Disney buses, good or bad?

Here is my weekly blog. I would be curious as to your thoughts.

It seems that this mode of transportation will have just as many success stories as it does negative ones.

Disney has buses that will transport you from the parks to your resort and back. This is the main mode of transportation to get guests around the World. Check with your resort for up-to-date information. Buses traditionally run every twenty minutes or so thus providing guests with normally no longer than a half hour wait time at the most. Obviously if you are traveling during the peak seasons, the bus wait times may vary slightly. Buses will start their routes about an hour before each park opens and up to two hours after closing time. Again this varies from season to season. Buses also travel to Downtown Disney (DTD) and the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC) near the Magic Kingdom. If there is no direct link between where you are and your destination, you can take a bus to either location, and then make a connecting bus route. For example, Disney does not run buses from one resort to another, so you would need to connect at Ticket and Transportation Center or Downtown Disney. Another option is to take a bus from your resort location to a nearby park, then take a bus from that park to another resort.

With all this being said, the time of year you go may play a role in how frequently buses pick you up. If you are traveling at a non-peak time (February or September) there may not be as many buses on the routes as compared to a peak season like the summer or Christmas week. The problem with a peak season is that even if buses come more frequently, they will be more crowded. Many people think that if you stay at a deluxe resort the busing situation is better than at a Value resort. We have found that really it doesn’t matter where you stay. It is truly the luck of the draw. If you happen to be walking to your stop and a bus is there waiting for you every time, you lucked out. Another individual could go to the same stop that you do about 2 minutes after you are there and miss the bus every time and have to wait.

What happens is that each person is getting s different view/experience of Disney’s Transportation. The bottom line is that most of the time a bus will arrive about every 20 minutes. We have seen times where our wait has been more than 40 minutes and we have also seen times when as soon as a bus leaves, another one arrives going to the SAME place as the one that just left. I believe that you just have to relax, be glad that you don’t have to mess with the traffic, and enjoy your trip.

I have never had a really bad experience with Disney buses. I'm sure other people will tell you differently but I've been lucky I guess

I was worried about the busses on our most recent trip. We knew it was going to be busy during spring break and as we spent half our stay at the AKL we knew the journey's would generally be long.

However, apart from one slightly disasterous trip to the Poly via DTD the busses were fantastic. Occasionally we had to wait 20mns+ for the bus to turn up but the journey was alwas much shorter than expected. Only once did we have to wait for a second bus due to the line being so long.

During even our worst of waits I always thought that I much pefer this over the hastle of driving.

During our stay at WL I really enjoyed our boat transportation which is also a great success.

Having sung the praises of the bus system, I suspect it would be a different story if I was saying at the All Stars. The queues were always HUGE and sometimes had to wait for 4 busses to arrive! This would have definatly been a big disapointment for me if I were staying there.

So to sum up, I would definatly use the bus system again without question unless I was at the All Stars.

Personally, I love to ride the bus in the morning. It's like the first "ride" of the day. I have found that it is easier for us to drive our own car back in the evening. I hate waiting for the bus when the park closes. There is always a ton of people. We seem to do much better by heading to the car and driving back. We can be back to our room much faster.

Heading for the great escape.
As a mode of transport they are ok, I opt to drive as usually its more convenient than the bus. However If I intend to have a drink its great having that option.

as for the buses themselves, sorry I think they are junk, there are far better vehicles available and in use here.

We're staying at AKL this September and have decided to rent a car. We did the busses last time and thought it was a great service (except when we tried to visit or dine at other resorts). Because we'd like to enjoy spa treatments and dinner at other resorts this year, we went the route of rental car.

Has anyone else had a rental car at WDW? Is it a pain to park? Get around?

We have a car every year its never been a problem, and as you say if you are dining at other resorts its a real bonus.

It also means of course you are not stuck with on site restaurants and their deteriorating menus.

The bus system is what it is. As the OP said, if you walk out and there's a bus there, it's great. If you just missed, you just missed it. But considering what the bus system is designed to do, I think it works pretty well.

As for driving cars, that works well except at the Magic Kingdom, where when you park you're car, you are NOT at the park yet. But going to any other park, it works well, too.

During spring break this year, we were expecting the worst with the bus system, but it was actually great. One potentially disastrous wait at the MK bus stop to Pop one night was only 15 minutes because they would load three buses at a time for the one resort.

A necessary evil. Parks to resorts and vice versa is not too bad. Just don't try to go to Downtown Disney OR from resort to resort. Better to have a car in those situations.

They need more buses in the Yacht Club/Beach Club/Boardwalk route in the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. I remember in vacations past, the bus queue for the yacht/beach/boardwalk would get busy and hardly any buses would come to it, but tons of busses would serve the other hotels, like there would be 3-4 coming for carribean beach in the time it takes for a second bus to arrive for the yacht/beach/boardwalk

We never rush while at WDW. So the bus works fine for us. Yes it may get a little crowded when the parks close, oh well. I like not having to worry about driving while on vacation. Would a car come in handy sometimes when we're there, sure. But being on the bus adds to the Disney immersion, in a weird way.

Disney busses have always been grat on my trips. And any time I don't have to get behind the wheel, a little extra time is OK with me. Convenience is a big plus.

Just don't use the DTD point as a transfer. It is easily the most convoluded area with the most stops ever invented. :brick:

Yes, DTD is a mess when it comes to buses. There's just too many stop warea. I think one central stop for a ll of DTD right smack dab in the middle would be better than what is there now.

Overall the buses are what they are. Its not the greatest system in the world, and it definitely has its flaws, but in the end, it gets the job done.

Our experience with the transporation system, especially of the buses. However, DTD is hell when it comes to buses. Being alone in a middle of the parking lot secluded from the hustle and bustle is a little nerve-racking, also since the buses don't come as frequently. I personally love the buses despite this.

The bus system is very efficent, at least in our experience. However, we've never actually taken the bus to EPCOT Center, since we either stay at a monorail or Epcot Resort hotel.

There have been times when I have waited 15 minutes and 5 minutes. Coming home from MK we have alwaays just walked on a bus. The place where I have waited the most is DTD near Planet Hollywood. It looks like a dark alley over there but the wait sometimes has been long. We have also waited long at our hotel going to a park the has EveMH.

Y'know, it is really hit or miss sometimes.

Overall, I prefer the buses to driving, parking, gas...etc.

We used the bus system a few times while staying at the Yacht Club last summer. While I expected the worst, being it was my first time using the busses, I was very suprised by how well the system worked. The only unfavorable part I feel is how many people they cram into them when the parks close, it borders on the insane.

Even though we drive down, we still use Disney buses once we are on WDW property. Very convenient and we have never had to wait that long for one when staying at Pop during Canadian Spring Break (March). Had the same thing happen to us as a previous poster; huge line waiting for bus at MK one night to go back to Pop and they decided to bring 3 buses to take care of the situation. :sohappy:

The bus system is very good. We have never had a problem with the bus system. Of course you would like for the wait to be shorter but gosh that is not really a negative.

I have never had any problems with disney transportation. I find it very useful not having to use my own veichal (or a rental).
