. Then Olaf says "come, this way!" and you go down this small drop and there's a wall blocking two small scenes, one where Elsa is crying over Anna's frozen ice body, then it goes dark and you hear Olaf say "An act of true love thaws a frozen heart" dah dah dah dah dramatic music, final scene, waving as passengers go to the station (such as little mermaid) the end.

The overlaid attraction.

Although I like your marshmallow backwards sequence better! :3

Yup....replying to myself...

So I went and found the scene on Youtube and it seems that Olaf is making fun of him by calling him Marshmallow...not actually calling him by name....but I guess it every character has to have a name...Does that mean I can start calling Kristoff Sven now? :D

The current CEO is more a movie man. It's where he likes to invest big. Hence, the Star Wars deal, spending millions on flops like the Lone Ranger, John Carter from Mars, Prince Of Persia, etc - which incidentally have been some of the biggest flops and disasters in movie making history. He's just not a theme park guy. You see these people in your own family, who whenever you mention going to Disney, tell you tales of how they don't like rollercoasters and rides, etc - they just don't get it. The current CEO of Disney is that guy. He thinks it's just all rollercoasters and twirls, etc - he doesn't get it, there is no love for the parks from him. His bottom line is the $$$, and as long as the parks keeping bringing in money, with the trajectory pointing up he will continue on his merry way with his real passion - the movie business. Until Disney get a CEO, like they've had in the past, who has a love for parks, for tourism, etc there will be nothing.

I don't give a two hoots about the themeing, the whole Epcot's original idea - i am more interested in whether they build a first class attraction - and quite frankly if they can't be bothered to do anything with Frozen, then all hope is gone for the forseeable future that there will be any investment.

I'm guessing that Disney has gobs of data showing that Epcot has aging demographics and declining margins. They see in Frozen a single opportunity to create a demand and bring in a ton of families who might have skipped the park. And it will probably be a great attraction and do exactly what Disney wants with attendance....

I they fully realize it will forever alter the world showcase.

I doubt that this much thought went into the decision, actually, and I doubt that the decision-makers know or care enough about what WS is/was to have contemplated whether Frozen will "forever alter" it. This is simply the cheapest way to shoehorn the IP-of-the-moment into the parks as an attraction. I can't see it as anything more or less than that.

The reason it was so obvious is because we've started to expect this kind of crap from Disney. Don't fool yourself.

Love ya Mike, but unless they were building a brand new attraction on a brand new plot of land (which I think we all agree would have been preferable, though again, that wasn't enough for TLM), it really was the most logical place to go.

It's not that I don't think Disney is cheap. It's not that I'm not disgusted overall by the situation that they have allowed the parks to turn into. And it's not like I won't miss Maelstrom (quirky dark rides are why I love theme parks).

But...in this case...if you cut through all the WS baggage, they are doing several things folks have said they wanted - put more modern non-Pixar attractions in the park (specifically C/D dark rides) in particular - it's just that Disney is doing it in a place they don't like. It ain't perfect, but while I understand and believe that some folks are truly upset about the ride itself going away, as you are, a large portion of the folks jumping out of the woodwork on this I doubt have even ridden it this decade.

Characters are also all over WS, and have been for 30 of the park's 33ish years (thanks to the folks earlier who corrected me, the characters weren't there in '82 for a few more years when the Character Bus started, and character meet and greets have been there for decades as well). Folks are qualifying it now "well this is the first time in a ride (oh wait, Mexico)...well, the first fictional place (oh wait, Maelstrom already was a fantasy ride with fictional characters and locations)...well, the first time there is a fantasy ride with characters!"

That said - again - I am totally with you and understand your affection to the ride. My comments have been directed more towards the extreme hyperbole. I know the feeling - SWSA is derided by most but it was my absolute favorite ride anywhere ever. But now there is a ride that "sort of" replaced it in SDMT, and will probably be enjoyed by more guests (though I wish they would have kept both of course).

So really, I feel ya - I already have been searching out the best videos I can find since I won't be able to get down for a last ride. I'm not happy it's going away, and pointing out the more critical things about it isn't pleasant for me, because I do like it quite a lot - but...I feel like some folks posting who don't care as much about the ride itself are revising history just a bit already.
