... because we saw all those updates while they were a sponsor didn't we???

History proves... the only updates that come are with a lump sum change.. not just ongoing sponsorship. They'd have to fund an overhaul PLUS their ongoing sponsorship (see Imagination)
GM has been a pretty good sponsor... Depending on your view of WOM vs TT that is. I wish HP had the guts, or the ambition, to totally reinvent their attraction.

Sure if you are talking a complete refurb of the ride like Imagination or TT, I am simply talking about upkeep and maintenance to keep the attraction as close to its original identity (AA working, mold removal, no holes in the snow where the polor bears are, etc...) as possible.

If Norway didn't want to lose control over their pavillion, I think they could have coughed up some money. They did not and here we are.

Well, heck, why don't they just get rid of commercials on all their networks? They don't need that ad revenue, as they've already got plenty of money!

That's different. They don't need corporate sponsors. But I'm sure you think they do. Are you intentionally posting after me?

spirit, how can they expand queue into the north sea scene when that is the flume drop?

Your right. Aside from the constant squabble over the movie issue, Norway was given several chances to be involved again with funding, the government coldly said no in August to Disney's latest and final offer. Norwegian companies made an offer but for whatever reason Disney was not open to a deal without the support of the Norwegian government. In the coversation I had with those involved in the picture, we all agreed that it is pretty disappointing that a nation as rich as Norway and yet they wouldnt fund it. But its been years now of cold vibes between the two so its not surprising, just really disappointing.

While I agree it is a disappointment, I would not be so quick to jump onto ridicule. These kind of decisions are as much political as they are economical and since I do not know the political state of Norway currently I cannot jump on them too hard. They simply may have an elected body that views subsidized PR as not what the people want (that is what a government sponsored ride here in the states would be, right?). I can't say our (American) government here is always known for being smart

If that is too political I'll take a step back...times change...interests can as well.

Maybe Disney refused corporate sponsorship because Disney is no longer interested in the World Showcase concept, that last offer to the government being more for show. Anybody could see that Frozen would be the bigger immediate hit.

Let's be honest - none of those issues kept people away from the attraction. The content and lack of desire to re-ride it did. Even if it were maintained to tip top shape... It still would have been an under performing attraction that had no draw to the park.

The attraction needed an overhaul and update - and simply continuing the standing deal wouldn't have made that happen.

I could be wrong but I always thought Maelstrom was fairly popular, even in its last sad years. Of course this mostly because of the lack of other rides in World Showcase.

I do agree it needed a reimagining, but if Norway had kept their involvement with the pavillion it could have been reimagined with Norway's story instead of a story about a fictional princess. Frozen could have been kept out of World Showcase and maybe it would have got the E-ticket attraction it deserved at a more appropriate park.

Again Disney could have done the right thing without Norway's sponsership, so they are not totally off the hook, but when I see everyone ONLY blaming Disney, I just want to remind people of Norway's role in this disappointing situation.
