Disney and Universal working on Marvel deal for Florida?

They can't upgrade or add anyhting Marvel without permission from Marvel. Which they won't get. Hence the stagnation of the rides and the walk around characters costumes.
According to whom? I've heard otherwise, and I believe that they can in fact add things with characters that they have the rights to. Any info on this @marni1971 ?

I'm a bit confused, how could Disney be preventing Universal from doing certain things with Marvel... What the attractions entail do belong to Marvel, but the property they are on is not Disney's. If that make sense...

The only rumor that I have heard over and over is the eventually re theming of Marvel Island to Wicked and with the film coming out next year...

There's no Wicked movie (assuming you're referring to the musical) coming out next year. Universal is developing an adaptation, but there's been no scriptwriter or director hired, much less any filming taking place.

Allow me to find the link explaining this...BRB

I'll save you some time. The contract stipulates that Marvel has a final "Yes/No" on all creative decisions in the land. That being said, they are also required to act in a reasonable manner in giving that yes/no. As long as Universal treats the characters well, Marvel can't just say no because they're owned by a new company now.

They can't say no because they are owned by Disney, true, but they can say NO...but "reasonable manner" is very vague and subjective. Lots of legal loopholes. Universal would have to go an arbitrator. Considering how popular Marvel is and all the money Uni has to burn, one would reasonably assume they have tried to expand, gotten a "No" and accepted it.

I don't see why it's so hard to even fathom Uni giving up the rights or them working out some deal with Disney, if that's even what this is. MSHI, apart from Spidey, is hardly all that impressive. Hulk is easily re-themed to something else. They can't use Marvel anywhere else anymore so why not just move on? I don't know why fans want to cling to IOA holding onto Marvel. They can do other things there and still keep Spidey.

I think a reason the Uni would want to hold on to at least some of the rights is that if they were to re-theme they would likely have to license another IP. Considering that this deal was struck back when Marvel wasn't anywhere near as popular at it is today, Uni is probably paying a bargain price to license what is currently one of the hottest IP's around.

Things are going to get.... interesting...

I'm assuming certain parts are a done deal, given what I've heard. And what's needed.

The Doom thing is the most interesting part for me. There's a lot of empty space behind Doom ripe for a new attraction. I would have to think Storm Force would have to go or at least be rethemed as X-Men is also a Fox cinematic property

Yes.

Spider-Man was completely redone after Disney's acquisition of Marvel, not to mention the Marvel Meet and Greet Characters received radically updated costumes around the same time.

Per the contract they had to upgrade Spidey to keep the rights. Plus the walkaround characters costumes also had to be updated to stay within the contracts demands. Uni paid Disney to design the new costumes.

The contract spells out "reasonable" pretty clearly...

"Whenever Marvel has “reasonable” rights for rejection of approval hereunder, the basic criteria to be used by Marvel may include inconsistency with (i) basic story line, (ii) the powers, (iii) basic personality traits, (iv) physical appearance (including clothing or costume), and/or (v) living habitat or environment relating to such character as portrayed in Marvel’s exploitation of such character in comic books or other products for the particular time period being depicted by MCA.

There isn't anything in the contract that would have compelled them to upgrade. Yes, the contract required them to keep the attractions properly maintained, but this change went far beyond maintenance.

There is nothing vague or subjective about it. As long as Universal uses the characters appropriately, Disney/Marvel can't just reject a new Marvel attraction at Universal. If they did, the matter would go to arbitration, and Disney/Marvel would lose.

Why is Universal building Skull Island? And not an Avengers Tower? Nothing on the horizon or rumor mill about it. Why? Because they can't.
